Singer Interested in Returning to X-Men
June 1, 2009
Many X-Men fans were disappointed when director Bryan Singer decided to venture off to Superman Returns instead of directing X-Men: The Last Stand, the third movie in the trilogy he kicked off with X-Men and X2 in 2000 and 2003, respectively.
In a recent interview for the July issue of Total Film (reprinted in the Coventry Telegraph's The Geek Files), Singer mused about returning to the franchise:
"I'm eternally intertwined with X-Men now," he told them. "What takes an audience four hours to watch - the first two movies - took six years of my life. So, to not be part of it....It's a shame."
They also asked Singer whether he wished he had directed the third "X-Men" movie, to which he replied, "It's weird for me to watch it, because I'm so close to the universe. And also Brett is a good friend of mine. But, of course, I would love to return to that universe."
Lastly, they tried to get his thoughts on possibly directing the in-development X-Men Origins: Magneto that had been announced years ago with David (Blade: Trinity) Goyer attached to direct. Singer gave a tentative "possibly" response, because he expects it to cover some of the same WWII Nazi Germany territory he's covered before:
" The only thing that concerns me about Magneto is that if the prequel were to follow the track I used in X-Men, which is Magneto's history in the concentration camp, then I've lived in that world. Apt Pupil, X-Men and now Valkyrie...I've lived in that Nazi universe for quite a while. I just might need to take a little break before I do something like that."
He was even less committal about making another Superman movie:
"I don't know, I don't know. There are still issues...I just...I just don't know. I don't necessarily...I don't know. It's one of those things where...It's so weird talking about stuff unless I'm about to ramp up and shoot it."
Let us know below whether you'd want to see Singer return to either superhero franchise.

I hope he does them both! X-Men was way better with Brian and I throughly enjoyed his take on Superman, even with the lack of action. I say give him another chance with both franchises!

I hope he does do another X-man whatever. That way he'll be the hell away from Superman, far far away.

- That´s a joke... Let the comic book caracters alone Bryan... Read comics first, become a fun of the caracters like, Gillermo del Toro, Brett Ratner, or you can learn from Christopher Nolan... You don´t deserve them.

Stay true to the comics and give them their original comic costume. That is what we are most concerned about. X1-X3 did not really do that neither did SR changed costume. Spider-man and Dark Knight had the costume right. You have to come up with a plausible reason to have costumes. Other movies have done it. X-men may need a reboot i.e. what Star Trek did with alternate timeline would fix it.
I agree with Yawn_Fiesta "wimpy Iceman, a near-useless Rogue, a Nightcrawler who was only a true bad-ass while he was under mind control (and then became a wuss for the rest of the film), a sorely underused Cyclops, a miserably miscast Storm, and the most half-assed "Brotherhood of Evil Mutants" I've ever seen. Really, no Destiny? No Avalanche? No Mystique in her classic white dress? "

I just wish Fox would let go of this franchise. But as long as they make one dime off of it I know that will never happen.

Its relly exciting to read that Synger is interested in more X-men films.
Fox should know this and hire him for X-men 4, that movie needs to be done, the x-men fans would love it, and more with the original director.
X4 with Byan Singer would be AMAZING!!!

First off, Yeah I don't like Singer to have anything to do with either of these franchises, but I'm not screaming profanities and telling him to die. He is good, and wouldn't be where he was if he wasn't, but just now with comic adaptations IMHO!
@ Fanboii
I'm a fan, not a fanboy. I didn't like XMO:Wovie, and I know about the movie making process. "What the atmosphere was like before he did movies..." I can name a bunch of adaptations that came out before or Xmen that were better than it. Batman 89 for example.
@Arc
No he needs to stay away.
@Singer Rules!
No he is not. He isn't even close to the best thing that could've happened. I'm not saying he is the worst either, but they could've been much better.
@majorbloodnok
I'm just giving my opinion, the same as others are saying why he is good. I don't agree with the profanity that others are using, but he is not good for these types of movies, at least from what I have seen.
@fanboii
"Midnight Black, you're wrong and that's the problem. People are separating the two when he's suppose to be both. He's suppose to be the hero who's the most powerful and most virtuous in a world that's constantly against him."
I'm not! I agree with what you are saying he is suppose to be both, but at the same time Superman is a great protagonist with great power that has not really been shown fully in his movies. They keep playing the "boy scout" role. In the comics/cartoons he even got down to business, kicked butt, got mad, sweated under pressure. Show this. Batman did this other films did this. Superman has many layers.
Superman Returns was redundant and boring and did nothing really to venture outside of the typical Superman film/character.
I want to see a bloody Superman. I want to see Superman pushed to the point where he says "d*mn". I want to see him go through psychological and physical conflict/stress.
"The Superman franchise has always been under the vision of Richard Donner. That's the real problem. It needs to find it's modern equivalent to Batman Begins and I think WB knows it now."
Agreed, but I'm sorry there are two different kinds of Superman fans. There just are. Either people want to seem him saving kittens, or they want him to do some butt kicking. Yes, you can have mixture of the two, but filmmakers/producres/writers seem scared to favor the aggressive Superman like that in the 80/90s/2000s versions. I'm TIRED OF 50s freaking Superman being portrayed on film.
Superman films will never be good if they don't go this route. We've seen the goody two shoes Superman. Superman 2 and 4 touched on this.
I swear if they do a Superman film of World peace where he talks everything out. That will kill it. People keep saying they want a good movie, but then when some people suggest a grittier Superman they get upset and say, "No, he has to be Virtuous an Jesus-like. He must not curse or show anger. He must fly around and just save people from burning buildings." That is crap and a boring story.
If you want a good Superman film. Show us something never seen before. Take a page out of TDK/Iron Man/ or something and give us some action, some freaking emotional drama.

YES...Singer is the best for X´men films...
X2 is AMAZING!

he should go back to x-men, i love his work, but i think he made a mess of superman, he had his chance, his vision did not work, get some new blood on man of steel !!!
Posted by: Midnight Black on June 1, 2009 at 12:11:28
Did anyone like X3 better than X2 or X1?? I mean for what Bret could do with X3 given the direction of X1&2 and minus him killing Cyclops and others. Did anyone prefer it as a whole not the sum of the parts better than the previous films?

Have him come back to the x-men flicks. He should have never left, so have him redo x3 and wolverine! Yay!

X-1 and 2 were ok, but nothing special for me. I didnt care for Singer's Superman AT all. It had its bright spots tho, like the plane/shuttle rescue, the yacht lifting, and the listening post, but overall i'd still give it a 6 or 7 out of 10.
There was no excuse to not have a proper shirt rip after a 20 year wait, no excuse at all. that should have been in it no matter if they would have had to do reshoot after reshoot.
And dont even get me started on the lack of a supervillain...ugh.

I agree with many of you....
1. Singer's X1 and X2 were good. X3 had moments of goodness, but let you down a little.
2. Singer needs to let Supperman alone! I can understand why he wanted to direct Superman.....I mean Supes is the grandaddy to almost every other hero.
3. Singer should direct and X4 and NOT a prequil or a spinoff.
strength & honor lads

Damn it, Singer! Get the next Superman film going!!!!! :(

brett ratner is a way better candidate then bryan singa..buahahahahaahahahha..wow i can't even type that without busting up in laughter

No Singer for Superman or X-men. X-men 1 and 2 were decent, but the characterization was dreadful and he discouraged his cast from even studying their characters in the comics. Bad form. We all know Superman Returns was just rehash but with none of the majesty or awe from the Reeves flicks 1 ans 2.

I loved Superman Returns, so I'd prefer Singer to do a Superman sequel. I just REALLY want more Superman movies with Routh as Superman. He rocks! Please, WB, bring him back!
I also liked his X-Men movies and would love to see more X movies done by him, BUT my priority is Superman.

I Love Brian Singer's work with the X-Men. He was the first director in a LONG time to actually bring justice to comic book movies (especially x-men 2). But there's some thing about his story telling that works in movies like Usual Suspects, but doesn't in things like the X-Men. The stories are drawn out a little too long in some parts and there was NO team work in EITHER of his movies. The combat sceens in X-Men 3 were phenomenal and there was TONS of teamwork to boot, which makes sense because the X-Men are a TEAM of mutants who train TOGEATHER to benefit mankind. I think he either needs to change his formula, or we need a new director who can merge the best parts of Singer's directing with the best parts of X-men 3. GL

@sybmiote
I Agree! Completely how I feel....well mostly.
Singer can't direct a comic book movie IMO, though.
They need an action director for movies like this. I'm sorry, but I want a blockbuster, GOOD Storytelling movie. That's what a comic book movie should be. Not some drawn out emotional piece.
Does anyone have a good idea for a new Superman movie?? I have one.
Posted by: spooie on June 1, 2009 at 12:44:15
Can he come back for Xmen 4 and we realize that the third movie was all a dream that Shadow King was projecting on everyone or something?
Posted by: Vance Astro on June 1, 2009 at 12:48:10
That sounds like a great idea to bring Singer back into the X-Men. I'd like to see him tackle X-Men 4, but Laura Schuler Donner mentioned she'd like to see him do Gambit or Deadpool.
He'd also make a hell of a director for the Magneto film.
Posted by: Midnight Black on June 1, 2009 at 12:48:25
X3 was not that bad although they beat the Wolvie theme to death, good action and story though. It was better than X1 and X2 as a whole. X2 had one good part really. The rest was drawn out and the characters were weak. X1 was so slow and boring.
Let's get the directors from Underworld, Blade, Iron Man etc.
Posted by: Midnight Black on June 1, 2009 at 12:49:16
Peter Jackson for X4 or Magneto's film.
Posted by: Vance Astro on June 1, 2009 at 12:51:00
I liked X3. Few films do such a great job leaving plotlines for their sequels to pick up... People were so furious to see ti end without Prof being resurrected or Cyclops being found.
and-- oooo Jean Grey died--- big deal. That's what a phoenix does.
