It’s official: DMZ is coming to HBO Max. According to Variety, the streaming service has given a full series order to the adaptation of Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli’s Vertigo comic book series.
The four-part limited series takes place in the near future and imagines an America ravaged by a second civil war. Rosario Dawson is headlining the show as Alma Ortega. Alma works as a nurse in New York City, which has become a demilitarized zone amid the ongoing conflict. Still, the island of Manhattan has its own set of problems, including a few gangs vying for power. The series follows Alma’s search for her son, who was lost when NYC was evacuated at the war’s outset.
HBO Max ordered a DMZ pilot last year, with Ava DuVernay directing the episode. DuVernay will also executive produce the series alongside showrunner Roberto Patino, who’s writing all four episodes. Dawson joined the project back in February. Since then, the cast has expanded to include Benjamin Bratt, Hoon Lee, Freddy Miyares, and Jordan Preston Carter. Bratt will also play a major role on the show as Parco Delgado, a popular Manhattan gang leader.

With the powerhouse visionary team of Ava and Roberto at the helm, bringing this critically acclaimed DC gem to life promises to entertain and inspire hope.”
DMZ will begin production in 2021.
