James Gunn Rules Out Yondu’s Resurrection in Guardians 3

Although the Peter Quill and his teammates vanquished Ego the Living Planet in their last standalone big-screen outing, it came at a price. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 memorably ended with Yondu sacrificing himself to save Quill, and the heroes bid him farewell with a Ravagers’ funeral. Michael Rooker’s performance as the blue-skinned, gravel-voiced space pirate easily made him a fan favorite. But that doesn’t mean he will get a resurrection in the series’ third installment.

James Gunn recently returned to Instagram (via ComicBook.com) to answer more fan questions about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. At one point, he was asked if he plans to bring Yondu back to life in the next movie. Gunn insisted that this won’t be the case, but the way he phrased his answer only raises additional questions.

“Not to life no,” said Gunn. “If a character dies in my films they will likely stay dead. I think stakes are important.”

Yondu may not come back “to life” in Guardians 3, but this doesn’t necessarily mean he isn’t returning at all. Perhaps Gunn is teasing that Rooker will reprise his role in a flashback scene or in a vision.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is still without a release date. However, it will most likely be part of Marvel’s Phase 5 slate.
