Dominique Thorne Says Marvel Didn’t Audition Her To Play Ironheart

In contrast to the MCU’s early beginnings, the future of Marvel’s live-action slate looks like it belongs to young superheroines like Kate Bishop, Ms. Marvel, and Ironheart. Most of these heroes aren’t particularly well-known outside of comic circles. Regardless, their inclusion in the MCU will likely increase their popularity and raise the profile for their respective actresses. This is especially true for Dominique Thorne, who will join the MCU as Riri Williams/Ironheart in her own Disney+ series.

Thorne only has two screen credits to her name, which makes Ironheart a big turning point in her acting career. But surprisingly, her performances in If Beale Street Could Talk and Judas and the Black Messiah were enough to convince Marvel to offer her the part up front.

“I was at home in Delaware and I got a call asking if I would like to play this role,” Thorne recently told Empire. “It was the best phone call I could have ever received. I was so shocked, in fact, that there was a considerable lag in the conversation! I was waiting for them to say, like, ‘Oh, we’ll send you the sides’, or, ‘Get your tape over to us.’ But there was none of that. It was just like, ‘Would you like to do this?’ It was probably the most unique experience I’ve ever had because there was no audition at all.”

Kevin Feige announced the Ironheart series during Disney’s Investor Day presentation back in December. He also confirmed that Riri will eventually cross over to Marvel’s big-screen projects as well. Feige neglected to share whether the show currently has a writer or any directors lined up. However, the search for behind-the-scenes talent is probably underway as we speak.
