Robert Downey Jr. in Talks for Cowboys & Aliens
Source:The Hollywood Reporter

Iron Man's Robert Downey Jr. is in negotiations to star in DreamWorks/Universal's Cowboys & Aliens, a pulpy mix of the sci-fi and Western genres that could serve as a potential 2010 tentpole, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Imagine Entertainment partners Brian Grazer and Ron Howard are producing. Platinum Studios chairman and CEO Scott Mitchell Rosenberg also will produce, along with DreamWorks mainstays Steven Spielberg, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Ervin Rustemagic and Rich Marincic will co-produce.

Cowboys & Aliens derives from a graphic novel written by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley from an original idea by Rosenberg. The story centers on an Old West battle between the Apache and Western settlers, including a former Union Army gunslinger named Zeke Jackson (Downey), that is interrupted by a spaceship crashing into the prairie near Silver City, Ariz.

The story draws a parallel between the American imperialist drive to conquer the "savage" Indians with its advanced technology and the aliens' assault on Earthlings, who must join together to survive the invaders' attack.

The latest draft of the script was done by Iron Man and Children of Men writers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus.

That's cool........but where's all the news about Ironman 2?!

Posted by: Mad-Max on June 16, 2008 at 02:52:49

Sounds cool. Robert Downy Jr. is the man. He is the only reason I'm going to see Tropic Thunder and I hope that Iron Man 2 is bigger and better.

rdj is such a great actor he really deserves all the continued success he gets. and hell yeah i saw a preview of tropic thunder and hes too freakng funny as a white/black guy i mean hes so funny in it that he was funnier than his co-stars jack black and ben stiller and i found myself actually full blown laughing at just the preview of the tropic thunder movie. thats a minor miracle in itself i never laugh at just a preview of any movie. oh and hey steven the comic book artist if you are out there please email me at, anthonypepperoni421@yahoo.com i need some comic artist related advice from one to another. but anyway yeah robert downey jr. is the man!!!! great actor who has much much talent....

i too cant wait for iron man 2, especially when they deal with his drinking problem..also def gonna see tropic thunder after i saw the trailer during hulk

Hmm..with Iron Man II locked for a late April 2010 release ( and to start shooting next March), I wonder when the hell the man'll find the time to shoot, let alone sleep. And I thought he'd be busy just juggling IM2 and The Avengers with the potential for a few smaller films, let alone another major one.

soo no one really cares to discuss Cowboys and Aliens? just RDJ and Iron Man? has anybody read it or have any input? i mean, i love RDJ as much as the next guy, but fo' reals...

Posted by: horrorshow on June 16, 2008 at 09:41:54

i cant believe they played a trailer for tropic thunder during hulk....didnt that take you out of the movie a tad?

Posted by: Metal Mike on June 16, 2008 at 11:08:36

As long as RDJ keeps playing Tony Stark, then everything will be good.

Robert Downey SUCKS!

What are the chances of this following in the footsteps of Firefly as a sci-fi western?

Posted by: iam on June 16, 2008 at 20:10:56

as long as it doesnt interfere with iron man 2 or avengers

Posted by: adamantium g on June 16, 2008 at 20:46:23

@RedWhiteandBlue

Loved Firefly. A shame it never caught on. At least we got Serenity to see what the show would have led to.

This however, sounds more like independance day in the old west. A bit alegorical. Look forward to the preview, as it sounds like something that could be really good.

A few years back I received a copy of Cowboys & Aliens as a promotional giveaway. I absolutley loved it! Gave it to my brother to read and I still haven't seen it back. I'm anxious to see what they can do with this property.

Children of Men was a serious movie. Iron-Man was awesome. You put the guys who penned those movies together and add RDJ, and what do you have? A hit movie.

Everyone says the book was great. I just wish I could get my hands on one before the movie comes out. Anyone know where to start looking?

Posted by: Bl4d3 on June 18, 2008 at 08:58:17

Some pretty big names backing the production, I say this could be seriously awesome and a potential trilogy franchise! Yes, hope it doesn't affect RDJ's Marvel projects!

Guess what folks . . .

I just got word from an EXTREMELY reliable source (they work at Marvel Studios) that Jason Statham is now the front runner to play Captain America.

It seems that they were talking to Neal McDonough, but for whatever reason are now very close to signing Statham as the star spangled avenger.

I guess we'll see how things pan out.

Look on your email, man. I sent one to you yesterday evening. It went through on my end, have a look.

Take it easy.

To: B. Trask

Hey, Trask! Hope all is good in your hood!!! As for how you can find a copy of Cowboys & Aliens, I'd say go to the Top Cow Productions website and look there. From what I remember, it was in their section of the Diamond Previews catalogue and was produced by Platinum Studios.

Hope that helps you out, man!

---Later!

Awesome, dude. I was hoping you'd show up with some info! I'm heading over there right now. Oh, and MSN just reported on RDJ's possible involvement with Cowboys and Aliens. If this movie gets made, it's going to be huge!

Later!

Hopefully the movie will be better than the comic. The comic was a little on the lame side.

Posted by: ike on June 19, 2008 at 11:59:03

For those of you who haven't read the book, it really isn't very good. It was published by a company whose sole purpose is to creat media properties. The story was weak and predictible, but I will say that the art was pretty good.

But, to each their own. It's just my opinion. If anyone wants a copy you can have mine. I haven't touched it sinse I got a free copy at my LCS.
