Aaron Johnson on Kick-Ass
September 2, 2008
Aaron Johnson talked to the Daily Mail about landing the title role in Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass adaptation.
Written by Mark Millar and drawn by John Romita Jr., the Marvel Comics' Icon imprint book centers on a high school dweeb named Dave Lizewski who decides to become a superhero even though he has no athletic ability or coordination. Things change when he eventually runs into real bad guys with real weapons.
On Tuesday, Aaron was having wardrobe tests out at Elstree film studios.
'Dave (Lizewski) is just an ordinary guy; he's not geeky, but he's not cool either.
'He gets his kicks dressing up in a makeshift super-hero outfit complete with Timberland boots.
'He goes out to try and find some crime to prevent and ends up getting the hell kicked out of him because, obviously, he's not a real super-hero.
'That's the thing about Kick-Ass,' Aaron explained. 'It's set in the real world and poor old Dave ends up in hospital.'
The article states that shooting starts on September 6 in London, then moves to Toronto, before returning to the U.K. for a further nine weeks of filming.

Kick Ass is a cool read. I'm just wondering if they'll stick w/ the violent nature of the comic...because it is very violent and the central character is a young teen. You have to wonder will the studio have the courage to be truthful to the source material(which is pretty straight foward) and not PG13 this thing. Why even make the film at all?

Maaan... this TDK "WATCH IT TWICE WITH YOUR FRIENDS AND WE'LL ROOL CUZ TITANIC WON'T BE NUMBER ONE!" type stuff is really getting on my nerves. Let it play out. I doubt Titanic fan-girls went around doing this sorta stuff. If TDK truly deserves America's number one spot, let it play out naturally and it'll happen.

@ john n
i completely agree - it needs to be a hard 'R'. it's the reality of what would truly happen to a persons body if they underwent this lifestyle.
@ cy-ed
agree with you as well. it's a 6 issue miniseries that only has 3 books out! i just hope they don't stray the way wanted did, or i'll be disappointed - again!
@ u poor loosers
yer so very edgy and unique with your 'it's not even that good' statement.

I dont think Dark Knight would have done nearly as well if Heath didnt die.. its all about peoples sick fascination with death... they wanted to see what the hype was all about.. if heath was alive, it would have only made around $300 million.
I liked wanted, it was a good movie for what it was, even though they didnt really copy the book in every aspect.
Is Vaughn still going to do the Thor movie? seems like thats been on the back burner.

Don't worry Millar even said it will be R and as violent as the books, he said thats why they had a hard time trying to get it made with studios. I think this will be awesome though.

I'm really looking forward to this movie. I haven't read any of the books, but this intrigues me...could be an awesome, bad ass action movie...

Damn.....FINISH the mini-series before you start developing a movie! The comic book mini-series is still in the middle of its run! And granted----it IS a good book so far----but I your eagerness to sell a movie deal doesn't delay you in WORKING ON THE BOOK ITS SUPPOSED TO BE BASED ON!

Marvel should be kicking themselves for not getting involved in this film.. it's still not too late to distribute it through marvel films/paramount..

THIS IS NOT DARK KNIGHT NEWS SO **** OFF WITH YOUR DARK NIGHT COMMENTS!
YES IT WAS GOOD BUT ITS OVER!
that said, Mark Millar is like the oposite of Alan Moore.
he WANTS his movies made, even if its just 4 issues out of an ongoing series.
They shouldnt cut back on any violence tho.
make it NC-17 if they have to.
people will see it.

I'll be keeping an eye out for this one. The books are great and if they don't deviate too much from the comic this should work.
That said, I don't think I am the only one who feels or thinks this but TDK kids need to cram it. Seriously, you're obnoxious. I'd like to go to a thread sometime this month that has nothing to do with TDK and not read about TDK. I don't care if it "rulez" and I'm not interested in reading you panhandlers trying to lobby for us to buy more tickets. I'm not a hater, I liked the film, just shut the hell up already.
You TDK children have been polluting every thread for the past couple of months. Put it away, it's far beyond played out and at this point people who just say "first" are beneath you. Think about that.
Posted by: Harish on September 3, 2008 at 05:20:57
You made me think an interesting point, Vex... MAYBE... these TDK kids are actually 'firsters' trying to take away attention from themselves?... MAYBE... it's a conspiracy...?

Why are people talking about Dark Knight? Anyway answer John.N,the people behind the Kick-Ass said it will be just as violent as th comic book.Cant wait for this movie.

The fourth book came out last week. There's more of "ninja girl" and we see her father whom Nick Cage will portray. Let's hope they keep his dialog to a minimum as they did with the character in #4. I don't want to see them do what they did with "Bangkok Dangerous". There the main character was a mute assassin for hire - no dialog - which gave him some intrigue with his interaction among the supporting characters. The new remake with Cage changed the main character to where he does nothing but talk. I presume to feed Mr. Cage's ego.

I just bought the first issue of Kick-Ass directors cut. I'm going to read it now. Hope the movie is good.

@ Anonymity's B*tch:
You're spot on about Nic Cage. He thinks he rulez but ALL his recent movies suck!!! ;)

KICK ASS 4 came out last week, along with a great single issue book of the first 3. I like it but I don't get the whole mania, "this is the best comic ever" thing. I'm definitely sticking with it because I like the creative team A LOT, but I don't think it's the holy grail of comics.
Then again, everything sucks these days. Don't get me going on Spider-Man...
