Nathalie Emmanuel and Garrett Hedlund Will Headline The Bride

Add Screen Gems to the list of Hollywood studios trying to put a new spin on the Dracula mythos. According to Deadline, Jessica M. Thompson is directing The Bride, a modern take on Bram Stoker’s classic novel starring Nathalie Emmanuel and Garrett Hedlund.

The film is described as a “contemporary horror thriller” and it “tells the story of a young woman who is courted and swept off her feet, only to realize a gothic conspiracy is afoot.” Presumably, Hedlund is the vampire in this scenario (although it’s not clear if he’ll actually be referred to as “Dracula” in the movie), and Emmanuel is playing his unsuspecting lover. While some might think the Dracula brand is played out, Screen Gems execs are already looking ahead, with an eye to produce future installments as well. But for now, they’re fast-tracking Thompson’s movie to start filming by the end of summer.

The Bride’s script comes from former G4 personality Blair Butler, who recently worked as a writer on Marvel’s Helstrom. Thompson is also making her own revisions to the story. Additionally, Emile Gladstone is onboard the the film as a producer.

Emmanuel is remembered for playing Missandei on Game of Thrones. Next up, she’ll appear in F9 and Army of Thieves, the prequel to Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead. Hedlund most recently showed up in The United States vs. Billie Holiday. He also headlined Tron: Legacy a decade ago.

The Bride is far from the only Dracula-adjacent project in the works. Back in February, Universal enlisted Eternals helmer Chloe Zhao to direct a film that re-imagines Stoker’s tale as a futuristic, sci-fi Western. The studio is also plotting a Renfield spinoff centering on the vampire’s human familiar and directed by Chris McKay.

Screen Gems still hasn’t set a release date for The Bride.
