Singer Interested in Returning to X-Men

Many X-Men fans were disappointed when director Bryan Singer decided to venture off to Superman Returns instead of directing X-Men: The Last Stand, the third movie in the trilogy he kicked off with X-Men and X2 in 2000 and 2003, respectively.

In a recent interview for the July issue of Total Film (reprinted in the Coventry Telegraph's The Geek Files), Singer mused about returning to the franchise:

"I'm eternally intertwined with X-Men now," he told them. "What takes an audience four hours to watch - the first two movies - took six years of my life. So, to not be part of it....It's a shame."

They also asked Singer whether he wished he had directed the third "X-Men" movie, to which he replied, "It's weird for me to watch it, because I'm so close to the universe. And also Brett is a good friend of mine. But, of course, I would love to return to that universe."

Lastly, they tried to get his thoughts on possibly directing the in-development X-Men Origins: Magneto that had been announced years ago with David (Blade: Trinity) Goyer attached to direct. Singer gave a tentative "possibly" response, because he expects it to cover some of the same WWII Nazi Germany territory he's covered before:

" The only thing that concerns me about Magneto is that if the prequel were to follow the track I used in X-Men, which is Magneto's history in the concentration camp, then I've lived in that world. Apt Pupil, X-Men and now Valkyrie...I've lived in that Nazi universe for quite a while. I just might need to take a little break before I do something like that."

He was even less committal about making another Superman movie:

"I don't know, I don't know. There are still issues...I just...I just don't know. I don't necessarily...I don't know. It's one of those things where...It's so weird talking about stuff unless I'm about to ramp up and shoot it."

Let us know below whether you'd want to see Singer return to either superhero franchise.

Some of you that knock Bryan for Superman don't seem to grasp they pressure he had on him...basically nobody wanted to touch Superman because Chrisopher Reeve did such a good job nobody wanted to taint it. So yes, they had a certain level of creativity denied because of this shadow cast by the original superman movies, I do agree that the action was lacking, but that's because it was putting too much focus on Clark Kent and Lois and their relationship, which is not a bad thing, but we have the technology now to see Superman kick some ass, and we didn't get too much of it in Superman Returns. It had heart, and I think it is still under rated, but it was watching it was like having sex with your gf or wife and you're just too tired too care...you're just not into it.
The Superman's kid part was probably the only part in that whole movie I went.."oh please...lame"

Now on for Xmen and Xmen2...great jobs, his attention to story and character are great, I cared for the characters in those two movies, I didn't give a **** when they killed people or showed new characters in X3...even Jean Grey's power seemed heartless and over ambitious.

X1 = great intro's (bad line at the end from Storm)
X2 = Nightcrawler White House scene, Wolvie mansion scene
X3 = pile of dog ****.

Superman Returns = Great seeing Superman's power and flight speed, etc, jet scene comes to mind

Watch Singer's other movies, he has a great attention to characters and story, his action talents are still developing, but watch the Usual Suspects and you will say, hey this guy isn't that bad.

"Forget X-men, get him back on Superman with Routh and Spacey and do a proper SR sequel!"

I second this!

Superman was the worst, most boring movie I've seen in a long time. The only memorable scene was when the bullet bounced off his eye. I believe Singer made some great contributions to the superhero movie genre, but I agree with many of the comments here; he lacked the grand vision to really grip our hearts.

Here's an idea, stop making movies altogether! Singer is a f**king hack. I swear there is nobody more overrated in the history of film.

I agree with the people who do not want Bryan Singer directing any super hero movies; studios should learn from Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight Director) he was 85% to 90% on point with the comic books. Bryan Singer decides to make his own story and hope it will turn out okay; he should just stick to his work on House MD other than that, they be crazy if he can bring the franchise I don't care if directed the first two.

I believe Bryan Singer will do a horrible job with the movie; people should read the comics a little more before making the movie, look at "Dark Knight" enough said. The Dark Knight was at least 85% to 90% close to the comic books and look how much money it made in the box office. You want a good movie follow the same strategy; Bryan Singer should stick to doing "House MD", it's about the only thing that is good coming from him lately.

For God's sake...keep Singer and his little writing buddies away from Superman! I liked him for X-Men, but he screwed up Superman...royally!

Please return to the Superman franchise! Aside from Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, Superman Returns is my favorite "recent" superhero film. I thought it was amazing and would love to see another chapter to that story.

Oldespeed2, The Wachowski Brothers are not going to be directing, Superman: Man Of Steel they were mentioned about directing the project but, Speed Racer wasn't a major epic blockbuster movie. Zack Snyder would be a better fit because, I loved his 300 film in 2007 with Gerard Butler and Lena Headley and Watchmen with Malin Akerman and Patrick Wilson in 2009. Oldespeed2 Bryan Singer should be writer and producer of the continuing Superman films he did direct Superman Returns in 2006 and it would be wrong and disrespectful to disclude him. Did, you know Oldespeed2 that Bryan Singer is writer or producer of House with Hugh Laurie I didn't know that.

Mike, Brandon Routh's Superman outfit was far superior to the XMEN's costumes in XMEN and X-2: XMEN United. They were all black and boring and they never wore their 1990's cartoon series costumes. Someone here said, that Bryan Singer should let the XMEN and Spiderman franchises die. I need to get a large pillow and slap him in the face with it What is Marvel without The Amazing Spiderman, The Incredible Hulk and The Uncanny XMEN they started the Marvel comics legacy keep it that way. Superman will never die I saw a guy wearing a black and silver plated Superman T-Shirt at The Galleria mall in my hometown and it looked cool I want to get one.

MojoJackson, Bryan Singer is way above the talent of Joel Schumacher. Batman and Robin was the worse Batman film he created in 1997. Batman Forever was his better Batman film with Val Kilmer, Chris O' Donnell, Nicole Kidman, Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey. Bryan Singer is a visionary my friend he idelized Richard Donner from his first 2 Superman films in 1978 and 1980. I would be more respectful because, Superman Returns crushed both of Joel Schumacher's Batman films in 1995 and 1997. It was the most expensive comic book film ever made in history. It will be in "The Guinness Book Of World Records".

bring back singer'' and have him give rouge, mystique, and magneto their powers back'.also, it'd be awesome to introduce some new team members''such as dazzler, longshot, jubilee, and maybe even havok''bring back cyclops and prof.x, and have some new villians o go up against, arcade would be cool, especially if he's working for mojo, and let rouge fly and have supe strength already''.mystique could get revenge on magneto for his betrayal by nearly killing his daughter polaris, and she could rally some recruits to form a new brotherhood''.avalanche, toad, blob, pyro, and sauron would be awesome''bring back night-crawler too, he was the bomb''.and at the end, have the world face a new threat at the hands of apocalypse, who could be the villian for the next movie''.

Rogue "Do they hurt when they come out?" Wolverine "Everytime..."

More Singer for X-MEN !

Bryan Singer is the reason why we have all these good comic book movies coming out now. Back in 2000 with X-Men, Mr. Singer proved that you can create a comic book movie to be taken seriously. Superman Returns was not the greatest movie but it had enjoyable moments -- he just did not try enough to make his own film, merely to replicate what had come before. I'd give him the deal to make another X-Men as he knew exactly what he was doing. Those that do not think his X-Men movies were good: that's your opinion but we would not have Iron Man or Incredible Hulk without his work on the series.

greatest news ive ever heard

**** Singer. He ruined Superman and he would make the X-Men franchise even worse. First X-Men was good. Second was okay. If this trend continues for him the next X-Men movie he directs will bomb big time. Now he is almost as bad as Uwe Boll.

Posted by: the badguy on June 2, 2009 at 23:22:29

wow? am i the only one who thought all the x-men movies sucked. this guy butchered it. the story was horrible and so were the characters. this fanchise needs someone like jon farveau. singer should hang up his superhero tights.

me personelly woul like to see a x4,because theirs so so many stories to be told, and if anyone has seen the ending of the wolverine game and saw those sentinals and trask,it gave me me a major nerdgasm, and what about sinister, apocolypes, that would make a great movie....well maybe not together but i think u get the idea

Posted by: Superman fan on June 2, 2009 at 23:50:00

Superman Returns was awesome. A perfect tribute to the first two movies. Why is so many people trashing Singer's work when he was only setting it up for the next movie. Sometimes you have to do that just like Nolan did with Batman Begins (it only made just over $200 million also) and you see what happened next.

Posted by: robert eubanks on June 3, 2009 at 00:28:59

yes i would like to see brian singer direct next xmen movie after the debacle of xmen last stand scott summers is not dead you don't see him die jean could have subconsially done something with scott without her alter ego knowing put him in another body or another dimension or just let her alter ego believe she had killed scott

Posted by: Jon on June 3, 2009 at 00:30:48

Please for Gods sake, do not let him make another Superman movie. I like the X-Men movies, especially part 2 but I hated Superman Returns. There were a couple of good scenes but overall it sucked pretty hard. I think they need to make a whole new movie with complete disregard to anything that happened in SR.

And one more thing.....why can't we have an awesome super villain besides Lex Luthor in a Superman movie????? I had heard a rumor where they were gonna bring Spacey back to play him again......why can't we have a different villain? Dammit. Superman 2 used to be my favorite Superhero movie growing up and a big part of it was that the villains were badasses. Come on Hollywood. Keep Singer off Superman and do something different (AND GOOD) with the franchise.

RETURN TO THE X MEN FRANCHISE AND SEE IF THEY'LL ALLOW YOU TO REMAKE THE SAD AND DUMB x3..... AND THIS TIME KEEP SOME OF THE CHARACTERS ALIVE

Posted by: MARVELDC on June 3, 2009 at 03:38:32
