Wyatt Russell teased what Marvel fans can expect in Thunderbolts in a conversation with Josh Horowitz on Wednesday night.
While speaking at 92NY to promote the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Russell briefly talked about Thunderbolts and how it will be a different kind of Marvel movie, which should be a positive in the crowded superhero landscape.
“The story that I think they’ve come up with is really interesting — I know parts of the story and how the story works, I can’t talk about it. But it’s not a straightforward Marvel movie as you’ve seen in the past,” Russell said (via The Hollywood Reporter). “I think that it’s gonna be a lot of fun but I think it will be something that hopefully Marvel fans will look at and go, ‘Oh OK, this is a little different, let’s go hard at it.’ And as far as how we are approaching it, it’s time to go to work a little bit, it’s time to make a good Marvel movie, so let’s do that and work hard at it and don’t take things for granted.”
Russell made his MCU debut as John Walker/Captain America/U.S. Agent in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Russell will reprise this role for Thunderbolts, which has not started shooting due to strike-related delays. Even though Russell has not read a finished script, he has “confidence it’s gonna be good” because of the talent and creative team involved.
Who is Involved in Thunderbolts?
Thunderbolts is Marvel’s antihero team-up movie, similar to DC’s Suicide Squad. Besides Russell, Thunderbolts will star Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
Harrison Ford will appear as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross following 2025’s Captain America: Brave New World. Invincible co-creator Robert Kirkman revealed Steven Yeun will play Sentry. Additionally, Ayo Edebiri has been cast in an undisclosed role.
Thunderbolts is directed by Jake Schreier and written by Eric Pearson. However, Lee Sung Jin replaced Pearson as the new screenwriter in March 2023. Scheduled for a Phase Five release in 2024, Thunderbolts was delayed to July 25, 2025, as a part of Phase Six.
