Horton Helmer Directing Jonah Hex
January 6, 2009
Jimmy Hayward, who directed the animated Horton Hears a Who! will make his live-action debut with Jonah Hex, the Warner Bros. western based on the DC Comics character.
Josh Brolin is attached to star in the film, which previously had Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (Crank) on board as directors. The duo, who also wrote the script, bowed out over creative differences in November.
The studio hopes to put the movie into production in March or April.
The character of Hex, known for having the right side of his face disfigured and wearing a Confederate army uniform, was a rough-and-tumble gunslinger and part-time bounty hunter whose adventures always ended in blood. One incarnation of his comic book series saw the Western genre combined with supernatural elements, and it's this aspect that was featured in Neveldine and Taylor's script.
Andrew Lazar's Mad Chance and Akiva Goldsman's Weed Road are producing.

I always thought of Hex as an Eastwood film that never happened. Brolin is the first person other than a young Eastwood who I think could sell the character. Looking forward to it!!!!

Sounds good...From Horton to Jonah, that's an odd mix but its things like that and no name directors that can make for a interesting movie. Brolin is a good choice, he plays a good cowboy. I'll be happy as long as its a weird western.

Ya, Brolin was awesome as a cowboy type figure in No Country for Old Men. I thought he had one of the best performances in the movie. He would def. be a good fit.

Jimmy Hayward has done nothing but CGI animation work, I wonder if its going to be CGI?

This'll be great!
Then in the sequel they can have him whisked away to the future to stop a laser war. They'll just call that one "Hex".

Awesome concept for a film. It kinda reminds me of John Wayne's The Searchers and Clint Eastwood's The Outlaw Josie Wales.

The way movies have been going I wouldn't be surprised if they made Hex's hideous scabs (no, we just couldn't cover that multi-million dollar face) a tiny scar and his confederate uniform (god knows that wouldn't be p.c.) a lucky civil war medal or something.

I can see it now: Dr. Seuss's Jonah Hex.
I like my gun
It's lots of fun.
My face is f***d up... I want to kill myself.

Jimmy Hayward should watch 3:10 to Yuma; Butch Casidy and the Sundance Kid; The Magnificent Seven, Pale Rider and The Enforcer and draw some real inspiration from these excellent movies. Add a little dabble of Shanghai Nights and this movie is over! Stick with the Hard Core gun slinging lead character in a deep setting with rich plot.

I'm keeping an open mind on the director. Besides Jon Favreau's last 2 movies before 'Iron Man' was 'Zathura' and 'Elf'

Nice to see that's a change in the workings here.
Drop the supernatural aspect all together and make it a hard western in the tradition of the spaghetti westerns, and Unforgiven.
That's what made Eastwood into the cultural icon he's become.
Since its about bullets, and blood for bounty.
It should almost write itself.

I hear Clint Eastwood's name thrown about a lot in these comments. Do you really want an actor of Mr. Brolin's character to do a poor mans impression of The man with no name? Have you seen Oliver Stone's "W"?
Go for the gusto, and just make it an old style western with lots of action and a great story. A real two fisted tales kind of movie. I hope they go back to all the old western comics, not just Jonah Hex, and really examine what can be used in a movie like this.
I wish them the best of luck with this project!

I would have preferred Tom Jane as Jonah, but Brolin is a great choice anyway.

Its amazing that DC can't get their big three off the ground and onto the screen (other than Batman, of course), but they will go ahead with such a sidelined character as Hex. Not that I think it will be bad, in fact it might be real interesting, but I would rather see them focus on turning their main characters into silver screen gems.

james ford you are wrong about jonah hex suffers from the same problem as THE PUNISHER actually the The Punisher failed because the trailer was very poor plus they never treated The Punisher as a action movie they just did the movie with no sense Jonah Hex could work if they respect the character like all superheros movie should plus Blade was a underrated character and when it was turn into a live action movie people loved it
