The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Fox Animation has picked up the rights to the web comic-turned-graphic novel Nimona, which will be directed by Patrick Osborne, who previously helmed the Oscar-winning short Feast. Marc Haimes is set to write the adaptation, which will be produced by Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment.
Written and drawn by Noelle Stevenson, whose other co-creation “Lumberjanes” was also recently picked up by Fox, the series began as a web comic while Stevenson was still a student at Maryland Institute College of Art and was recently published in full as a graphic novel by HarperTeen as well as being nominated for an Eisner Award. The series is officially described as follows:
“Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren’t the heroes everyone thinks they are…But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona’s powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.”
