Agatha All Along creator Jac Schaeffer has a reason as to why Joe Locke’s character hasn’t yet been revealed.
The first two episodes of Agatha All Along were released on Disney+ last week. New episodes of the Marvel Studios series will continue to drop on a weekly basis, with the final two episodes then releasing on October 30, 2024.
Locke, who is best known for starring in Netflix’s Heartstopper series, is playing a character who, at this time, is simply referred to as Teen in the series. Many have theorized that Locke is actually playing the MCU‘s Wiccan in Agatha All Along, though his true identity has not yet been revealed.
What did Jac Schaeffer say about Joe Locke’s Agatha All Along character?
Speaking about the character with Variety, Schaeffer said that they’re keeping Teen’s true identity a secret in the Marvel show at this time because of “the effect that his mystery has on Agatha.”
“I don’t like hiding things from the audience, just to then be, like, ‘Boo!’” Schaeffer said. “There’s no artistry to that. So when we talked about obscuring who he is, the first question is, why? What is the utility of that? The answer is, it’s about the effect that his mystery has on Agatha. What does that do to her? How does it motivate her? How does it hit her emotionally?”
Schaeffer added, “My preoccupation is maximum viewer enjoyment, so I get nervous when people get ahead of it. I have to trust that humans are capable of deciding what kind of experience they want. But I comfort myself with the knowledge that it’s a circuitous path, and I hope that that path is enjoyable.
“…It makes me a little heartsick when I catch the reactions of people who were ultimately disappointed by things. It gets to me a little bit. But in approaching Agatha, it was not front of mind. I really can’t control that. That’s a level of fandom that is beyond my reach.”
