Singer Interested in Returning to X-Men

Many X-Men fans were disappointed when director Bryan Singer decided to venture off to Superman Returns instead of directing X-Men: The Last Stand, the third movie in the trilogy he kicked off with X-Men and X2 in 2000 and 2003, respectively.

In a recent interview for the July issue of Total Film (reprinted in the Coventry Telegraph's The Geek Files), Singer mused about returning to the franchise:

"I'm eternally intertwined with X-Men now," he told them. "What takes an audience four hours to watch - the first two movies - took six years of my life. So, to not be part of it....It's a shame."

They also asked Singer whether he wished he had directed the third "X-Men" movie, to which he replied, "It's weird for me to watch it, because I'm so close to the universe. And also Brett is a good friend of mine. But, of course, I would love to return to that universe."

Lastly, they tried to get his thoughts on possibly directing the in-development X-Men Origins: Magneto that had been announced years ago with David (Blade: Trinity) Goyer attached to direct. Singer gave a tentative "possibly" response, because he expects it to cover some of the same WWII Nazi Germany territory he's covered before:

" The only thing that concerns me about Magneto is that if the prequel were to follow the track I used in X-Men, which is Magneto's history in the concentration camp, then I've lived in that world. Apt Pupil, X-Men and now Valkyrie...I've lived in that Nazi universe for quite a while. I just might need to take a little break before I do something like that."

He was even less committal about making another Superman movie:

"I don't know, I don't know. There are still issues...I just...I just don't know. I don't necessarily...I don't know. It's one of those things where...It's so weird talking about stuff unless I'm about to ramp up and shoot it."

Let us know below whether you'd want to see Singer return to either superhero franchise.

Man, some of the opinions around here...!!! I loved X-men 3 but know that X2 is the better film.
As for critics of Superman Returns, well good good taste is in short supply these days. SR was awesome and a great movie accomplishment.
Folks really need to appreciate how dfficult a sell a character like Superman is! Singer somehow made him relevant in these modern times which is pretty damn impressive if you ask me!!

he just ****ed up superman bad enough and that is why he wants to return to xmen. had superman been a sucess i think he wouldn't even be talkin about returning to xmen. he's lost my respect because of wut he did with superman and i do not know if i would go see an xmen movie with him directing it even though he did a pretty good job on the first 2. i hope his failure with superman humbled him enough that he doesn't try to stray to much from the essences of the characters nemore.

wow. you can really tell those who appreciate story and character development and those that appreciate explosions and 'bad ass'

i'm not saying you can't have both, but given the choice i'll pick story any day.

johnnybgoode:

Couldn't have put it better myself. Singer is a great director, but Superman Returns proved that the world of Superman just isn't up his alley. Obviously, there are some people who liked it, but there's always going to be people who like a movie no matter how awful it is.

Bring Singer back to the Xmen, where he became one of the most important pioneers of superhero movies this decade! He was a great superhero movie director, and despite Superman Returns, I'm convinced he can become one again.

I absolutely DO NOT want Singer to return to Superman! He REALLY screwed it up and can't wait for the whole thing to get rebooted!

As for X-Men, I frankly don't care if he comes back. If his heart wasn't in it enough to do III, then I guess he's not all that dedicated to the franchise.

HELL NO! he sux!he made all the x-man ***** s. Magneto was to freaken old the story dragged. and any time the x-man actually did use their powers it seemed to take the life out of them. HE SUX! imagine what the director for transformers or iron man would do with x-men. I also hate Fox!

Gosh I would love to see another Superman I think Brian would be excelent to bring it on. He certainly captured the spirit of the superman movies we know and love.Tho its a hard gig to do, the challenge for him must be awestruck. It alot of hard work at the end of the day, tho I have heard another great story line proposed which is supose to be dark and tells a greater depth to the story and is something of a Godfatheresq story where the whole saga ends with superman being the last living being on earth and the sun dies I think I read this in total films special on superheroes, please corect me on this, tho there has been some hints on Superman going bad hopefuly not the superman 3 version. Maybe Singer could team up with the Dark Knights director and forge something realy cool and good and enjoyble that has the element of the best stuff from Superman.

God please dont let him near either ever again.

actually the story was so far off on the first 3 xmen movies (Singer Directed or not) that I think they should take a chance on Strike 3 and get a 3rd director. Honestly who takes an AWESOME pre-made storyline and says lets butcher the hell out of it and create something close but not quite as good.

tha mf'er still owes me a good superman flick

Posted by: gssss on June 4, 2009 at 10:19:46

i sooo hope he returns but i am still pissed of at bryan singer... he made the worst superman movie ever, and because he left x men the third movie was a complete disgrace... anyone who watches all three in a row can just tell the third one stands out as absolute garbage..because brett "i need the money coz im a hack director who even made the third rush hour as crappy as possible" rattner messed it up... hope singer goes back to x-men..

If everyone didn't die in X3 it would have been a really good movie

Posted by: michael clement on June 4, 2009 at 16:16:48

You know who i would like to see play the beast in the upcoming movie to x-men first class it would have to be somebody that is very muscular and well built and that person is bill goldberg and please make the beast blue and not another color.

Posted by: Wolverine on June 4, 2009 at 21:49:04

get away from X-MEN u killed it from the first movie, gambit and beast u should of added already, Brett is the one that tried to fix your problem

He shouldn't touch Superman again. And the X-Men producers desperately need him. But no more prequels! Hugh was really good in a really bad movie.
Re-boot, re-route, or re-imagine. Drastic measures are necessary.

do not let him do another Superman movie.. for X-men.. well.. I don't really care cuz X-men wasn't all that great except for X-men Orgins: Wolverine.. which was ok and not so bad.

Posted by: chavezz on June 5, 2009 at 04:42:33

All the x-men movies suck soo plz dont make another one and kill yourself for making the first 3.

Listen. You can use Brandon Routh. Just bulk him up, for Pete's sake. Make him look not just like Reeves, but like SUPERMAN.

I was just checking out the Wachowski brothers on imdb, wondering what their next project is, and it had a couple of recent articles on there saying they've been approached for and are considering rebooting Superman with 3 films. This could be very interesting, if it's true. Though they have a colder style than the warm, more emotional style Supes usually gets, I think they'd have an interesting take on the hero--and hopefully wouldn't be an affront to Superman tradition, the way Singer did. At any rate, they couldn't do worse than Singer, and they have experience bringing flying messiah-like heroes to the big screen. I guess we'll see.

I've been an X-Men fan since the early 70's, even before the "new team" and I thought the X-Men movies were rotten. Aside from Prof X, Nightcrawler, Storm and Beast - the casting choices were ridiculous. Wolverine is NOT a 6'5" dude. Give the X-Men their ACTUAL costumes; it'll be okay, honest. Spider-Man wears a suit, Superman wears a suit, Iron Man wears a suit...all just like in the comics. Yes, Batman's was changed, but we'll let that go. Reboot this franchise and do it right or don't do it at all.

I was not impressed with Superman The Movie...oops I meant Superman Returns. There were just too many similar plot points between the 2 movies. "Lex Luthor..the evil real estate magnate!" Give me a break. So far the only actor who has done justice to the character of Lex luthor is Michael Rosenbeaum from Smallville. He was Lex luthor. You just wanted to reach through the TV and strangle him with the stuff he did.

As for having Singer do XMen movies, NO...NO NO NO NO. He made Cyclops, the ultimate Xman a background character. That I can't forgive.
