It's a Lion! It's Huge! It's Voltron!

Last week, it was reported that New Regency had put Voltron: Defender of the Universe into turnaround. The news said that Relativity Media is now backing the property with a more moderate budget, utilizing the type of cost-effective technology employed in films like 300. A director was going to be attached in a week.

Now, Latino Review has learned that Max Makowski will take on the directing duties for the project, which was written by Justin Marks.

Makowski directed 2005's One Last Dance, rewrote the screenplay for the Hawaii Five-O feature, and is attached to the direct the big screen adaptation of 1970s TV series Kung Fu and the Shinobi remake.

Voltron: Defender of the Universe is described as a post-apocalyptic tale set in New York City and Mexico, where five survivors of an alien attack band together and end up piloting the five lion-shaped robots that combine and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron that helps battle Earth's invaders. It is based on the popular 1980s Japanese animated TV series, comic books and toy line.

Meh... this'll just seem like a Power Rangers Redux. Yes I know Voltron came first but overall that's how people will view it. Hollywood is goin just too crazy with 80's cartoon movies, wake me when Thundercats is ready.

Good or bad...I'm lookin forward to this film...watched Voltron evryday when I was younger...It was the reason I woke up early on school days...no high hopes of it being huge tho...Bom Chica Wah Wah

Dude, I have been waiting for this! I have the DVD collecion and have turned my kids into Voltron fans...Thudercats would be cool...but so would M.A.S.K. and even better STARBLAZERS!!!

Anybody else notice the strange new popularity surrounding 80's cartoons-turn-live-action movie? Voltron, Transformers, GI Joe, Thundercats(ish), Fraggle Rock...not that I'm complaining!

god i hope they don't kill all my favorite anime characters!! voltron is a classic....shouldn't they wait until micheal bay is done with transformers and then ask him to direct voltron? cuz if its gonna envolve blowing **** up bay is the man.

@ symbiote-magnus, in the original story the setting is on a post apocalyptic Earth. This is edited in the English dub among other things.
