Hollywood has broadened the superhero genre’s horizons by making movies that skew towards a more mature audience. Now, Birds of Prey is the latest comic book adaptation to jump on this bandwagon. Via FilmRatings.com, Birds of Prey has officially been given an R-rating “for strong violence and language throughout, and some sexual and drug material.”
This revelation isn’t a surprise. After all, the filmmakers behind Birds of Prey have been insisting that the movie would be rated R for over a year. Before they even finished the casting process, director Cathy Yan teased that Christina Hodson’s screenplay had plenty of “dark humor” to set it apart from other comic book films. With Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn at the forefront, it sounds like the film will definitely live up to that promise. And if she’s anything like her animated counterpart on DC Universe, moviegoers are in for a bloody good time.

Birds of Prey won’t be the first R-rated DC movie. That distinction belongs to Joker, which arrived in October and also became the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. But Joker was a standalone feature that took place in its own universe. Birds of Prey will instead be the first R-rated film to share continuity with the DCEU. It probably won’t be the last. James Gunn is also reportedly aiming for an R-rating for The Suicide Squad, which recently started filming.
Birds of Prey will hit theaters on February 7, 2020.
