Report: Disney Isn’t Impressed With Fox’s New Mutants

Josh Boone’s The New Mutants just can’t seem to catch a break. The X-Men spinoff first began production back in summer 2017, but it has gone through numerous delays. Fox planned to do reshoots in an effort to give the film a scarier tone, but that still has yet to take place. Now, a new report suggests that Disney has very little confidence in the film.

A story in Variety, notes that Disney is “unimpressed” with The New Mutants and its “haunted-house vibe.” Furthermore, Disney executives reportedly believe that it has “limited box office potential.” That may reignite speculation that Disney will withhold a theatrical release, and dump it on either Hulu or Disney+.

Disney is still reeling from the box office performance of Fox’s last X-Men film, Dark Phoenix; which was released earlier this summer. It only made $65 million in the U.S., and just over $250 million worldwide against a $200 million budget. Director Simon Kinberg, accepted responsibility for its failure. However, the damage has already been done to the X-Men brand.

The New Mutants‘ reshoots are reportedly set to start sometime this year. But some of the cast, including Maisie Williams, are openly frustrated with the film’s lack of progress. For the time being, New Mutants is still slated to arrive in April 2020…unless it gets delayed again.
