Singer Interested in Returning to X-Men
June 1, 2009
Many X-Men fans were disappointed when director Bryan Singer decided to venture off to Superman Returns instead of directing X-Men: The Last Stand, the third movie in the trilogy he kicked off with X-Men and X2 in 2000 and 2003, respectively.
In a recent interview for the July issue of Total Film (reprinted in the Coventry Telegraph's The Geek Files), Singer mused about returning to the franchise:
"I'm eternally intertwined with X-Men now," he told them. "What takes an audience four hours to watch - the first two movies - took six years of my life. So, to not be part of it....It's a shame."
They also asked Singer whether he wished he had directed the third "X-Men" movie, to which he replied, "It's weird for me to watch it, because I'm so close to the universe. And also Brett is a good friend of mine. But, of course, I would love to return to that universe."
Lastly, they tried to get his thoughts on possibly directing the in-development X-Men Origins: Magneto that had been announced years ago with David (Blade: Trinity) Goyer attached to direct. Singer gave a tentative "possibly" response, because he expects it to cover some of the same WWII Nazi Germany territory he's covered before:
" The only thing that concerns me about Magneto is that if the prequel were to follow the track I used in X-Men, which is Magneto's history in the concentration camp, then I've lived in that world. Apt Pupil, X-Men and now Valkyrie...I've lived in that Nazi universe for quite a while. I just might need to take a little break before I do something like that."
He was even less committal about making another Superman movie:
"I don't know, I don't know. There are still issues...I just...I just don't know. I don't necessarily...I don't know. It's one of those things where...It's so weird talking about stuff unless I'm about to ramp up and shoot it."
Let us know below whether you'd want to see Singer return to either superhero franchise.

Singer has kinda lost my respect for the X-Men franchise, but may be able to bring it back to life.

Hopefully he does return to the X-Men Franchise he started... lord knows they needed him in the 3rd movie

if he were to come back to the x franchise, it'd be for the magneto prequel. it's much more in tone for what he'd rather do. it wouldn't have to deal with as much special effects. unless they change things around and have apocalypse or other cameos that don't really need to be in it but "try" to please the fans.

Uh, no, Bryan. No X-Men for you. In fact, you've been barred from making any superhero films ever again. While X-Men was decent, we need someone with a much grander vision to do the franchise some justice. We can do without a wimpy Iceman, a near-useless Rogue, a Nightcrawler who was only a true bad-ass while he was under mind control (and then became a wuss for the rest of the film), a sorely underused Cyclops, a miserably miscast Storm, and the most half-assed "Brotherhood of Evil Mutants" I've ever seen. Really, no Destiny? No Avalanche? No Mystique in her classic white dress? No, Bryan. No more X-Men for you. Stick to your little indie films from now on, you're good at those.

Forget X-men, get him back on Superman with Routh and Spacey and do a proper SR sequel!

Leave Superman to Mark Miller and go back to X-Men. All my faith in the X-Men movies have been crushed because of X3 and Wolverine. We need you back Bryan!!

No to both Superman and X-men! "Superman Returns" was straight up unwatchable and the first "X-men" was close.

"Smallville" IS the reboot of Superman's origin.Singer was on the right track with "Superman Returns"...Warner Bros should let him return for a sequel or go ahead with the aborted "Superman Vs Batman" project.

Singer's work on X-men was *OK*. The whole industry needs to learn a lesson from Favreau. Iron Man was the best. A great movie must be believable. Oh, and Hugh Jackman sucks donkey ballz.

He already effectively killed Superman. The studios will never take a chance again. It failed on every level. Most importantly, it generated zero public interest in future Superman movies. You get one reboot chance. He failed. If they ever do make another, it will be another reboot with someone that hasn't already failed once.
He can have a fourth X-Men if he wants it.

SINGER stay away from XMEN!!! You're a good director, but not when it comes to superhero movies.
I like your visuals aesthetics, but not you're storytelling and cinematography. You dumb/water down movies for the masses. EACH of the XMEN movies could've been epic summer blockbusters like LOTR or Transformers, but they fell way short.
There were good parts, but they weren't not the great movies they could've been. STAY AWAY Please!

besides all the spin offs, X4 (mr. sinister, acoltes, sentinals, and juggernaut maybe use the excutionare story line) X5 (hellfire club, mageneto, mystique, other brotherhood members that have not been seen, X6 (would be about the xmen trying to prevent the days of our future past and master mold)
X7 (the brood, X-factor, havoc)
X8 (mr.sinister)
X9 (since they prevented the sentinal future where the machines exterminate both humans and mutants, apocalipse finally comes in after having a cameo at the end of X8)
for the spin offs well most of you already now these but a few of these i just thought up, deadpool, xmen origins wolverine 2, magneto, xmen origins storm (could have the shadow king in it) xmen first class (cyclops, marvel girl aka jean grey, beast before he gets his blue fur, gambit and emma frost could fill in for iceman and angel, probably have the hellfire club, acoltes, and the brotherhood) cable could be in deadpool then get his own spin off which would be X- force, after X7 x-factor could get their own spin off, maybe xmen origins gambit

bryan singer needs to come back and do X4, magneto, as many as he can, because i want to see the francise go back to the way the first two xmen films where, but obviously have more action than the other four xmen films.

X2 had one good scene, the beginning...that's it. The story was ok, but there was nothing to the movie. Barely any fighting. Just more Wolverine and no Cyclops. Barely even used any Xmen.
X3/Brett Ratner did what he could to save the franchise. X3 wasn't great, but it was way better than X1 and X2, even though they killed Scott WAY WAY to early IMHFO. Phoenix could've been developed a lil better in showing the phoenix around her. I liked the concept of her darker side though, if they wanted to stay away from Aliens.
Singer is not a good superhero director. GET That through all of your heads please. He isn't. Get Bay, Spielberg, They directors from Underworld 1 or 3, Blade 1&2, Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Dark Knight, Star Trek, etc.
NOT SINGER!!!!
Oh and if anyone can give me some legitimate reasons why he should do another Xmen or Superman movie please try. Because I have a list of why he should be a cinematographer/set designer rather than a director.
NO Singer!

KEEP SINGER AWAY FROM ALL MARVEL SUPERHERO MOVIES. HE'S THE GRIM REAPER.
Bryan Singer is the death knell for any Marvel movie. I don't think any studio could trust him. None of his movies have reached blockbuster status and Sony and Universal have shown that they can produce the movies with better directors and gain more than $200 and $300 million.
X-Men barely made $100 million and the same with X-Men 2.
Even Superman Returns, while it made $200 million, didn't break the blockbuster status, considering that Warner Brothers spent more than $250 million on its budget and for the marketing for the movie. When you add worldwide sales? It made nearly $400 million but the budget increased to $370 million when you factor in worldwide marketing for the movie.
Bryan Singer just proves that he can take a studios movie, not produce a profit making movie and exceed budgetary limits imposed by the studio.
Just look at Superman. Singer was supposed to stickl to the $100-150 million budget but exceeded that budget by more than $200 million.

Singer was the BEST thing to ever happen to X-men. I can't imagine we'd have ANY superhero movies like Spider-man or The Dark Knight if X-men had been made at FOX without Brian Singer.

If Mark Miller ever has a 'real chance' of working on Superman, I'd find a way to destroy the whole world before he could make the movie.

Superman Returns is underappreciated. Visually, each frame was absolutely beautiful -- a product of careful shot-planning and artful [while subtle] coloring and lighting. For the first time in his entire cinematic history, Superman flew with grace. The money spent on the special effects was well-spent. It's just that the story lacked adrenaline.
Kate Bosworth performed well as Lois Lane but her look was an homage to frumpy-NY not vintage-NY. She needs a makeover.
I understand that the symbol was reduced in order to reveal more of Superman's chest, but it actually had the reverse effect. Bright colors pop. Dark/negative colors submerge. And so by reducing the size of the symbol, most of his chest became dark blue -- and submerged. So it made him look slimmer not bigger.
I've complete confidence in Bryan Singer's ability to tell a story and in his ability to shoot dramatic cinematography. My only concern is his ability to shoot fight cinematography [which will be key in the next film]. This would be easily resolved by letting him experiment with X-Men First Class [like he did in X2] and using those techniques in Superman [like he did in Superman Returns].
Let him do both. He's still among the best comic book film directors in the business.

@David
Did Mark Miller do 300 and Sin City? Whoever did those could do a good Superman Film.
@old fan from the 80s
I don't mind the Superman having a son element, nice twist and conflict for his emotional development and human side. But the movie on the whole sucked or rather did not live up to expectations and that is why many do not like the whole "I have a son" theme. If the movie had been good with external conflict (fighting etc.) than I think many would over look the child element.
@SAM
R U SERIOUS?!?!
"I can't imagine we'd have ANY superhero movies like Spider-man or The Dark Knight if X-men had been made at FOX without Brian Singer."
What do you mean by this?? Are you saying Singer influenced both of these films?
