Singer Interested in Returning to X-Men
June 1, 2009
Many X-Men fans were disappointed when director Bryan Singer decided to venture off to Superman Returns instead of directing X-Men: The Last Stand, the third movie in the trilogy he kicked off with X-Men and X2 in 2000 and 2003, respectively.
In a recent interview for the July issue of Total Film (reprinted in the Coventry Telegraph's The Geek Files), Singer mused about returning to the franchise:
"I'm eternally intertwined with X-Men now," he told them. "What takes an audience four hours to watch - the first two movies - took six years of my life. So, to not be part of it....It's a shame."
They also asked Singer whether he wished he had directed the third "X-Men" movie, to which he replied, "It's weird for me to watch it, because I'm so close to the universe. And also Brett is a good friend of mine. But, of course, I would love to return to that universe."
Lastly, they tried to get his thoughts on possibly directing the in-development X-Men Origins: Magneto that had been announced years ago with David (Blade: Trinity) Goyer attached to direct. Singer gave a tentative "possibly" response, because he expects it to cover some of the same WWII Nazi Germany territory he's covered before:
" The only thing that concerns me about Magneto is that if the prequel were to follow the track I used in X-Men, which is Magneto's history in the concentration camp, then I've lived in that world. Apt Pupil, X-Men and now Valkyrie...I've lived in that Nazi universe for quite a while. I just might need to take a little break before I do something like that."
He was even less committal about making another Superman movie:
"I don't know, I don't know. There are still issues...I just...I just don't know. I don't necessarily...I don't know. It's one of those things where...It's so weird talking about stuff unless I'm about to ramp up and shoot it."
Let us know below whether you'd want to see Singer return to either superhero franchise.

"Uh, no, Bryan. No X-Men for you. In fact, you've been barred from making any superhero films ever again. While X-Men was decent, we need someone with a much grander vision to do the franchise some justice. We can do without a wimpy Iceman, a near-useless Rogue, a Nightcrawler who was only a true bad-ass while he was under mind control (and then became a wuss for the rest of the film), a sorely underused Cyclops, a miserably miscast Storm, and the most half-assed "Brotherhood of Evil Mutants" I've ever seen. Really, no Destiny? No Avalanche? No Mystique in her classic white dress? No, Bryan. No more X-Men for you. Stick to your little indie films from now on, you're good at those."
that is the best post on this thread!! x-men could have been a 300 Million plus like spidey and iron man but it never came close. sorry boring singer, ur done!!

By returning to Xmen, he'd not only be saving the franchise from the X3/Wolverine debacle, but he'd also be saving the Superman franchise by abandoning it. He may be the Richard Donner of Xmen, but he's also the Joel Schumacher of Superman.

NOOOOOO!! I don't think he did a great job with X-Men to begin with. He blew Wolverine's character out of proportion, he made Cyclops and Storm look second rated. The only think he made right was Magneto. X-Men is supposed to be a movie about the whole team, and what each character brings to it. I think they need a new director for X-Men. Someone who really knows what X-Men is all about and can really do it just.

@ Mako Sharq Esq
I agree with you about the whole aesthetics concerning Superman and the mixture of CGI and camera work special effects. GOOD Stuff!
However, the story is what people go to see and is what people remember! If the story sucks or "falls short" (to be quite fair) than everything else is pointless.
Yes, I like the colors and homage to "frumpy-NY" 1950s Superman/Lois Lane. But I personally would've rather like to see a continuation of the 80s New Superman that I grew up with. However, I enjoy a directors freedom for change. SO I can definitely let that go and appreciate something different.
But the film was bad. Singer is not a blockbuster/superhero/adventure director. Almost any director can show us drama and conflict, that comes with good storytelling, but Singer seems to have a problem combining those elements, while making an action packed block buster.
IMHO he waters down movies. Superman was watered down, and X-Men was watered down for the general Audience. They were too slow and not engaging. They could've been so much more. Epic in my opinion. Large scale with good storytelling like LOTR or like Underworld as far as action and good story IMHO.
I like the changes made to Superman's look. I agree with you. But would it kill the studios to make a gritty Superman Movie. I don't mean like Sin City or the Spirit, but a movie where Superman gets down to business.

Fox give X-Men back to Marvel Studios!
Sony give Spider-Man back to Marvel Studios!
Reboot em all and do it like Iron Man and The Hulk.. That would be awesome!!

X-Men can have him. He can do more with mutants than with the Man of Steel.

There are two types of Superman fans in my opinion:
1) The fans that like to see Superman as a "Boy Scout" throughout the movie/comic or whatever and that is the first thing or rather the most important thing that comes to mind when they think of him.
2)The fans that like to see Superman kick some a**. Save the day, but get his butt handed to him along the way. But inevitably bounce back and show off his powers and be the man of steal.
I'm tired of seeing the same movies made for the 1st type of fans. I want some Superman movies made for us 2nd type of fans.
I like seeing Lex in Superman Returns for another time, portrayed by Spacey. He did a good job, but lay it to rest now. Make Lex a secondary Villain in the next few films. PLEASE!
Ask yourself do you want more Lex Luthor story or do you want some Darkseid/Alien SuperHuman powered beings/More Corrupt despicable Lex Luthor???
I chose the latter.

Why are idiots saying he screwed other X-Men movies? Oh, wait... those are the idiots who liked X3 and Wolverine.
Singer did well with X-Men. You idiots forget what the atmosphere of comic book movies were like when X-Men and X2 were made. His movies felt similar to Grant Morrison's New X-Men. It's X3 and Wolverine that raped the franchise.
Singer left X-Men to do Superman because it was the right move for a director to work with a better and more open studio. Superman wasn't a completely failure, but it wasn't the success WB had hoped. As a director, Singer suits the X-Men franchise better because that comic series involves drama and relationships. Most of these summer movie fans don't even know much about X-Men anyway. They rate garbage Wolverine 7/10. That says it all.

At least let him make the Wolverine sequel :p

Are you guys kidding?
Bryan Singer is the best thing that happened to comicbook based movies. he made sure it all happens for everyone else!
X-Men was made for around $75M and it made about $300M worldwide.
X2 was made for around $110M, it made about $400M worldwide.
The movie budget of Superman Returns was about $180M. NOT THE FREAKING $270M you guys are talking about. the movie might of been more expensive because of all the junk WB was throwing around. but Singer had a budget of about $180M.
the movie did $391M worldwide. that's more then doubling its cost.
Superman returns was more profitable than Batman Begins. overall made more money then BB. personaly was more enjoyable then BB.
X1 and X2 were really great visuals and storytelling.
Bryan Singer did an unbelievable service to the comic book geeks that have problems finding thier own left nut (im refering to the haters of course).
can you do better? freaking do it! otherwise grow a pair!
for some reason i think this post will be taken down... but why not. im writing anyway :)

Midnight Black, you're wrong and that's the problem. People are separating the two when he's suppose to be both. He's suppose to be the hero who's the most powerful and most virtuous in a world that's constantly against him.
The Superman franchise has always been under the vision of Richard Donner. That's the real problem. It needs to find it's modern equivalent to Batman Begins and I think WB knows it now.

SWEET LORD NOOO! Keep Singer the hell away from superhero movies PERIOD.He doesn't do them well at all.Anyone that thinks the X-Men movies performed the way they could/should have is just not paying attention. The less said about "Superman Returns as a creepy, stalker, deadbeat dad"the better.

Posted by: 67fuifui on June 1, 2009 at 11:33:42

If these messages actually reach the guy...
Bryan,
I think you should go the Tim Burton Route and be an executive producer or an executive consultant on the next X-Men film. U have been successful at a first attempt but you've made it clear that your not a comic book lover or a reader...you enjoy sci fi. Even though X-Men and Supes rely heavily on sci-fi elements, they are COMIC BOOKS. You need writers and staff that are purists of the genre because these are incredibly marketable and profitable films.
The concept of Superman Returns at the core was genuinely solid but it isnt a good story to use when rebooting a franchise. The idea of Superman abandoning humanity so people could survive on its own was actually dynamic and would make for great drama. But not explaining where Kal_el had been and what he learned in the voids of space and time just to return and take on Lex Luthor was a bit of a let down.
Hopefully you can come back to the X-Men world with more clarity and a ability to bring readers X-MEN to the screen as intended.

Although I liked X1 and X2, and though if the X movies stay with Fox, I'd want an ACTUAL X3 (the title for the third movie in the US was actually X-Men: The Last Stand, not X-Men 3, which they could use as the new third movies title), I would MUCH rather Marvel get all rights to all X-titles and start from scratch under Marvel Studios and scrap Fox (same goes for Fantastic 4, etc). Especially after seeing the success of Iron Man and Incredible Hulk, I don't see how they can just allow more movies to be made under the crap that is Fox. If this is undo-able, then at least remake a third X-movie!

We need him back, X3 and Wolverine SUCKED. Bring Singer back and have Marvel be in control, that's the best possible situation.
Posted by: copacetic on June 1, 2009 at 11:46:44
No. He has proven to be a bit of a hack.
Posted by: Fanboiii on June 1, 2009 at 11:48:14
Kiddy summer movie fans ruined comic book movies.
How are these fantards hating on Singer while loving Wolverine? That takes an amazing level of dumb. Wolverine was garbage. Singer is the best thing the X-Men franchise under FOX will get. Yes, it obviously would be better if Marvel had the rights, but that won't happen anytime soon.

New Superman movie! There were a lot of things I liked in the first movie. Many agree (as do I ) he just needs to do something totally new. Forget Luthor/Zod, something totally new.
Posted by: Fanboiii on June 1, 2009 at 11:51:32
Even though Superman Returns went in the wrong direction for the character, it was STILL better written, better directed, and better produced than both X3 and Wolverine. No one with a brain can disagree.
Posted by: johson on June 1, 2009 at 11:52:02
or better yet he should return to the x-men franchise and make the third x-men agian.and if warner bros was smart they should get back richard Donner and let him work on the superman franchise. no one could do it betterthen richard, butin a sence Brian did a good job with the new superman.

Why do they keep on milking xmen or superman !?!?!?!?!!?
what about wonderwoman ? what about all the other comic book characters that hollywood can milk, dose up to the eyeballs with so much sugar that they start to resemble a crack whore whilst marvel/WB/FOX/DC/New Line live in luxury like the blinged up pimps that they are.
Bring back Tank girl !
Bring back Judge Dredd !
Bring back Howard the Duck !
Bring back TNMT !
Why dont the make AVP versus Ash versus Terminator versus Robocop versus Batman versus Superman versus Wolverine with a friggin perm ?!?!?!?!?!?
I know - how about we remake Magneto as an all out camp musical directed by John Walters featuring the cast of the Bold and the Beautiful.
And guess what - it still end up with a bunch of whining freaks complaining endlessly on message boards because they're to untalented to make theyre own movies or actually do anything about it apart from whining and typing down misspent words.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHH ! HULK FRIGGIN SMASH PUNNY HUMANS !!!!
