Singer Interested in Returning to X-Men

Many X-Men fans were disappointed when director Bryan Singer decided to venture off to Superman Returns instead of directing X-Men: The Last Stand, the third movie in the trilogy he kicked off with X-Men and X2 in 2000 and 2003, respectively.

In a recent interview for the July issue of Total Film (reprinted in the Coventry Telegraph's The Geek Files), Singer mused about returning to the franchise:

"I'm eternally intertwined with X-Men now," he told them. "What takes an audience four hours to watch - the first two movies - took six years of my life. So, to not be part of it....It's a shame."

They also asked Singer whether he wished he had directed the third "X-Men" movie, to which he replied, "It's weird for me to watch it, because I'm so close to the universe. And also Brett is a good friend of mine. But, of course, I would love to return to that universe."

Lastly, they tried to get his thoughts on possibly directing the in-development X-Men Origins: Magneto that had been announced years ago with David (Blade: Trinity) Goyer attached to direct. Singer gave a tentative "possibly" response, because he expects it to cover some of the same WWII Nazi Germany territory he's covered before:

" The only thing that concerns me about Magneto is that if the prequel were to follow the track I used in X-Men, which is Magneto's history in the concentration camp, then I've lived in that world. Apt Pupil, X-Men and now Valkyrie...I've lived in that Nazi universe for quite a while. I just might need to take a little break before I do something like that."

He was even less committal about making another Superman movie:

"I don't know, I don't know. There are still issues...I just...I just don't know. I don't necessarily...I don't know. It's one of those things where...It's so weird talking about stuff unless I'm about to ramp up and shoot it."

Let us know below whether you'd want to see Singer return to either superhero franchise.

The continuity in these so called X-men films are so shambled and F'ed up theres no way the sequels are gonna be better regardless of who comes back. These movies dont have any budget to begin with so its basically like watching episodes on T.V. I've had it with the way they are treating X-men, no respect to the comics, instead they just make the actors on screen look like idiots. Go back to marvel.

The Wolfer:

You're right, Xmen's success didn't establish Singer as a great director, his films did.

Fox if you wont let go of the rights to X-Men give Marvel full control and just take a cut.

I would definately like to see bryan singer back to do x-men 4 or x-men first class that would be great for him to do it again.

I'm glad to see so many have caught on that Bryan Singer is not so great at what he does.
I was sorely disappointed at the lack of excitement and drama that could of been on the screen with X-Men. In stead we got another couple heroes in black outfits pitifully choreographed at every step mumbling and fighting for three and a half hours.
With no real character traits to any of them, that you actually care beyond their unique powers. Cyclops always standing straight like a soldier, Storm with little presence, strength or recognizable accent, Jean Grey as just a cardboard love interest who twitches, Rogue as a never fully developed tragic character..
These aren't mutants we read. They are melodramatic stiffs who barely move or talk (and who ALL act like they are teens in a high school)unless there's a fight or their name is Wolverine.

How quickly everyone forgets... Without Singer and the first X-Men movie (which was made before there was a decent comic book movie), there would not be a Marvel studio now and probably not a Batman reboot. Yes, he screwed up Superman for the near future, but he isn't the kiss of death the haters here claim.

It just goes to prove: you're only as good as your last movie.

Midnight Black, X3 better than the first 2 films? No. X3 killed off too many characters, added characters that never existed in the Marvel Universe, ruined the Pheniox saga, never gave the characters enough to do.

to lol:

So what if Singer directed the 1st X-Men movie, which led to Marvel Studios. A bad movie is still a bad movie.

They need to entirely re-boot a Singer-less Superman with a new continuity, and with new directors/writers. NO ORIGIN STORY...just a slide right into a new modern storyline!

I want to believe a man can really fly.....AGAIN!!!

Please return to the series!

Well i would like to see him direct - if this does happen - X-men origins. He was establishing his characters in X1 which i didn't like but blew us away with X2 because they were established !!!! X3 is just like Wolverine - horrible .... but he can do Origins ... no X4 please ... the Xworld sucks after the 3rd . Oh and Superman 2 from Singer would be awesome ... again, look at x2 =)

Here's what it is:

Singer is the Tim Burton of X-Men movies. Both made the first 2 movies incredibly bad, but popular.

Ratner is the Joel Schumacher of X-Men Movies. Both made worse movies than the first 2 in the series, and most people agree with that.

Singer PLEASZ.. just say No! Admit you wouldnt know what to do on another Superman movie even if Richard Donner or Jerry Seigel held you by the hand.
No Oysters 4 U! Butt head!
And take that super skinny Routh and that scuba suit you call a superman suit with you..

Sorry i didnt mean to vent.

Absolutely not on both fronts. Both X-men and Superman desperately need a reboot with fresh blood at the helm. Sorry, no offense but the scripts for both X-men and Superman Returns were horrible. I was especially put off by the end of X-2 where there was too close of a likeness to Wrath of Khan right down to the music and the monologue.

While I liked Superman returns and will not pay to see another live action Superman Inless It Is a superman returns sequel(and further sequel to the first 2 Chirstopher Reeve film)or a spinoff of Smallville he needs to return to x-Men.And reality people.X-Men grossed 157 million domesticlly and revived the comic book film genre which was killed by Batman and Robin.X2 grossed 213 Million domesticly, and Is consded the best X-Men film and one of the best comic book films ever.Since Fox Is too damn cheap to do X4 and only wants to do prequel spinoffs then I hope he produces magneto and directs first Class. He Is needed.

i hope Singer returns to x-men i noticed without him and David Hayter x-men 3 and Wolverine failed.

JUST STAY AWAY FROM SUPERMAN!

Posted by: Ghost Of Sparta on June 1, 2009 at 16:42:19

I cant stand Singer. To me he messed up the X-Men movies with making Rouge Wolvies lil buddy instead of Jubilee and twist the story for whatever he and Fox feel it needs to be.

It's not that hard and they have years and years of source material to go off of rather than create their own Marvel Universe.

As far as Superman goes Im not even going to comment on that waste of time and money,I am proabably the only one who believes this but I wish Singer would leave Superhero Franchise's alone.......

Dude, Kevin Spacey sucked as Lex Luthor. And I would love to see Bryan Singer direct X-Men 4 or perhaps Magneto. Either way I know Magneto's gonna be such an awesome movie. The Savage Land? Wanda and Pietro? F yeah! I totally think Pietro was cameo'd into Wolverine, btw.

However, in terms of Bryan Singer, I would love for him to REMAKE LOGAN'S RUN like I thought he was going to before I graduated high school all those years ago. F The Island, dude, that's a hella different concept. And Magneto will still come out and be friggin awesome, and Maybe David Hayter will start a Metal Gear Movie. And I can die a little happier.

Posted by: Chris on June 1, 2009 at 16:44:06

I don't think a Magneto prequel has to lean so heavily on the Nazi segment... it absolutely shaped who he was but the man had 30+ other years after that -- the big question is where did he go from there? And it also has to be an Xavier origin since their lives were so connected.

If Singer wanted more X-Men movies I would see them gladly. I can't blame Ratner but I suspect X3 would have been much better with Singer at the helm (but a bad plot is a bad plot so who knows).

I don't think Singer was right for Superman, though -- he's like an anti-Schumacher of sorts. Singer on a Death of Superman plot -- YES, otherwise he's too deep and dramatic for such an epic and colorful character.

I don't want him involved with any superhero film adaptation. His take on x-men didn't do it for me. So I never watched Superman Returns b/c I was sure I'd feel the same way about it. I say he's better off doing films like Ususal Suspects.

Who cares, get Whedon to do any and all xmen sequels!

Posted by: franshux on June 1, 2009 at 17:31:17

X-men. The first two films kicked a$$, and after he left, the whole franchise became pure crap. Get Singer back to X-men!! (X-Men First Class, if possible... I think Deadpool would be better if directed by someone with more experience on action/comedy films)

Fox should reboot X-Men all over again, but they won't because Origins: Wolverine made so much cash and they are looking to spinoff from there.

But the truth is that Singer got alot wrong in the 1st X-men with regards to character development, casting and tone which laid the basis for alot of the imperfect characterizations we've seen since. A lack of personal background information, too much attention to Wolverine (who was always underplayed in terms of angst and ferocity by Jackman IMO) at the expense of other characters like Cyclops, and no in depth development of the mutant world the X-Men existed in all made the franchise seem very uneven and underdeveloped.

X-2 was a very well made movie and Singer got alot right there, but it perservered in spite these foundational problems and not because of them.

I personally think he shouldn't have left X-Men, I enjoyed X-men origins alot but Origins and first class is the only option to go now, I thnk if Singer would've stayed to direct the 3rd film, we would still be haveing sequals rather then origins, so he should be apart of the origin franchise for x-men hopefully he'll nut up and do first class bcuz he's an awsome director when it came to x-men
