Marcus Nispel to Direct Conan
Source:Variety, CHUD
June 11, 2009

Variety has confirmed a CHUD scoop saying that Marcus Nispel will direct Conan for Nu Image/Millennium Films, ending a nine-year development ordeal to reinvent the Robert E. Howard-created barbarian first immortalized onscreen by Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1982.

Production on the remake is set to start late this year in Bulgaria and South Africa. Nu Image/Millennium is making the film in a co-production with Lionsgate. Avi Lerner and Joe Gatta are producing with Fredrick Malmberg.

The film will be the most financially ambitious ever for Lerner, with a script by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, whose credits include Sahara and Cowboys & Aliens.

Nispel will make Conan his third remake, after The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th.

Nispel said he will blend his childhood imaginings of the character with the influence of the famous Conan illustrations by Frank Frazetta, and the influence of such viscerally violent period films as Mel Gibson's Apocalypto.

Interesting, I wonder who they will go with.

I loved these movies when I was a kid so I am looking forward to the next go around. I just hope they pick a good actor, not just some muscle bound idiot that looks like arnold.

I wonder how close to Robert E Howard's work this movie will be.

Three letters HHH. That's all I can say. There is no better choice.

Apocalypto was a rather gory movie. I hope Nispel can make something as cool as a Frazetta painting.

Dwayne The Rock Johnson should be the next Conan!!!

Man this will be so awesome and by awesome I mean ****ty. **** I hate; General motors, those hobbit movies and people who write First just for attention I like strippers, white lines and gold Gazelles

Interesting reference to Apocalypto. We were commenting on that w/ one of the other posts on Conan. It has hope if the director is thinking w/ that vision. Not sure how I feel about the writers based on past work. Maybe it can work.

Could go either way. I hope for the best though.

I LOVED the first film...it was brutal and Arnold was perfect for the role. I'm not too thrilled that the ppl that wrote Sahara and Cowboys & Aliens are gonna do this. I'll pass on giving any judgement until I see pics or footage of the film. Fingers are crossed.

Good Luck!

Can't Hollywood be more AMBITIOUS!? they just get crappy directors from the genre to do it again, anyone see PATHFINDER!? freaking boring movie, I see Conan either being highly tinted blue or green and extrememly lame. death to this.

Posted by: WeaponM on June 12, 2009 at 00:16:24

HA! I thought his name was Nipple!! hehe poor guy, must have been picked on in school.

Posted by: Paul PBFstudios on June 12, 2009 at 00:26:35

FACK this movie!!! It has TANK written all over it!!! Once again guys, Hollywood running out of ideas so "lets make a remake of something good, and destroy it Uve Boll/Joel Schumacher/Michael Bay style"

Posted by: abe on June 12, 2009 at 00:33:46

Shawn Apples, HHH tried his hand at acting, in Blade Trinity. He didn't do too well.
Or at least, not well enough to warrant him getting any more major movie roles.
As as Tyler Mane after X-Men.
I understand and applaud your desire to see HHH as Conan, but I personally don't think it's going to work.

Posted by: CONMAN on June 12, 2009 at 01:03:19

ARNOLD IS THE ONLY CONAN!!!!!
Period.
This movie will be an epic failure!!
Why cant hollywood leave these classics alone and come up with some new ideas. or at least re-release classics like Conan back in theaters.

roland kickinger ....dam it , why do people forget about this guy

Posted by: CONMAN on June 12, 2009 at 01:22:12

But can this Roland Kickinger act. I dont want to risk the fckin up of conan on some guy who may or may not b able to act. They should just leave Conan alone. we all saw terminator salvation. NEVER AGAIN!

Posted by: necrow on June 12, 2009 at 01:26:54

i think this guy should direct DETECTIVE CONAN INSTEAD OF CONAN THE BARBARIAN!! What a loser!!

Posted by: GreenNinjaN on June 12, 2009 at 02:09:39

If they're going for Apocalypto meets Frazetta then that sounds perfect. And for the love of god NO Triple H the movie will tank for sure if he's Conan. I would love to see another Conan movie but I would like to see them finally tell the tale of how he became "king by his own hand" like they've been eluding to at the end of the other movies.

I cant believe so many people are excited about this.

Look up who Marcus Nispel is, and the crap he has put out there.

This movie still can be good despite what you think about his past work - which I think isn't too bad. Every director has made bad movies almost. And I doubt this is a remake so they should stop saying that. I don't think this is going to be the same story as the first movie - it's just going to be another adventure of Conan's with a different actor. And Arnold S. isn't the one and only Conan - I'm sure there are a lot of people out there that can pull it off as good or even better. My dad was a huge Conan fan and after reading the comics and going back to the movies I don't think Arnold was really too good as Conan - but just good enough.

But they need to find somebody that can pull it off this time - and I don't think there are any current big name actors that can - I also don't think - again based on the comics - we need somebody as big as Arnold. We need somebody not too big but still muscular that's believable handling a sword like he needs to.

I don't know why people are freaking out so much, since the first Conan film was inspired by a ****load of novels and stories, all of which were different from that film. Hopefully this new Conan is closer to the source than the Ahnuld vehicle.
