Shellhead Soars Over Speed Racer!
Source:Box Office Mojo
May 12, 2008

Marvel Studios' debut production Iron Man (Paramount) has held its place on top with an impressive second weekend estimated take of $50.5 million, down just 49% from its breakout opening weekend. This is the second best hold for a movie based on a Marvel Comics character after Spider-Man six years ago, compared to previous Marvel-based films that have faced second weekend drops of 52% or more. With a total gross of $177 million, Iron Man is already on the outskirts of becoming one of the top 10 superhero movies ever after just 10 and a half days.

It was already thought that the Wachowski Brothers' Speed Racer starring Emile Hirsch and Matthew Fox, would have to settle for second place this weekend, but who knew that it would do so poorly that it barely held its ground with a mere $200 thousand lead over the Ashton Kutcher/Cameron Diaz comedy vehicle What Happens in Vegas (20th Century Fox)? It may be too close a race to call, but Warner Bros. has claimed second place with an estimated $20.2 million in 3,606, a disappointing opening compared to the movie's rumored $120 million production budget.

Not planing on goin to Speed Racer, rather go back to see Iron Man

I knew Speed racer would do poorly..it was just too cartoony for adults and Hollywood must remember that it is adults that take their kids to the movies...It was also Way to busy and colorful for kids (even kids who love cars) to enjoy. I respect creativity, but they should have seen that this was just too much for anyone to bare. As For Iron man...the sht was as tight as a movie could be (especially a comic based movie)and deserves all the praise (and mmoney) it is getting.

Speed racer sucks, and Iron Man was fu**ing amazing, so this shouldn't surprise anyone

Posted by: Jay on May 11, 2008 at 14:37:51

I waited til' this weekend to go see it, so 16 bucks of that is mine (paid for a friends ticket) :P

Go Speed Racer GOOOooooo...away. That movie looks like an epileptic fit waiting to happen with all those flashing lights and crap. Did the W brothers really think that movie was going to kill at the box orifice? I thought it looked stupid from the first trailer! That movie would have done better straight to DVD and the Wachowski brothers should get out of film-making. Are they taking acid when they think up crap like this?

Iron Man, however, was the first of what will hopefully be a long line of kick-azz movies from Marvel. I'm stoked for Iron Man II, Captain America, Thor, Hulk (hopefully, god please) and The Avengers.

I really liked Speed Racer. It was fun and wild. Cool visuals.

i just finished reading the Ultimates where nick fury and some of the other team members (its a version of the Avengers for those who don't know) and they are talking about who would play them if a movie was made of the team....And Nick said "only one person could play me...Mr. Samuel L Jackson" I loved that especially since that was way back in 2001 i believe.

Doesn't surprise me. Though I disagree with one of you other posters, Iron Man doesn't deserve all the praise it's getting. It's a better built Marvel movie and enjoyable but it was far from perfect. RDJ was mostly responsible for making it enjoyable.

It's funny, Speed Racer was total visual rape........ awesome cg, crappy story.

Posted by: JETT1 on May 11, 2008 at 15:30:39

I saw Speed Racer yesterday and they did a good job catching the whole atmosphere of the cartoon thingy....But I also went back to see Iron Man again today and the theater was packed as if it just came out today!!......go figure. Iron Man is already a classic flick baby!!!

Posted by: FanBoiiiii on May 11, 2008 at 15:43:41

yeah, GO MARVEL! I will definitely go watch Iron Man again. I will give you my monies so you can my THOR and the Avengers movie. I can't wait for the THOR movie. THOR GOD OF THUNDER!

Posted by: Multiwizard on May 11, 2008 at 15:52:22

Yo, **** Peter Johnson...

Is there something wrong with you?
Why don't you just go back to whatever porn forum you crawled out of. If you feel the need to post here, stick to topic...

By the way, congrats to Jon, RDJ, and the rest of the Iron Man bunch for a second great week at the box-office. I haven't seen Speed Racer. I'm still not sure if I will.

Posted by: mrgoodmoral on May 11, 2008 at 15:54:44

That's all Speed Racer made? Holy crud! I knew it was not going to do as well as Iron Man, and I have no interest in seeing it, but even I thought it would make it to around $80 million. Man, this is looking to be the biggest flop ever since that Ben Affleck and Jen Lopez movie. At this rate, this movie alone could single handedly label this summer as a bust. The only hope for this summer now is The Dark Knight, and with this big of a dissapointment, I doubt Batman can save this summer season from a major disspointment, even if it makes +$100 millions on opening weekend.

Good job Wachowski Brothers! You wanted to make a stunning movie, and well, you've stunned us alright, but not the way you were hoping.

FIRST!!!! YA!!!! I'M ....oh wait...

Posted by: The Last One on May 11, 2008 at 16:00:13

Was this really any surprise?! Who was really excited to see Speed Racer? Who would go unless they had kids? And why would today's kids want to see it?

Posted by: Danny on May 11, 2008 at 16:07:05

Geez. Based on the estimates I'd say half of you saying it sucked haven't even seen it. Honestly I had more fun seeing Speed Racer then Iron Man. Iron Man was good but the sheer amount of band wagon jumpers have made it out to be freakin Citizen Kane.

Posted by: The Last One on May 11, 2008 at 16:14:39

Why would people be "bandwagon jumpers" if they want to see a fun movie?
