More than a year after she embraced her Scarlet Witch persona in WandaVision, MCU fans will finally catch up with Wanda Maximoff when she returns next week in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The end of that series memorably left Elizabeth Olsen’s character in uncharted psychological territory. Now, the studio has released a new featurette to examine what this means for Wanda’s return.
In the video, Kevin Feige reminds us that several of the film’s characters will meet other versions of themselves as they travel through the multiverse. But it sounds like this experience is going to be very hard on Wanda. The events of WandaVision also revealed that Wanda’s grief can manifest itself in dangerous ways. So when one of these new realities brings her face-to-face with her “sons,” Tommy and Billy, it brings all of her pain and torment back to the surface; which could spell doom for Strange and his allies.

Olsen also discussed how fun it was to approach Wanda’s personality from a different angle. And according to director Sam Raimi, being able to hold a mirror up to herself is key to her development as a character, even if it leads her down a much darker path.
“In the multiverse, there are alternate versions of everyone,” said Raimi. “It gives the characters a unique opportunity to meet themselves, to recognize qualities that they may have been blind to.”
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit theaters on May 6.
