Ruby Rose is Leaving Batwoman Ahead of Season 2

Back in October, Batwoman officially joined The CW’s Arrowverse as an ongoing series. But now, the show has hit a major hurdle before production can start on season 2. Variety is reporting that Ruby Rose has chosen to step down from her role as Kate Kane/Batwoman and exit the series.

This news comes two days after Batwoman concluded its first season, which was cut short by two episodes. The CW was aiming for the second season to premiere in January 2021, with a Superman and Lois crossover event airing a few months later. Despite this development, The CW still intends to keep Batwoman on the air. However, this means that a new actress will be donning Kate’s cape and cowl.

“I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season,” said Rose in a statement. “This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show…I am beyond appreciative to Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Caroline Dries for not only giving me this incredible opportunity, but for welcoming me into the DC universe they have so beautifully created. Thank you Peter Roth and Mark Pedowitz and the teams at Warner Bros. and The CW who put so much into the show and always believed in me. Thank you to everyone who made season one a success – I am truly grateful.”

Rose made her Arrowverse debut as Kate Kate/Batwoman during The CW’s Elseworlds crossover in late 2018. Batwoman’s appearance ultimately paved the way for her own series, which became The CW’s second most-watched and highest-rated TV show among adults 18-49 behind The Flash. The series has also done well in the DVR and streaming markets.

Warner Bros. TV, The CW, and Berlanti Productions also shared their own joint statement on Rose’s departure:

“Warner Bros. Television, The CW and Berlanti Productions thank Ruby for her contributions to the success of our first season and wish her all the best. The studio and network are firmly committed to Batwoman’s second season and long-term future. And we — along with the show’s talented creative team — look forward to sharing its new direction, including the casting of a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months.”
