Watchmen Box Office Update
March 15, 2009
ComingSoon.net has posted the box office estimates for this week, and while Watchmen managed to take second place its second weekend, it lost a lot of ticket sales:
Zack Snyder's adaptation of the graphic novel Watchmen (Warner Bros.) took a nasty plunge from its strong opening weekend, dropping 67% to second place with $18 million in its second weekend. It has grossed $86 million in North America in its first ten days, though it will be a push for it to get to $130 million before it's gone from theaters.
You can read the full box office update here.

I liked "Watchmen" but it just couldn't hold up against the "People's champ".All of the Rock's movies open at number one.

well, there was a lot of people bashing this movie after it came out, and since there doesn't seem to have a lot of open minded people these days...
Posted by: Beav on March 15, 2009 at 22:55:03
Well, there are still plenty of people like me who haven't seen it but plan to soon.
I bet it hits $130 million before it's done.

If they wanted to make more money, they would have shown no penis, less blood, and less F bombs... instead, they produced an R rated movie that went on really long and then act supprised when it won't make budget.
Posted by: house on March 15, 2009 at 22:58:25
btw... the production budget was 150 mil per boxofficemojo.com

Anybody who didn't see this coming is fooling themselves. After the hardcore, boner-sporting geeks went to see it, there was nobody else in line.
Besides, the movie sucked anyway, so who cares?

fail - i had my doubts then heard awful things about it after opening weekend - this won't be getting my $12.
shouldn't have placed so much faith in a guy that directed 300...b/c personally, 300 was not that good.

Crap! Hope this doesn't put a damper on the superhero genre......but I am kind of happy becuase DC fans were getting crazy with the Marvel bashing. Now they will see its not about the companys but just about getting good movies. Here's hoping!

This movie was different than anything I've ever seen. It's so out there that it's getting mixed reviews from every circle, be it the nerds like me who've read Watchmen, or people that went into the movie not really knowing what it was.
I loved it, thought it was great. Many of the people who criticized it simply didn't understand it, and of those who did, well, everyone's got their own opinion. I think it'll stay steady in week 3. I'll be going with a group of first timers so that I can see it a second time myself.

funny so many people bashing on this movie... when it was really well done. Things that were removed were removed for logical reasons but what was left... some parts of it even went panel by panel with the graphic novel! Which really leads me to wonder... how many of the people who bash on these things, any comic movie, but especially watchmen.... really have ever even read the books? hmm... sad really considering how much can truly be taken from a store so deep and profound as watchmen. It did not win a hugo award and get placed on the times 100 best novels list without good reason. personally i really did not expect it to make a lot of money simply because of the fact this is a movie for the fans of the book. About the R rating thing... yeah it was R rating there goes a lot of the money... but the book would get an R rating or higher if it were on the same scale. It had to be of that intensity to provide even a glimpse of the grisly story that laid within the pages of watchmen.

I saw the movie, it was ****ING awsome.
It was so dead on as a 2hr42min cut could be.
I loved all the changes and things, they all still made sense so nothing was ruined.
This is truly the greatest adaption ever, or atleast that i hold dearest to my heart.

And keep in mind, i've read the GN, comic, whatever you want to call it, and it's my bible.
So take it from me rather from the bashers who haven't even read the source material and expected some Spidey fun-time ****. Go in, with an open mind, and you'll love it. I promise you that.

I guess if the timing was better more people would have went to see it..
FIrst of all its rated R.
Its March not July
Its Recession.
And then there are the critics.
I wish people would be a bit more open minded.
WATCHMEN is and ALWAYS will be a polarized film. You would either hate it or love it (like it)....at least in most cases.
There are very few reviews that stated that its medicore...Either they bashed it or praised it.

Yep its official its the spirit of 2009. The stupid fan boys finally get a faithful adaption and don't like it and spit on it.
Never again people, never again should studios listen to the audience!

Ugh! Of course, being a nerd, I had my problems with Watchmen, but some of these reviews that I have read are bashing the film for ridiculous reasons. The only review that pissed me off was from People Magazine. The "critique" tore the film apart because of Dr. Manhattan's dong and the long running time. And? It's a cgi wiener and you're getting your money's worth with the running time. Suck it, People. Suck it. No squid, but good enough for me to see it again.

@Valaar, I understand your viewpoint on this. I too usually would say let the idea expand, as so many other comic standards have done when transferred to cinema. On the opposite end of it though, is there not some amount of honor to be paid to someone that knows they are handling a very intricate story with a massive following and with that knowledge want to respect the original art as much as possible?

Most money making films is the DVD/BluRay-release. Think all will be fine for the makers. For them it was worth making the movie and I hope they never had thoughts about a sequel or prequel anyway, so relax everybody.
I think it is a good movie and as "mr excellent" says "Many of the people who criticized it simply didn't understand it". It´s okay when people didnt like it, but most of them expected plain action and were not open for the story.

A movie should stand on its own ... not need to be seen in context to a graphic novel.
It simply was not a great film... While it stayed true to the story and ALL the little easter eggs in the comic ... IT NEVER MOVED ME the way the comic did...
I've changed my view... I want to let people do what they're best at... not what a comic says they have to do.
Comic writers deserve no higher pedestal than Screenwriters.
Watchmen should have been adapted better for the medium.
A great screenwriter could have made Watchmen shine.
Instead it flickered.

Everyone should have known this was coming. Honestly, I enjoyed the movie and I loved the fact it stayed so true to the comic. I could honestly care less people hated the blue penis or the long running time. I mean really, is that really why you didn't like it. I think they hyped the movie up so much that a whole bunch of people who had no idea what the **** it was about went and came out confused and/or disappointed that it wasn't full of explosions and a happy go lucky ending. If you liked the movie, you most likely read the book. And if you read the book, good job.

See? I told you it sucked.

I thought this movie was great, and hate to see people complaining about the movie. Some are even calling it the worst movie ever (probably people who've never tried to see Elektra or Daredevil). In any case, I think it'll at least make it's money back, hopefully word of mouth gets better as time goes on.

I still don't understand why this movie was made to be Rated-R. I don't see how nudity and grotesque violence accomplishes anything. Sure, many of the scenes were identical to panels in the graphic novel, but the only thing that matters is that the integrity of the material is intact. You can go on and on about the fact the film wasn't afraid to push the limits of decency, but the bottom line is; was the violence and nudity in the film integral to delivering the message that was meant to be conveyed in the novel?
