Ahead of the trailer’s debut early next week, Jason Reitman has provided new story details for Ghostbusters: Afterlife. While speaking with Vanity Fair, Reitman offered fans a better idea of what to expect from the sequel. Reitman notes that the movie “is a new adventure that connects back to the Manhattan Crossrip of 1984.” Essentially, that was the rise of Gozer and his alter ego, the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man.
Carrie Coon (The Leftovers) portrays Callie, a single mother to and her two kids: Phoebe, as played by McKenna Grace (I, Tonya), and Trevor, who will be portrayed by Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things).
“As the family arrives at an old farm, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters,” noted Reitman. “Trevor and Phoebe are about to find out who their grandfather was and whether they’re ready to pick up the proton pack themselves.”
Trevor and Phoebe also find ECTO-1 in their family’s barn. This was first teased with the trailer that came out earlier this year.
That’s not all, as Phoebe apparently comes across a familiar device — the spectral-reading PKE meter.

Reitman didn’t say who the family was related to. However, he did say that “people may already notice some familiarity in their appearance.” And if we had to hazard a guess, we’d say it was Egon.
“The joy of cowriting a film like this is imagining the sound of Ecto-1’s engine revving back to life or the moment a PKE meter lights up for the first time and begins leading you toward your destiny,” continued Reitman; who co-wrote the script alongside Monster House scribe Gil Kenan.
The Vanity Fair article also features some first images. These include the ECTO-1 running through a wheat field, as well as a first look at Paul Rudd’s character, Mr. Grooberson. He’s a teacher who helps the kids out with his knowledge of the Manhattan Crossrip.
On top of that, a new tweet from the Ghostbusters account revealed a new poster ahead of the trailer. It’s viewable below.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is set to hit theaters on July 10, 2020.
