HBO’s The Last of Us TV Series Casts Anna Torv as Tess

Yet another pivotal character from The Last of Us will make an appearance in HBO’s highly-anticipated TV adaptation. According to The Wrap, Anna Torv will play Tess in the upcoming series.

Tess was introduced in the original video game as Joel’s smuggling partner in Boston. She also played an important role at the beginning of Joel and Ellie’s cross-country journey to locate the other members of the Fireflies. Annie Wersching provided Tess’ voice and motion capture in the game. However, it sounds like the TV show is expanding her backstory, because Torv will apparently be a recurring guest star. The live-action version of Tess is also described as “a smuggler and hardened survivor in a post-pandemic world.”

Torv is best known for her five-year stint playing Olivia Dunham on Fringe. In the years since the series ended, she has booked starring roles on other acclaimed shows like Secret City and Mindhunter, both of which ran on Netflix.

The Last of Us began production earlier this month. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are headlining the show as Joel and Ellie, respectively. The cast also includes Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Nico Parker as Sarah, and Merle Dandridge reprising her role from the games as Firefly leader Marlene.

Craig Mazin is writing the series alongside Naughty Dog president Neil Druckmann, and it looks like HBO has a lot of faith in their scripts. HBO is reportedly spending more than $10 million per episode, which will make it one of the most expensive TV shows ever made.

HBO still hasn’t announced a premiere date for The Last of Us.
