The latest trailer for Marvel Studios‘ Deadpool & Wolverine features a joke at the expense of Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld, one that he said he approved.
The new trailer features a scene of Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) walking down an empty and destroyed city. In the background, one of the stores reads “Liefeld’s Just Feet,” something fans quickly spotted. The artist was quick to take to Twitter to confirm not only had he seen the joke, but had actually approved it almost a year ago.
The joke is in reference to a long-running joke about Liefeld not knowing how to draw feet in his comics. In fact, a large majority of Liefeld’s work features no feet whatsoever, with heroes’ legs often covered or draw in a way to hide them. This isn’t the first time that the Deadpool films have made a joke about Liefeld’s issues with feet either.
In Deadpool 2, when Domino (played by Zazzie Beetz) shows off her mutant abilities, Deadpool jokes that having luck isn’t a real superpower and was probably created by “some crackpot” that “can’t draw feet.” At the time, Liefeld also said he had heard of the joke before the film used it and told Reynolds he loved it when the actor called to ask him about it.
“Ryan calls me and says, ‘Rob, we have this joke, I wanna run it by you. Please share me your thoughts,’” Liefeld said in a 2018 interview. “I said ‘Ryan, I absolutely love it.’”
What is Deadpool & Wolverine about?
Deadpool & Wolverine reunites lead star Ryan Reynolds with Free Guy and The Adam Project filmmaker Shawn Levy, who has signed on to helm the long-awaited project. Joining Reynolds are Hugh Jackman and Jennifer Garner, who are finally coming out of their superhero retirement to reprise their respective iconic Marvel roles as Wolverine and Elektra.
It will also feature the return of Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Rob Delaney as Peter, Stefan Kapicic as Colossus, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, and Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio. The movie will also welcome the addition of Marvel newcomers Emma Corrin and Matthew Macfadyen.
The film is written by Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells from a previous draft by the Molyneux sisters (Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin). It is produced by Reynolds, Levy, and Kevin Feige.
