There’s much to get excited for with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Electronic Arts’ upcoming single player adventure in the hit sci-fi franchise. It features many lightsaber techniques that players will be able to pull off when it comes to taking out enemies. But does it follow the films’ and include decapitations and dismemberment? In a new interview over at IGN, Respawn’s senior designer Justin Perez suggests that some of those moves exist in the game. But only to a point.
“We’ll use it in select cases,” confirmed Perez. However, cutting off limbs will only be options when facing non-human enemies, like droids and spiders. Disney and Lucasfilm were very specific about putting those rules in place.
Tatyana Drewry Carvin, who serves as a story artist for the forthcoming season of The Clone Wars for Disney+, provided further clarification.
“One of the rules we were given was to always hide the cut in case of decapitation,” explained Carvin. “And never show blood. The burn of the lightsaber is supposed to cauterize it instantly. And about hiding the cut of the decapitation – a good/smart way to do it is to have a camera move and have something in the foreground hide the spot where the head gets cut. Using the motion of the camera and a foreground element – like another character – is more cinematic than using a camera cut.”

Those cuts will undoubtedly help Jedi: Fallen Order land a Teen rating. And as noted above, the Star Wars films are largely bloodless when it comes to lightsaber battles. Even the first film had Obi-Wan cutting off an arm, but in a fairly PG way.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order hits stores on November 15 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. Will you be picking up the game later this year? Let us know in the comments below!
