John Woo to Direct Caliber
Source:Variety
July 17, 2008

John Woo will direct comic book adaptation Caliber, to be unveiled at next week's Comic-Con in San Diego, reports Variety.

The film looks likely to be a three-way co-production of Johnny Depp's Infinitum Nihil, Barry Levine's Radical Comics and Lion Rock, the U.S.-based company that Woo runs with longstanding partner Terence Chang.

Radical Comics' hit story sets King Arthur and his knights as 19th century gunslingers in the Pacific Northwest.

The Knights of the Round Table using guns with an unusual twist on King Arthur. Thunder instead of bullets sounds a little like a video game I played once, I can't remember the name but this does sound like a good choice. Just like every other comic adaptation...We'll see how Woo uses the source material and translate it to the big screen. I am now officially glued to this one!

They should skip this junk and make the Preacher into a series of movies, cause it has an ending and it totally kicks arse. The Saint of Killer's is the only guy I want to see never miss.

I'll probably check this out, I'm always interested in another re-imagination of Arthurian mythology.

I liked the ideas used in 2004's "King Arthur". So it'll be interesting to see how they do this one.

In an after thought... John Woo could probably make a good, live, "Trigun" adaptation.

@FireFly

Thanks for the heads up.

It sounds interesting, but I have to admit it gets me kind of riled up about the 'Preacher' series too. It was supposed to be being developed for HBO. Haven't heard any news about that since MSJ (the hero killer) said that he showed HBO a treatment and they liked it, but there was going to be a change in management. I take it new management didn't approve? They have new shows in the works, but they aren't 'Preacher', I noticed. I gotta say, I wouldn't mind it if the whole thing was let to slip from Johnson's grubby paws, as much as I'd like to see the series happen.

Maybe this Caliber thing will placate me a while though.

John is fairly talented. Just curious is he lonely? my friend saw his profile on a celebrity dating site with many nice photos. It seems called 'Ri ch ki ss. c om'. Is he dating someone there?

What the hell back? That was a totally random and disturbing comment. As for Caliber...meh sounds a little strange.

IMO i think this will bomb... i just don't see a wider audience buying into a western with a King Arthur spin and a fantasy-like mystical gun. Very difficult to blend a well-known fantasy/legend story into a hollywood western movie (people have preconceived notions of what hollywood western storyline should be) and get the audience to accept it.

I agree with Jay. It's gonna be a hard sell, but I'm interested in seeing how it turns out.

And casting Viggo as Arthur ain't a half bad suggestion. Matter of fact, between the odd nature of the material, the style of John Woo and Viggo's prior poetically violent roles, I'd say that was a bullseye. Good call, Amarillo Black!!!

Awesome. Can't wait to see this.

At last John Woo is finally making western. The concept sounds great - hopefully Johnny Depp will be in the film too. It will be great to see a "Sergio Leone" style western again!

I'm already looking forward to Woo's Red Cliff.

I hope this works. Something about this reminds me of Firefly and I really loved that show (not the Serenity movie as much but that's because Joss felt the need to kill everyone off). Hopefully we can get some more of the smaller comics out there to reach the big screen and generate interest for more than just the Big 2 publishers.
By the way, Firefly's Enigma, thank you for the explanation. I haven't heard of this title before and it's nice to find out that something like this is out there.

Nah, this movie won't see the light of day...

Isn't there a "sorcery zombie gunslinger western" in developement already? The wretched I believe it's called and Chow Yun Fat is attached to start. We could be seeing the dawn of a new genre.
They should just adapt SKs Gunslinger series already!

for the record, mission impossible 2 was one of the worst movies ever, i hate it

jon woo please go back to films like the killer, hard boiled, and a better tommorrow..

Dont know about this one the gun shooting thunder is a kool idea but the whole King Arthur in the Wild West is a turn off to me...

But who knows it could even be as good as Watchmen's gonna be!!!

This comic sounds like a complete rip off of the sub historical background from Stephen King's Gunslinger series where Roland is basically a decendant of King Arthur and that Excalibur was melted down to create the guns that the Gunslingers used.

King should sue.
