Coming in at second place domestically was World War Z, which earned $66 million from 3,607 theaters for an average of $18,298. Starring Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, James Badge Dale, Matthew Fox and David Morse, the $190 million zombie action thriller marks Pitt’s biggest opening ever surpassing 2005’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s $50.3 million. Receiving a B+ CinemaScore, World War Z added $45.8 million from 25 markets overseas for a worldwide total of $111.8 million.
Warner Bros. Pictures’ Man of Steel dropped to third place and lost about 64.7% in ticket sales from its first weekend, a larger percentage than was expected. The Superman movie brought in $41.2 million its second weekend and has earned $210 million after two weeks. Overseas, the Zack Snyder-directed film performed much better in first place with another $89 million for an international total of $188.3 million. Worldwide, the $225 million-budgeted Man of Steel has reached $398.3 million.
