Echo: Alaqua Cox Details Her Exhausting Stunt Training

Marvel’s Echo star Alaqua Cox goes in-depth about the extensive stuntwork she had to perform in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe series on Disney+.

“Yeah, I wish I could say I did all the stunt work,” Cox said in an interview with ComicBook.com. “But seriously, I did do a lot of stunt training for in pre-production and that helped as well. Having a stunt double as well. She was great. But, they didn’t want me… The stunt coordinator didn’t want me to do all of the stunts. And I totally understand because we don’t want any injuries happening and holding up production. That would be tragic.”

She added, “But, having this stunt team was so fun to work with and I was able to learn the new choreography and the fights, new stuff every single day. And I wasn’t used to it, of course, but it looked great in the film. And then, you know, some days we learned choreography on the day of. But, it was so fun and challenging. Overall, it was a fun, tiring, experience doing stunt work.”

Cox reprises her role as Maya Lopez/Echo in the MCU series following her debut as the leader of the Tracksuit Mafia on Disney+’s Hawkeye in 2021. The deaf-born actor was cast on the whim of a casting call and landed the part despite no prior acting experience. After making a significant impact with critics and MCU fans on Hawkeye, Marvel Studios announced that Cox’s Echo was to be spun off into her stand-alone series.

What is Echo about?

“Streaming exclusively on Disney, the origin story of Echo revisits Maya Lopez, whose ruthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her hometown,” the official synopsis reads. “She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots, and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward.”

Echo stars Cox alongside Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin and Charlie Cox making a special appearance as Matt Murdock/Daredevil. Additional cast members include Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Devery Jacobs, Zahn McClarnon, Cody Lightning, and Graham Greene. It is the first MCU series under the new Marvel Spotlight banner and the first to be a TV-MA Disney+ exclusive.

Echo releases in its entirety on January 9, 2024, on Hulu and Disney+.
