Singer Interested in Returning to X-Men

Many X-Men fans were disappointed when director Bryan Singer decided to venture off to Superman Returns instead of directing X-Men: The Last Stand, the third movie in the trilogy he kicked off with X-Men and X2 in 2000 and 2003, respectively.

In a recent interview for the July issue of Total Film (reprinted in the Coventry Telegraph's The Geek Files), Singer mused about returning to the franchise:

"I'm eternally intertwined with X-Men now," he told them. "What takes an audience four hours to watch - the first two movies - took six years of my life. So, to not be part of it....It's a shame."

They also asked Singer whether he wished he had directed the third "X-Men" movie, to which he replied, "It's weird for me to watch it, because I'm so close to the universe. And also Brett is a good friend of mine. But, of course, I would love to return to that universe."

Lastly, they tried to get his thoughts on possibly directing the in-development X-Men Origins: Magneto that had been announced years ago with David (Blade: Trinity) Goyer attached to direct. Singer gave a tentative "possibly" response, because he expects it to cover some of the same WWII Nazi Germany territory he's covered before:

" The only thing that concerns me about Magneto is that if the prequel were to follow the track I used in X-Men, which is Magneto's history in the concentration camp, then I've lived in that world. Apt Pupil, X-Men and now Valkyrie...I've lived in that Nazi universe for quite a while. I just might need to take a little break before I do something like that."

He was even less committal about making another Superman movie:

"I don't know, I don't know. There are still issues...I just...I just don't know. I don't necessarily...I don't know. It's one of those things where...It's so weird talking about stuff unless I'm about to ramp up and shoot it."

Let us know below whether you'd want to see Singer return to either superhero franchise.

hahahaha.....you know what I want Singer to direct it, just so he can mess it up and then there will be no more talk about him doing comic adaptations. PLEASE SINGER DO THIS, so this discussion can be laid to rest.

Posted by: joe on June 1, 2009 at 12:59:37

please don't back. Yours movies are very very boring. Machel bay for xmen or superman movies.

Posted by: ted on June 1, 2009 at 13:14:29

Wolfer...get your facts right ok...

Superman returns budget was meant to be about 200 million. The surplus budget is from the 3 FAILED ATTEMPTS to make the movie from 1995 onwards. Something nothing to do with Singer.

Jeez. SR made a profit, especilaly after DVD.

Singer is the best thing to happen to Xmen, if you dont reckon so, lets erase the fisrt two movies. And if you reckon that they arnt so gret compare them to X3 or Wolverine to see how low the movies can sink.

I like Singer But his idea for X3 sounded boring. I wish he would have continued The Superman series he started. But im not sure what his idea was for that???? Hes a good film maker!!!!

Reboot without Singer. The X-Men franchise should have started out with the original 5 and introduced Storm, Wolverine and Colossus within the trilogy. Now with the Wolverine movie [which is pure garbage] looking at a sequel and a possible spinoff, Fox's version of the X-Men universe is waaay off track to repair at this point. The only solution is to reboot down the road and hope that Marvel will be allowed to have more influence in the product to get it right...ie: Batman Begins.

Singer did a brilliant job with X-men (and a fine job with X2). X3 suffered horribly in his absence. The people that gripe about the X1 box office need to recall that *Singer brought back the superhero genre singlehandedly* - there was no running market for that kind of film before that. And while I agree that Singer's X-men (so far) have seen a little lean on the action, his emphasis WAS on everyday people in everyday situations trying to cope with these sudden new superpowers (a concept now borrowed hundreds of times recently). Singer deserves A LOT of credit. I think he'd be perfect for Magneto or for X-Men First Class. At least we can be sure we won't get the hot mess that was X3 or (nearly as stupid and even less sensical) Wolverine.

Wow. Can't folks give their opinions about disliking Singer and his films with resulting to childish rants? I don't like him much either but sheesh. It makes you come off even worse than the guy your talking about, unless of course thats your aim from the start.

Seriously, folks. Singer isn't even a good director to begin with. All the X movies and Superman Returns are terrible. Valkyrie is terrible. The Usual Suspects is nothing special. He hasn't done anything that good. But who cares, really, if he does another X movie. It's already messed up, so it can't get any worse.

I always find it very interesting that there are so many deficient people that do not understand that the movies are not comics, and there is no reason (at all) for the movie to follow this specific detail or that detail! I mean seriously, there are at least eight major lines of X-men comics (and hundreds of side lines) and they all VASTLY disagree in timeline, characterization, etc. Who should movieverse be any different? Singer's concept was far better than most of the nonsensical crap in the comics these days. (M-day anyone? Can Marvel horrendously rip-off DC any more blatantly and botch it any more badly? Ugh - just plain stupid.)

I think SINGER and RATNER should be booted from the XMEN franchise. I think they should start over, like with Batman. I think the movies could be better if they didnt spend so much money on stars like Famke Jansen, patrick Stewart, Halle Berry and you know Jackman comes with a price tag now. They should make the movies darker, edgier and kickass. The other XMEN movies were so lite and pitiful. You could tell everyone was floating around on cables, it just looked poor. Get someone else.

the only thing sort of decent was Xmen2. The rest were mediocre, SUperman takes the winner on the mediocrecy department.
Favreau has set the standard for marvel movies, and Nolan for DC.
Anything less than what these guys have done, it's simply put, not worth making.

What would be so wrong with choosing the guys that direct the cartoon series like Justice League o Next Avengers... they are very much familiar with the genre, they have nothing to loose but everthing to give and I'm sure they will work with a budget like 150 million. I mean this is not star trek where you create whole worlds from scratch... the world is out there, you just gotta make people have adamantium claws, fly, shoot energy beams, freeze stuff or run fast.

me too, i don't know...xmen and xmen 2 were good movies, and i don't see superman r yet, so... Who i not, for xmen 4. But the title of the third movie was "the last stand"...

Posted by: Michael Bowman on June 1, 2009 at 13:46:52

Oh hell no!!!! All of the X-Men movies were horrible!!! If they decide to make more movies, than it will have to be rebooted.

I'd love to see him back, except that I worry it would be like when Mark Waid came back to The Flash last year--all those expectations, all that promise...and it just fizzled. It wasn't terrible, but the expectations were so high that I lost a little love for Waid's Flash as a result of his not meeting them.

what amazes me the most is the fact that I rather watch SUperman II than Return, that doesnt say much for a filt or director that has had plenty of material to work off of, 21st century technology and mega budgets...

No one can credibly charge Singer with being a bad director. He has proven time and again to be one of the best directors working. Yes, Superman Returns sucked, but if you've seen Usual Suspects, Apt Pupil or either of the first Xmen films and still say he's a bad director, you're only making yourself look ignorant.

Incidentally, if you liked any Marvel movies made since Singer made the first Xmen, you owe him a debt of thanks. It was the first Xmen's success that paved the way for all subsequent Marvel films.

Posted by: The Wolfer on June 1, 2009 at 14:10:56

mojo, just because he paved the way for future movies doesn't make him a good director. He still sucks and if they let him near another movie ... it's still gonna suck.

X-Men 3 went to the wrong path by killing Cyclops and the Professor. Also by taking Rogues power and also killing Jean Grey. if he does does X-Men 4 he needs to make some big changes.

Posted by: commiex on June 1, 2009 at 14:14:03

it's not like he could ruin the x-franchise any worse than he already has. "what happens when a toad is struck by lightning?" i hate myself for repeatedly paying to see those cinematic abortions.

Posted by: Singer Rules! on June 1, 2009 at 14:14:05

@ Midnight Black,
Singer's capacity for story telling and his ability to take something that is considered child-like and taboo for the vast majority of the planet and turn it into the flavor of the decade is something truely remarkable.

singer was the first since donner to turn a comic book character into something epic.

no batman wasnt epic, superman 3,4, supergirl, blade, howard the duck etc etc etc werent epic. they were treated at best as B material (and sorry tim burton destroyed batman. i prefer the adam west MOVIE over that junk)

as we can see from the usual suspect and valkyrie, singer can story-tell. he can direct and he can do action.

we expect action. we want action. we just dont appreciate story telling.

Geeks are so **** about sticking to the "original". singer was smart and asked.... what is original? in the fleisher cartoons, superman's logo was black on red!. in the x-men universe what is original? yellow spandex? the original blue uniform in the comics?

people dont appreciate a good take on something.

superman's uniform kicked ass. the effects and action was fantastic.
the only twist of the movie was the kid. which was a risk he took. what do we do instead of encourage taking chances? linch someone for attempting something unique and challenging.

singer did an amazing job. from this movie we can totaly see that he's a fan and wants to do the movie.

singer could of stayed and made X3 and not touch superman. but he as well as anyone of us would kill to do a superman movie. he did it, and it was still good.

superman did $200M domesticaly and its still considered a failure. this shows how are and rigid superman fans are.

Singer does indeed Rule! the more comic book properties he touches, the more we get to see good story telling.

here is an example of great visuals but boring as sin movie.... WATCHMEN!!!!!

being concentrated too much of visual etc that the story was so lacking and boring. i've never seen a movie with 85% back-story and 5% action and 10% credits!!!

if singer would of done that one i guarantee you, the movie would of been way more exciting and heartfelt.

Posted by: Ab Paris on June 1, 2009 at 14:26:21

X-Men went down the wrong path n by killing Cyclops and the Professor Also by killing Jean Grey. So don't think he can fix it any more unless he makes the whole X-Men 3 a bad vision from the Professor. even then i don't know Singer kinda sucks just look at superman it was ok not great like it should of been

Posted by: EyeBall on June 1, 2009 at 14:45:08

Valkyrie is one of the worst movies ever made. Singer didn't do just to a great story.

Posted by: xfan on June 1, 2009 at 14:48:09

I NEED AN XMEN FOUR!

if bryan singer will take his time and work carefully he can return xmen to its former glory. AND MAKE MORE XMEN MOVIES
