Singer Interested in Returning to X-Men

Many X-Men fans were disappointed when director Bryan Singer decided to venture off to Superman Returns instead of directing X-Men: The Last Stand, the third movie in the trilogy he kicked off with X-Men and X2 in 2000 and 2003, respectively.

In a recent interview for the July issue of Total Film (reprinted in the Coventry Telegraph's The Geek Files), Singer mused about returning to the franchise:

"I'm eternally intertwined with X-Men now," he told them. "What takes an audience four hours to watch - the first two movies - took six years of my life. So, to not be part of it....It's a shame."

They also asked Singer whether he wished he had directed the third "X-Men" movie, to which he replied, "It's weird for me to watch it, because I'm so close to the universe. And also Brett is a good friend of mine. But, of course, I would love to return to that universe."

Lastly, they tried to get his thoughts on possibly directing the in-development X-Men Origins: Magneto that had been announced years ago with David (Blade: Trinity) Goyer attached to direct. Singer gave a tentative "possibly" response, because he expects it to cover some of the same WWII Nazi Germany territory he's covered before:

" The only thing that concerns me about Magneto is that if the prequel were to follow the track I used in X-Men, which is Magneto's history in the concentration camp, then I've lived in that world. Apt Pupil, X-Men and now Valkyrie...I've lived in that Nazi universe for quite a while. I just might need to take a little break before I do something like that."

He was even less committal about making another Superman movie:

"I don't know, I don't know. There are still issues...I just...I just don't know. I don't necessarily...I don't know. It's one of those things where...It's so weird talking about stuff unless I'm about to ramp up and shoot it."

Let us know below whether you'd want to see Singer return to either superhero franchise.

the x-men 3 thing wasn't his fault. He just wanted to do Superman first and then do X-men 3. Fox got upset and THEY decided to go ahead with X-Men 3 and turn the two into a competition to spite him. We need him back in the X-Men franchise to save it because it's going straight to hell after 3 and Wolverine.

my only problem with his X-MOVIES is that he tried set up the PHOENIX SAGA....AND THEN BAILED! personally i think the PHOENIX SAGA is a great story, but should have been totally left out of the movies.

he should have just delt with the mutant aspect of the X-MEN. we dont need to get into the cosmic alien entity and the shi'ar....its just too dang convoluted.

i say give him another chance at the original franchise. make X4 and let him direct. even though i think RATNERs X-MOVIE had way better visuals, it is a fact that the first 2 had better stories.

BUT....for the love of GOD dont let him anywhere near anything that even looks like it might be even considered a SUPERMAN movie. that movie failed in EVERY way...i would like to exclude KEVIN SPACEY, but i cant. i liked him as LEX, but the character was still written badly

Singer should have done like Nolan in Begins and set up his characters with more of an origin story. He should have started the 1st film with Xavier and the original 5 X-Men (Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Iceman, and Angel) and said F.U. to fanboys who'd cry that they wouldn't see Wolverine there first. They could have been fleshed out as characters (like Cyclops as the undisputed leader) and Xaviers own original plans for forming a group of mutant defenders should have been explored in detail against Magneto's altnerate course to create a mutant terrorist liberation front in the Brotherhood with Mastermind, Quicksilver, Toad, and Scarlett Witch or Mystique.

Then, after that movie was done they could have had time to introduce the 2nd great wave of new X-Men like Wolvie, Storm, Colossus, and Nightcrawler just like Nolan set up the Joker for the sequel.

Why are so many people saying bad things about Bryan Singer! X1 and X2 were the only ones i liked out of the franchise! He devoloped the characters, whereas Brett Ratner's X3 was way to quick in killing off certain characters (i.e. Cyclops, Proffeser X....). Also, Angel was only seen in the beggining of the movie, and then at the very end! I do agree though that Beast and the original X-Men should have been in the first movie, but I still agree with Singers contributations to the franchise! GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE, BUT ONLY IN THE MARVEL UNIVERSE (lol)!

Reboot X-Men without Wolverine for a change since he's such a egomaniac and give Cyclops (played by Jared Leto)a fighting chance with a whole different team with Scott as the leader with his brother, Havok (the dynmamics between the siblings could be interesting), Gambit (will take the place of Wolverine), Colossus since they need a strong man, rounding out the team will be Rogue (played by Rosario Dawson), Shadowcat (played by the actress who played Bella in Twilight since it's a reboot), Psylocke (to add a minority to the bunch played by Maggie Q from Live Free or Die Hard), and Polaris or maybe Dazzler. With Ben Kingsley playing the Professor X this time around and the film delves with the Savage Land storyline perhaps where they fight Sauron and the Mutates, or maybe do the the Genosha storyline. Just a thought.

As long as he stays as far away from Superman as possible. Although, I've been watching the 90's X-Men tv show on DVD and by comparison the X-Men movie franchise kinda sucks! I wish Marvel studios had control of it like they do with Iron Man.

VOTE "NO" for Singer on Superhero/Comic Films

Posted by: Phire on June 1, 2009 at 19:33:16

Neither Brian Singer or Fox should be allowed to do another superhero movie. Period.

Yes, I would like to see him make a second superman, but would really like him to return to X-men.

Posted by: stephen p on June 1, 2009 at 20:09:43

just make the damn movie already. stop all the red tape bs, quit crying and make THE MAN OF STEEL. Xmen have started to really suck so just leave them alone for a while. if you let someone else direct, they will just **** it up. ex.. X3/Wolverine

No why should he come back to X-men, he left and the movie tanted, he goes to Superman, and it tanked as well, no way get someone else, he can go cry about his six years somewhere else for all I care.

yes bring singer back. but instead of all these freakin' prequels gear up for an actual x-men 4.

Singer is a brilliant filmmaker.

Please, for the love of God, let him resurrect the X-Men franchise and make his long-promised action-packed sequel to Superman Returns. He can do it, just give the man some damned breathing room.

Bryan Singer should read the Uncanny XMEN comic books to get a bigger insight picture of how the heroes and villains of XMEN were created by Stan Lee. Superman: MAN OF Steel or Superman "Unleashed" should be written and produced by Bryan Singer and JJ. Abrams should direct the rebooted sequel. Guys, Superman Returns was the best cinematographic superhero film of all time. It, won 10 Golden Globe Awards and Bryan Singer won a 1 or more Saturn awards for directing his masterpiece film of Superman. Guys and Girls also Superman Returns was dedicated, to Christopher Reeve and Dana Reeve his wife so he deserves respect for that. I want to see Bryan Singer's "Valkyrie" film from 2008.

Really wish Singer could get another chance to do a Superman Returns sequel. SR set up the universe so well.

Posted by: gunner on June 1, 2009 at 21:37:24

please come back !!
this franchise needs you

Posted by: hitokirivader on June 1, 2009 at 21:41:04

All I want in life is for Warner Bros. to let Bryan Singer make a Superman sequel. Then I will be happy.

Posted by: Triad on June 1, 2009 at 21:43:53

Personally, I feel that Singer is an over-rated director. I really could care less if he directs another installment in either franchise. Superman Returns blew...it had so much missed potential that was squandered. I do admit that his attempts on the X Men were better that Ratner's X3, but even watching those movies again reveal numerous shortcommings.
I have still yet to (and very much would like to) see Valkyrie, though. It sounds promising.

Singer should not be allowed back into the X-men franchise. I frankly was not impressed with his movies. We need a real fan to take the helm.

In my opinion, Singer screwed up the X-men franchise and the Superman reboot. He should not be hired back for such superhero movies.
Ratner was worse...

Okay first order of business, Singer needs to leave X-Men franchise and Superman alone. I like the first 2 films, but how do you come back after the garbage that was X-Men 2. I like SR, but there were a lot of things I didn't like the kid. I think we need to let X-Men Die, just like we need to let Spiderman die! If your going to have someone take a shot at Superman here are my 2 picks. 1.) The Wachowski Brothers, or 2.) Zack Snyder. Either one of those picks would be golden

YES!! PLEASE CONTINUE THE STORY IN SUPERMAN MAN OF STEEL!

Posted by: kiddman on June 1, 2009 at 23:23:02

im waldo- got good ideas but way too many films that you wish to have made..

Singer didn't do an awful job with S.R. but it could have been better & might be if he makes sequel. As far as x-men goes why not let him be a part of the process, x-4 would be pretty cool!

Damm fool should of never took on Superman to begin with. But if he does return to the X-men.Can we finally see Wolverine in costume. But no blue and yellow.
