Hasbro, Inc., Marvel Entertainment, Inc. and Spider-Man Merchandising L.P. announced today that Hasbro will retain rights through 2017 to make toys and games based on new Marvel and Columbia Pictures theatrical releases and on Marvel's globally popular portfolio of Super Hero brands, including franchises such as "Spider-Man," "Iron Man," "The Avengers," "X-Men," "Thor" and "Captain America."

As part of the new agreement (the current agreement runs through 2011), Hasbro will continue to hold the global rights (excluding Japan) to develop products based on Marvel's globally-known universe of more than 5,000 characters and Spider-Man Merchandising's film and television properties in a wide range of toy and game categories, including action figures, role play and preschool toys, board games and puzzles. The new agreement covers both the "classic" comic book look of the characters as well as product lines inspired by television and films.

The license extension guarantees $100 million in royalties with the potential to earn up to an additional $140 million in royalty guarantees, contingent upon the release during the extension period of Marvel character based films that satisfy certain criteria.

In 2009, Hasbro is bringing to market a line of products based on the upcoming May 1 release of the movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine, as well as great classic lines behind Spider-Man, Iron Man, Super Hero Squad & the Marvel Universe. Hasbro is also planning product and marketing programs based on several upcoming releases like Iron Man 2, Thor, The First Avenger: Captain America, and The Avengers.

"Hasbro is thrilled to extend our relationship with Marvel and Spider-Man Merchandising through 2017," said Brian Goldner, Hasbro's President and CEO. "Through the years, Hasbro has consistently stayed on strategy as a brand driven company focused on our Hasbro brands, while selectively aligning ourselves with the best possible global licenses. As we've seen over the past several years, our licensing arrangement with Marvel and Spider-Man Merchandising gives Hasbro an even greater opportunity to expand our leadership position in the boys category."

"Hasbro's ability to secure this license through 2017 speaks to our execution as brand stewards and our ability to translate Marvel and Spider-Man Merchandising's amazing intellectual properties into great toys and games," said John Frascotti, Hasbro's Global Chief Marketing Officer. "Based on our successful relationship to date, and in looking at the scheduled slate of theatrical releases in the years ahead, we feel very fortunate to have access to these great brands for such a length of time."

According to Simon Philips, President, Worldwide Consumer Products and CEO of Animation for Marvel Entertainment, "We are very pleased to be extending our successful relationship with Hasbro. With the huge breadth of new Marvel entertainment offerings coming out over the next few years -- including feature films and animated television series featuring some of Marvel's renowned Super Heroes -- we are confident that Hasbro will continue to fully leverage these properties on a global level. With their firm commitment to the Marvel brand, Hasbro has proven they are able to create innovative products that provide consumers with a standout retail experience. Our continued relationship will enable us to further extend the worldwide reach and image of the Marvel brand."

Juli Boylan, Sr. Vice President, Sony Pictures Consumer Products, the limited partner in Spider-Man Merchandising LP, stated "We are excited to continue our relationship with Hasbro for the 'Spider-Man' feature film and television franchise. With innovative products that truly bring to life the top boys' action brand in the world, Hasbro has and will continue to play a pivotal role in the success of the franchise."

thats terrible news. hasbro sucks. all the figures became less articulate and poorly done since hasbro took over. i miss the old marvel legends line that had so much more detail

Looking forward to the Avengers line the most... when I can afford them, heh.

toyBiz was getting lazy in thier designs near the end as well, none of thier female figures could stand on thier own either... but overall I think ToyBiz did a much better job with the 'Marvel Brand' and Hasbro cancels thier toys without warning and for seemingly no reason.

I'm happy with this news in that it will save me a lot of money. I don't support sub par anything.

They do make amazing Superhero Squad figures though and I wish they could do the same with DC's vault of characters.

I haven't bought a marvel toy since Hasblo took over. Their stuff SUCKS! You would think that after so many years in the toy business, they would learn how to apply paint to a figure, or sculpt a decent looking figure, or do something innovative with the articulation. If they want to concentrate on toys for the little kids, fine, but stay away from the collectors market. Let somebody who knows what they're doing handle the good stuff.

Stupid Marvel.
Stupid Hasblo.

Hasbro isn't as good with these figures as it is with Transformers.

2017, holy shmoly! I'm not sure if I'll still be into Spider-Man and Marvel when I'm 21!

ugh! worst new ever!!!!

i stopped getting marvel legends when they took over! hasbro does not know how to make an appealing figure to save their lives!

Posted by: Edgar on February 17, 2009 at 20:00:35

What about The Incredible Hulk? =(

Posted by: Smiles on February 17, 2009 at 20:05:27

this means new Gambit figures !!!!! and new Deadpool figures !!!! sweeeeeeeeet!!! i dont know too much of the decline in toy quality that you all speak of. but that is really terrible if thats whats been happening. hopefully this wont be another comic-reinvention that pays no attention to the what the fans want. maybe we will luck out. either way, new gambit, deadpool, and cap america will be sweet to check out

I Totally agree with you,I remember the older TOYBIZ works of ART!.. And since hasbro took over it's gone to ****!!!. They should have a separate line just for collectors, not just for kids. And get people who know what the hell they're doing with the marvel characters! not slave laborers who couldn't give to craps about anything to do with the line. "NUFF SAID?" i think so....

Great, more crappy looking figures with hollow feet.

Posted by: Jack on February 17, 2009 at 23:10:08

Hasbro has been hit or miss. I have the 12 inch Ghost Rider w/motorcycle, one of my favorite figs, but unfortunately, they have been mostly miss. That and the fact they keep doing Walmart(I hate Walmart) and Target exclusives therefore making it even harder to find these figures.

The only thing they do better thatn Toy Wiz is that they make the more obscure characters: Domino, Sunfire, Spiral, etc.

Posted by: williby on February 17, 2009 at 23:17:37

hasbro failed at making action figures for marvel. go back to Toy Biz. with hasbro, quality took a turn for the worse

Posted by: blasastter on February 17, 2009 at 23:27:01

How come none of you idiots are complaining about how the figures became total ripoffs once Hasbro took over? These things used to be like $8.00 and now Hasbro sells them for $12? F--- that. I stopped buying them.

Posted by: Jack on February 18, 2009 at 03:19:20

blasastter, a lot of that cost is because of the price of oil. That is the same reason Toy Biz started making the BAF's smaller.

Posted by: Tommy on February 18, 2009 at 07:18:42

are you people really crying over toys? they are little molded pieces of plastic. instead of complaining, get a job with hasbro as a toy developer and do something about it.

What do you mean "you people"?
