Frank Miller Helming Buck Rogers
Source:The Hollywood Reporter
December 19, 2008

Frank Miller and Odd Lot Entertainment, the creator and production company behind upcoming The Spirit are close to teaming again on the classic sci-fi property Buck Rogers, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Odd Lot is in negotiations to option the rights to "Rogers" from Nu Image/Millennium, which obtained those rights this year from the Dille Trust. Millennium is expected to get a credit on the movie but won't be involved in day-to-day production.

Miller will write and direct his own big-screen take on the comic serial; while the creator has only begun to sketch ideas, it's expected to be a darker take, with many of Miller's signature visual elements and themes, such as corruption and redemption.

It's likely to be a priority project for Miller, though he has been mulling a Sin City sequel.

One of the first pop-culture vehicles to tackle the issue of space exploration, the story of Buck Rogers began life as a comic serial in the late 1920's and early '30's and has seen numerous film and television versions over the years.

I'm surprised anyone's letting Miller direct feature films still, what with all the negative feedback surrounding The Spirit.

Frank, you just ****ed up The Spirit.
Are you just mining for classic pulp properties to destroy with your "vision"?

I don't think darker is always better. I can't even imagine a Frank miller version of Buck Rogers. He is great at what he does and he should stick with that.

wow. this is so stupid. miller hasn't done anything good since the dark knight returns and that had its cheesy moments too. i think we forgave him b/c it was the 80s. he needs to get with the times and realize that he's over the hill and saying "god damn" isn't badass nowadays.

Posted by: Hm. on December 19, 2008 at 02:17:51

chill out. The "god damn" part is the point. it was a friggen satire.

Why is everyone ready to tar & feather Miller before The Spirit has even hit the theaters? I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a huge fan of his film-making style since it seems apparent that it is very similar to Sin City's, but I'm not going to praise nor condemn it before I see it for myself in it's entirety. Hell, It might just surprise us all and be truly amazing & groundbreaking (well, maybe not the latter, but ya never know?)
I'll be going to see The Spirit when it's released and pass my judgment then.
Who knows, maybe a stylized Buck Rogers might even be pretty cool.

Whoa, whoa, whoa- Let's just wait a second here- The Spirit hasn't even come out yet, it may not be that ba...I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm laughing too hard...wait...OK, I'm back

I'm sorry, I've always really liked Frank Miller, but he needs to stop adapting other properties. I'm not even a Buck Rogers fan, but I'm sure there are many people out there who are and have been waiting for a real adaptation, not the same Frank Miller signature colors and wanna be bad ass dialogue. I loved Sin City, but I can't stand every other movie he makes that rides that wave. What's next? Frank Miller's Superman? God help us.

Uh... Why?

You are aware he has adapted one movie and it's not even out yet, right? Why is it that Sin City can get away with his style but not The Spirit? I will never understand the bad buzz from fanboys for this movie.

Buck Rogers could probably only be any good in this age if it is a little dark.

Posted by: Brian on December 19, 2008 at 03:19:05

oh and I cant see Buck Rogers working hi contrast Black and White.

"You are aware he has adapted one movie and it's not even out yet, right? Why is it that Sin City can get away with his style but not The Spirit? I will never understand the bad buzz from fanboys for this movie."

Miller can get away with his style on Sin City because it's his property. He wrote and illustrated the comic. It was his baby. The Spirit isn't. The Spirit is one of the oldest characters in comics suddenly looking like this is the sequel to Sin City.

I won't pretend I'm a fan, hell, I don't know anything about the character, but I can't imagine Miller did justice to the character in this movie. It's like Miller's work on Batman outside of Year One. You can't mistake Miller's Batman for the real Batman. It's Miller's take on the character, which is exactly what this film looks like.

It's something that works in comics, but when your taking a character that most of the public doesn't know and make the first film such a radical take on the character, you've just destroyed any hope of ever seeing a real movie based on the character, and that pretty much sucks.

Posted by: Oh fer f**** sake! on December 19, 2008 at 03:49:28

Ok first of all @ Stryder..
You had better hope Miller never gets near Superman, cause hes always disliked the character.
@ Savage..
The problem with Sincity "getting away with this style" is that it was first? Miller doing the Spirit in the same way makes it look like a Sincity sequel? Ive said this before, anyone walking into a movie theatre who DOESNT read these sites, who sees a poster for the Spirit will think AT LEAST that hes a character from the Sincity films...and its fare from original?
And finally @ Frank Miller... frank, move along, youve done the "pulp fiction paperback" look and dialogue to death now, do something else, its getting tired now, oh and stop thinking your a film maker, your not, your thing works in comics, but not in movies, read what people are saying about your cackhanded approch to the Spirit and stop now.

Does Miller plan on giving Gil Gerard, star of the 80's series a cameo? What about Erin Gray who played the love interest? She was hot!!!

Posted by: Wuertz on December 19, 2008 at 04:22:13

So now he's gonna make Buck Rogers look like Sin City? How original.

Posted by: Bobor on December 19, 2008 at 04:24:36

Wilma WAS hot

heres the skinny...

If you dont like Frank Miller or at very least respect his work, you DO NOT RESPECT/LIKE COMICS.

Like it or not he is one of the godfathers of modern comics along with Alan Moore. Without Frank and similar writers Batman would still be camp, there would be no Dark Knight film, Daredevil would be a cheesy ass (he is in movies but not in books now), etc.

I am not sure he is right for this but hes enough a of a talent to make me at least intrigued.

I cant believe some of the posts on here...just shows that theres alot of people on here who have never actually picked up a comic book.

Posted by: Piti on December 19, 2008 at 05:09:52

He should helm the Daredevil reboot!
That would be epic.

Posted by: vk@nyte on December 19, 2008 at 05:13:23

Oh and while I'm at it this thread blows. You guys are talking about this guy as if he's done 5 movies already!!!Let's get this straight now!
300-Zach Snyder
Sin City-Rob Rodriquez
Daredevil-Mark johnson
and yes he was named co-director on the first two...but thats CO-DIRECTOR!!!!In otherwords "Just Helping Out"

Christ half you idiots never heard of Miller til 300 came out then went to BarnesNfreakin-Noble to find the paperback..THERE IS NO PAPERBACK ASS!!

Also really umm,if you guys are so effin brilliant, then put some quality info out there that backs up your comments!!

Nobody likes a douchebag who doesn't know what they're talkin about...You guys probably think you're irish if you drink Killian's Red fer chris'sake...

HAve to say I am not a "Big" fan of miller, but I am not going to put down his work, or say I don't like it, until I have seen it

Posted by: A Bit of Perspective on December 19, 2008 at 06:20:02

I think Miller can do a good job with this as long as its not another green screen project. It was cool for 300 but it got old quick and now its time has passed.

Posted by: Keep Frank away from films on December 19, 2008 at 06:33:03

I wonder why is it producers think Frank can direct? Has he gone to film school? Does he even know what directing is about? The Spirit looks like a hack. We may all be wrong but I'm pretty sure it will suck. Maybe after it comes out and fails Hollywood will finally send Miller back to where he belongs. You gotta blame Robert Rodriguez for this.

"it's expected to be a darker take, with many of Miller's signature visual elements and themes, such as corruption and redemption."

That to me just doesn't sound good. I'm not a Miller hater but Buck Rogers isn't very dark and it isn't black and white with the odd coloured element and themes like corruption and redemption aren't a big part of it. He was against a tyrannical dictator in the future. It's an old fashioned saturday morning serial type adventure with clear cut heroes and villains. If he wants to do a take on it, I think a comic book would be the ideal medium. I don't think putting Buck through the Frank Miller lense on screen is going to appeal to Buck Rogers fans (assuming there are any) or the general audience. Maybe he won't be doing it all green screen and Sin City style in which case it might be alright (Zack Snyder managed to capture a Miller feel without emulating the Sin City style other than the use of green screen). I hope so. If they're changing the existing property to what it isn't because they've got Miller on board, that's a mistake. He could write his own space pirate adventure in his style in stead and do Buck Rogers with someone else. Basically I hope he doesn't let his film making experience with Sin City mean all his films will be black and white on green screen with cartoon exaggeration because that only works on certain ideas.

Posted by: Rob on December 19, 2008 at 06:47:07

Also howcome a few comments on here seem to say if you don't like everything Frank Miller does you don't like comics or like vk@nyte assume people had never heard of him until the films?? People are allowed to not like everything Frank Miller does and saying people had never heard of him with nothing at all to back this assumption up doesn't actually make any point at all.
