Nu Image/Millennium Films has announced the return of Red Sonja to the big screen. The film will star Rose McGowan as the mythical flame-haired comic-book vixen with a sword, Red Sonja. The film is presented by Robert Rodriguez and will be directed by Douglas Aarniokoski.
The producers are Rodriguez, Avi Lerner, Boaz Davidson, Joe Gatta and George Furla. The film's executive producers are Danny Dimbort, Trevor Short, Luke Lieberman and Nick Barrucci. The screenplay is written by David White. Red Sonja is based on a heroine created by Robert E. Howard and adapted for Marvel Comics by Roy Thomas.
In her return we find Red Sonja, a young girl risen from the ashes of tragedy to become the most feared woman warrior of all time. The mythical red-head blindly seeks vengeance on those who destroyed her family. In her path of destruction she discovers a larger purpose for her unearthly powers: to save all Hyrkania from the villainous Kulan Gath.
"This is an amazing property and film for our company," says Nu Image/Millennium's Avi Lerner. "Working with the talented Robert Rodriguez, having Rose McGowan as Red Sonja and Douglas Aarniokoski directing is a fantastic combination. We could not be happier."
"It is our intent to take this opportunity to build on the worlds of branded entertainment with Red Sonja as well as Conan, Hercules and The Three Musketeers titles. There is history with these mythical heroes, and success," says Millennium's Boaz Davidson. "We were pleased when Joe Gatta brought us this project."
Production is set to begin in October of this year. Locations are being scouted in Michigan and throughout the United States.
Additional casting is also being considered.
Executive Producer and Vice President of Red Sonja, LLC, Luke Lieberman says "Red Sonja is a unique character with a rich history and bright destiny. Her struggles and triumphs have endured in the hearts of fans for decades, and now her legend can reach a truly global audience. Rose Mcgowan's passion and Robert Rodriguez's vision will bring the 'She-Devil' to life on the grandest of stages."
"Dynamite has been publishing 'Red Sonja' comics for the last several years, reinventing the character for a modern audience and we're exceptionally pleased that the right combination of talent has been found to bring her to life on the big screen. It was a long search -- three years -- but Rose is ideal for the part, and Robert as producer will ensure that a pure creative vision remains in place, and captures elements of the stories that Dynamite has been telling," says Executive Producer Nick Barrucci. Barrucci is also President/Publisher of Dynamite Entertainment.

Long Live Firsters is actually Kill All Firsters.

She's doing to Rodriguez what Nielsen did to Stallone. (Wrecked the first marriage, leading him into dopey career moves).
Hey Robert, get your hand out of the hunnypot, quit screwing around and make Sin City 2 for God's sake!

Note to Rodriguez:
Pick a ****ing movie and go with it.

I have to agree that RR is not all that good a director and Ms.Mcgowen doesnt fit the bill as Red Sonja. Man RR you already got her in the sack can you stop shovein her down our damn throats now....sheesh!!

Well if he plans on making either movie for all man's sake give us a body and face worth looking at besides pasty white McGowans. I think she ruined Charmed.

This movie sounds like a total waste of time, energy and money. Red Sonja will be pretty hard to pull of and I'm assuming she would be played by Rose McGowan (yikes!!!). Where is a young Sandahl Bergman when you need her. She really pulled off being capable with a sword. I just don't see that in Rose. I hope they can pull it off, please RR, prove me wrong.

I didn't even know that they were considering a Red Sonja flick. Why does it have to be Rose McGowan though? Can't R.R. find someone that would do a believable job instead of casting his girlfriend?

That was actually Tarentino's segment.

"I TOTALLY LOVED THE PART WHEN SHE GETS ALL BROKEN AND BLOODY FROM SITTING IN THE WRONG SIDE OF THE DEATHPROOF CAR!!! LOVED THE MOVIE DEATHPROOF AND LOVED KURT RUSSELL IN IT AS WELL AS HIS WAY OF OFFING ALL THOSE SNOBBY BIT CHY CHICKS, VERY CLASSIC!!! BUT YEAH BEST PART IS WHEN ROSE BITES IT AND HE BREAKS HER BLOODY BIC MAC STYLE!!! FOR THAT ALONE THANKS R.R.!!!"
Man, you have some serious issues. See a shrink and figure out your problems with the opposite sex.

Well, I'm a little bit disappointed with this. Red Sonjais like, well a hard to pull character and a tough girl. I don't see Rose McGowan doing it. I tink she could have been good for Barbarella tough. After all, it's almost the same role as what she did in Grindhouse.
At least, could they wait a couple of year so Schwarzy is available again and can make anoter cameo? It was the best part I remember for the old movie. (That and the concept of the cyclopean who see the moment of his dead. Cool Idea)

Hey, here's a crazy idea - how about making SIN CITY 2 already!
I really don't give a **** about RED SONJA or BARBARELLA when SIN CITY 2 is what we all want to see.

Long live Bridgitte Nielsen? Only if we could keep her looking the way she did in the original. Have you seen her now? She looks more like the Ahnold every day. It's sick.

I say cast another chick as Red Sonja. Someone taller.Rose McGowan doesn't need to be in every film. Wishes Rodriguez was back with his wife cause they have a tone of kids and I know that's hard.

Come on Robert, hurry up and make Sin City 2! please, for the love of God, just make Sin City 2!

why remake movies that were **** anyway. & mcgowan, by far the least hot chick n deathproof (or anything else she was in i'm sure)
Posted by: Drunken Monk on June 26, 2008 at 23:24:56
Dude...did you just call Red Sonja ****? Have you ever seen Bridgette Nielsen when she was young and in that movie...? That shaped my childhood perception of women dammit! How dare you...!!
Lol, which might explain why I'm attracted in part to women who could potentially kick my ass, and I can fight...lol.

Red Sonja would be a great movie to remake as long as they don't actually re-make it. If you have read any of the books or the Dark Horse comics you will see that it has awesome potential for an excellent movie. Is RR the right director? Possibly...depends on how he presents it. Is Rose McGowan right for the part? NO. She can not pull off what would be required for a convincing Red Sonja flick. As it is.....I am not ethusiastic. The novels by David C. Smith and Richard L. Tierney were some of my favorites growing up and the more recent Dark Horse comics are excellent. No Rose!!!!

sorry...meant Dynamite comics. Mixed it up with my Conan. I vote for Jessica Biel for Red Sonja. Did you see her body in 'Chuck and Larry'? She could go red head easily. Athletic, too.....
*drools at the idea*

LOL!! Nielsen would still kick all your a$$$ (mine too!) She's still a big enough whack job that she'd probably considering doing it again (until she found out it's not a reality gig)....
