Watchmen Gets Shorter
Source:SCI FI Wire
December 3, 2008
SCI FI Wire talked to Zack and Deborah Snyder, the husband-and-wife directing/producing team of Watchmen, who said that the film's final length hasn't been approved yet, but that it is getting shorter:
"We're getting really close," producer Deborah Snyder said in a telephone interview on Nov. 18. "We're at two hours and 35 minutes."
Director Zack Snyder added: "The movie's pretty long ... compared to 300, which was an hour and 58 minutes. The director's cut [of Watchmen] is about three hours and 10 minutes long. It has even more than the theatrical version as far as the detail that gets even closer to the graphic novel."
There's also the "Tales of the Black Freighter" version in the works which you can read much more about here!

Yawn.

Seriously.. Make it longer.. I don't care at all.. The graphic novel mixed with the trailers and the news about the film so far have proved to me (just like Dark Knight had already at this point) that this film is going to kick ass.. So no need to cut too much..
(..But then again, I guess it doesn't matter because the DVD will be the Director's cut.. But I want to see it all 3.6.)

CURSES!!!!!

I will NEVER understand why movie companies can't simply supply TWO versions of the same movie? Have a shorter version for those smaller theaters that need to have more showings in an evening in order to turn a profit (as well for audiences who aren't hard-core movie goers who are not willing to sit through a three-hour movie) and have an extended version for the larger cineplexes that have huge profit margins and can afford to have fewer showings in the evening (and this version will attract the hard-core geeks like us who WANT a three-hour movie). This approach has been working for years with DVD sales (ie. regular and bonus disc editions). The basic edition is for those who simply want to watch the movie, and for rental places like Blockbuster who don't need the extras. The bonus disc edition is aimed at us who want MORE experience with deleted scenes and making of documentaries.

As long as we eventually get the full version of the movie on DVD I'll be happy.

It won't matter. This movie is going to suck balls because Snyder is a hack and if the trailers are any indication, he's *grossly* missed the mark with his creative decisions.
Mark my words: this movie will blow.
Posted by: Zyclonis on December 3, 2008 at 11:48:34
You keep telling yourself that Anton.

Let the whining begin.
Posted by: Brady on December 3, 2008 at 12:02:34
If Snyder can pull this off, it will be amazing. But, there's really no room for gray area here. It's either going to blow ass or kick ass. (Hopefully kick ass, of course.)
Also,
"mark my words"?
seriously?
wow.

At least watchmen wont blow half as bad as TDK. **** hancock was better than that overrated snooze fest.
Posted by: Rufus on December 3, 2008 at 12:24:22
If Watchmen was divided into three movies, then it would have been made into a trilogy with one being released the first year & so on. But Zack Snyder & WB didn't want to go that route & Watchmen may end up being over a two-hour movie in theatres on March 6, 2009.

Well I'll still b there. Already looking forward to the DVD though. Cant wait to see Tales of the Black Freighter

Longer isn't always good. To squeeze everything in and make it a 6 piss movie just aint gonna go down well with those who haven't read the novel. Personally I like the idea of a shorter theatric release (and it's still over 2.5hrs people) with an expanded DVD version. I for one will def be buying the "Tales of the Black Freighter" version.

Aww don't be so mean! Anton's so cute! lol

Every single minute they take off is just another way of making this not WATCHMEN. I really don't think it can work if it is under 2 and 40 minutes so even this running times is pissing me off.

"shorter bad...longer good!"
Is that what she said to you? Sorry to hear that buddy. :)

Well... i don't know if i really care about this.
I mean, surely i would have liked the theatrical version to be the best version, but hey, if the theatrical version is good, then we know the directors cut will be awsome :D
Posted by: heath on December 3, 2008 at 12:44:39
hasn't Hollywood learned yet? we don't mind sitting through 3 + hours of a movie. **** we have too spend nearly 10 dollars anyway. Might as well get our moneys worth. Just leave it be and we will watch it.

Wow, Murray Clack, that is a truly terrible idea.
As someone that works at a theater in a smaller market, we get the shaft enough as it is. We miss out on a lot of stuff, mostly films that have limited or semi-limited runs. We also don't have the same capabilities as even the smaller theaters in big markets have, and we catch a lot of hell for that. Don't even ask me about all of the "But I thought it was in 3-D, the ADS said it was in Disney Digital 3-D!" confusion that we had about Bolt over Thanksgiving weekend. Now, if we were intentionally given a lesser product when the whole thing was readily available in the same format, how do you think THAT would go over? It's bad enough that IMAX gets extra stuff sometimes, but at least it's technically a different format. You can't physically splice a chunk of IMAX film into a 35 mm print. I'm really, really looking forward to this film, but even I wouldn't go see it for FREE at my own theater if I would just have to see the WHOLE thing somewhere else. I'd need to go an hour out of my way to see the real thing, and most people probably wouldn't, so it would hurt EVERYONE more than it would help anything.
What you're basically saying is to give smaller theaters the "This film has been modified from it's original version to fit within the time allowed" TV-style edit, and that is just such a ridiculous suggestion. You really thought it made sense? Running time really doesn't play any part at all in the success of a film. If it looks interesting (and sometimes even if it doesn't), people will come to see it whenever they might have the time, whether there are 4 showings a day or 6. Australia could be showing 12 times a day for us and it STILL wouldn't be doing 4 Christmases business. All the running time really does for theaters themselves is make it so that we have to leave later.

There are some movies that shouldn't be long and some that are supposed to be. I believe Watchmen should be. The trailers tell me it will be awsome though regardless of length.

the more I see and read about this film the less I am interested in seeing it -- I think I'll wait for the DVD hurm......
Posted by: Brian on December 3, 2008 at 12:57:38
I completely understand cutting a movie down between 2-3 hours. Its hard for a studio to sell that in the mainstream. I cant wait for this film, and after the cinema I'll have a load new stuff to look forward to on the directors cut.
oh and **** the squid.
