Dynamite Entertainment has enjoyed tremendous success with their partnership with Disney. The publisher has adapted a number of beloved animated series and films into comics, including Gargoyles and Darkwing Duck. Now, Dynamite is ready to tackle one of the most legendary heroes of all time with Disney’s Hercules.
The new comic builds on the story of the original 1997 feature film. Hercules is trying to live his best life as a mortal, having given up divinity to be a hero. While this decision perplexes the gods of Olympus, they are supportive of his choice — particularly since it makes Hercules the perfect agent for when things on Earth need fixing.
Hercules is called into action after Aphrodite’s efforts to bring love to an artist go awry. The artist fell in love with a statue that he modeled on his ideal woman and wished were alive. Unfortunately, while Aphrodite brought the sculpture to life, the new woman was made of marble rather than flesh and bone. This leaves the kind-hearted Herc trying to sort things out. Things get even more complicated when he reports back to Aphrodite, only to find her temple abandoned. Thus begins a sinister saga with heroic hijinks ensuing.
Disney’s Hercules Creative Team
Disney’s Hercules boasts a legendary creative team worthy of the legacies of both Disney and Greek Mythology. The series is written by Emmy Award winning writer Elliott Kalan, best known for his work on The Daily Show and Mystery Science Theater 3000. The interior artwork is provided by Greek comic artist George Kambadais, who previously worked on Dynamite’s Gargoyles. The series will also feature covers by Kambadais, Matteo Lolli, Franceso Tomaselli, and Alessandro Ranaldi.
“To me, the Disney Hercules embodies the best aspects of classic superheroes,” stated Kalan. “Hercules is the original superhero concept — a super-strong person who keeps people safe by removing monsters from the world. What are the Twelve Labors but the original twelve-issue storyline?!?” Kambadais echoed the idea that Hercules is the perfect subject for a comic book, describing him as “a super important character in pop culture, even more so here in Greece.”
Disney’s Hercules #1 is scheduled for release on April 10, 2024.
