After production delays due to the SAG-AFTRA/WGA strikes, cameras on Disney‘s Tron: Ares have started to roll with X-Files veteran Gillian Anderson added to the star-studded cast.
Director Joachim Rønning confirmed the start of principal photography on the Tron sequel with a snapshot of the director’s chair featuring the title logo in neon red lighting.
Meanwhile, Deadline reports that Anderson will be a part of the new Tron story alongside franchise newcomers Jared Leto, Jodie Turner-Smith, Evan Peters, Cameron Monaghan, and Sarah Desjardins. Details regarding Anderson’s role remain under wraps.
The history of Tron
Starring Jeff Bridges and directed by Steven Lisberger, 1982’s Tron was inspired by the video game craze of the ’80s. Bridges played software engineer Kevin Flynn who gets transported into a dark three-dimensional computer world that he must escape. Though the movie did modest business at the box office, Tron was widely praised for its early use of CGI and groundbreaking rotoscoping effects.
Bridges returned for the Joseph Kosinski-directed sequel Tron: Legacy in 2010 alongside Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde. It was met with mixed reviews while earning $400 million worldwide. Kosinski had planned to helm the Tron threequel until he moved on to Top Gun: Maverick. Leto was announced as the franchise’s new star in 2017. Few plot details have been revealed except for Leto playing the title role of Ares, a video game character who finds his way into the real world.
Joachim Rønning (Maleficent) directs Tron: Ares from a script by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne. Leto serves as producer alongside Emma Ludbrook and Jeffrey Springer. Russell Allen serves as executive producer.
Tron: Ares does not have a release date.
