Miller in Talks to Direct Hard Boiled
Source:MTV
April 21, 2008

Frank Miller (Sin City, upcoming The Spirit) tells MTV that he is in talks to direct an adaptation of his and Geof Darrow's comic, Hard Boiled, about an insurance investigator-turned-cyborg assassin. Back in 2001, it was announced that Warner Bros. was in talks with Miller and Darrow to write the feature film, that was to be directed by David Fincher with Nicholas Cage starring.

Check out Miller's comments on this here.

i'm gonna say it:
IT'S GONNA LOOK JUST LIKE 'SIN CITY'.
okay, close the thread.

big man, sin city and the spirit both combine b&w and color. the spirit's tie, that yellow bastard: get your facts straight before you contradict someone. you don't even know if i was satirizing th point of view you criticize me for having. don't be so freaking gullible.

same to you johnichi

could someone please fix the message order?

Despite his perhaps poorly chosen moniker, I'm with Fartacus on this one. Miller is clearly good at doing black-and-white, green-screen stuff (the teaser for Spirit WAS pretty cool), but besides that, the guy has no experience making any other kind of movie- therefore, it isn't entirely unreasonable to assume that his next flick will also look like Sin City.

Then again, if he proves me wrong, more power to him. I just hope he's willing to expand his cinematic horizons...

Posted by: bigmanpacetke on April 21, 2008 at 18:04:54

if it does how can you blame him fartacus, he's Frank Miller, he drew Sin City, the movie was based on his art work. If he sees the world in his art style then why the hell are you and everyone else suprised that Miller is making movies in that style? It's his damn style. Oh and "The Spirit" isn't in black and white like "Sin City", it's in color, except for shadowy areas where certain colors are highlited. So now that i said that, close the thread, and get off of Frank's nutz.

Since when did Frank Miller become a hack that can only do Sin City style movies to all the fanboys?

Stop judging his directorial style just because what little we've seen of The Spirit resembles Sin City in only the tiniest way (similar colors and that's pretty much it).

Go actually read Hard Boiled before jumping to a stupid conclusion.

Posted by: Kyle on April 21, 2008 at 18:45:24

WHAT!?!?

Here's the deal. Frank Miller drew Sin City in a style that is purely Frank Miller. He co-directed the movie that was based purely on that style, which is purely Frank Miller. Perhaps if Miller had the opportunity to do a Spirit comic, he would have done it in that same style. Said opportunity never came Miller's way, but what did? A film. Then why not apply his trademark aesthetic to the Spirit through the medium of film, rather than graphic novel? Brilliant!

People who complain that it looks like Sin City are equally, if not more retarded than the people that sued John Fogerty for sounding like CCR -- in a sense, for sounding like John Fogerty.

Hard Boiled on the other hand, was illustrated by Frank Miller, but looks nothing like Sin City. Ergo it's likely that neither will his movie (think 300). Miller probably always envisioned his take on the Spirit being done in a seedy, dark fashion like his Sin City masterpiece. Hard Boiled on the other hand has already been realized by Miller through one medium, and given his propensity for adapting his drawing style to film, it's safe to say that his Hard Boiled film will resemble his Hard Boiled art.

See? Now that doesn't make sense? Idiots...

I don't know, y'all. When I saw the trailer to The Spirit, the first thing I thought about was Sin City.

I get it that Frank Miller is making movies that reflect his artistic style, but there are other ways to capture your style. For example, Steven Spielberg has a distinctive style, but Jurassic Park doesn't look like Saving Private Ryan, and Saving Private Ryan doesn't look like War of the Worlds (I could go on, but you get it).

When you make movies, you have to switch it up a bit. 300 is a Miller property, but it doesn't look like Sin City. All I'm saying is that if Frank doesn't change up the design of his movies, he'll be in danger of seeming like a "one trick pony." And that's definitely a hole he doesn't want to fall in.

As long as its not a remake of John Woo's Hard Boiled.

I have one thing and one thing only to say about this:

MAKE IT ANIMATED. While my love for Frank Miller knows no bounds, that story was just as much about Geoff Darrow. It'd be the only way to do him justice.

Posted by: Wolfrankula on April 21, 2008 at 19:27:42

Just a correction about Hard Boiled - Miller wrote it but it was illustrated by Geoff Darrow, who also collaborated with Frank on Big Guy & Rusty the Boy Robot, which would also make an AWESOME live action movie.

Posted by: Name on April 21, 2008 at 19:28:06

Yeah, this is nice and all but I don't give a crap about some Insurance Salesman-Turned Cyborg Sin City lookalike. I was my Sin City 2 mother****er! It's been in production for 3 years now, and not one ****ing scene has been shot. Stop making movies about comics nobody's read and give us what we all want.

Posted by: JohnnyQ on April 21, 2008 at 19:31:20

Yeah! **** this ****! Sin City 2 all the way!

Posted by: Hexadex on April 21, 2008 at 19:41:39

I agree with Name on the issue of Hard-Boiled. It's really not even relevent, a long forgotten artifact of the 90s. Whereas Sin City is a recent cult hit that gave the graphic novel more fans than ever. To the fans, this is a HUGE slap in the face, because Sin City 2 should have been a priority. Instead now we have 2 films the much awaited sequel has to take a backseat to including a Sin City lookalike (which Spirit fans should be upset aswell).

Posted by: supersnazz on April 21, 2008 at 21:05:33

I don't see anything that suggests that Sin City 2 will be taking a back seat to this... "in talks" does not mean "in production". Certainly it could happen that way, but it's not even remotely a sure thing.

That said... I feel like any director looking to expand his artistic horizons would rather do a new film than a sequel. And if people were expecting Miller to rush to do the project that fans are clamoring for (SC2) instead of what he feels like doing, they haven't really paid that much attention to Miller's career in general.

FIRST of all, my name is awesome. i probably won't even keep it because of all the giggling, screeching interweb psychos who'll clone me while rolling around in their feces, though it would be also quite awesome to imagine said whiney losers stepping up and saying "no, I'M fartacus!" in turn.
now, i'll say this again: i don't really believe that 'the spirit' or 'hard boiled' for that matter will be 'sin city' knock offs. i was pre-emptively all the geeks from the other threads who i expected to show up here and sing their same dreary song again.
we've seen a dkr animation in btas, and the aforementioned 'rusty the boy robot'. even though frank has john byrne disease and to some extent gives everybody he draws the same face, he can handle different styles. i don't have any opinion about what he'll do in the future, or even any judgment to make on what he's done so far. all i know is, however people criticize him, he's one of the most interesting guys in the field right now, as far as i'm concerned. there, i hope that settles any confusion about what i think. everyone should be able to sleep, now.

haha fartacus is right though.

Although it may not end up lookining like Sin City, he sure as hell didn't try anything new with the Spirit (if the teaser is anything like it).

Oh, and dumbasses, it wasn't his idea to direct Sin City. it was Rodriguez's. and it was Rodriguez's idea to make it black and white with some splashes of color like the comic. Some of the comics didn't even have any color in them.

I'll say it. Frank Miller is NOT GOOD ANYMORE. He was. he was really good. Now he isn't. Not at writing, not at directing and not even that good at story telling. All he can do is re-hash his own s***.

I just can't get excited for Sin City 2, oh wait, sorry, "The Spirit".

I bet I get more ass than fartacus.

Wow you guys are pathetic.
WHAT IS THE ONE THING WE STRIVE FOR??

The movie to look like the comic book!! With a green screen it almost feels like we go from scene to scene as smoothly as turning the page in a comic book. And for god sakes the only thing Frank Miller has done wrong was write that Batman and Robin Allstars thing.

THE MAN HAS DIRECTED ONE MOVIE. WE FINALLY GET A GUY WHO WILL NOT MESS UP THE STORY and this is how we react. Its the teaser.
ITS THE TEASER for god sakes. Yes it looks the same, but its just the teaser...

atleast it isn't Wanted

thx is correct miller is washed up, yesterdays news, stale fish take your pick :)

Posted by: brandon on April 22, 2008 at 00:38:42

yeah why is everyone dissing on Miller...it's his style of directing and writing as well as art.

I don't hear you complaining about George Lucas and Star Wars run. You guys are a bunch of sissy's who probably don't have a life. LOL. get over it.

Posted by: Dr. Doak on April 22, 2008 at 01:25:41

Well brandon, this is not a George Lucas and Star Wars thread. Direct us to that one and we'll complain about him. Until then, we'll complain about Frank Miller and relevant issues.

YES!!!!!

Love Hard Boiled. Geoff Darrow did such a cool job on that thing. Hopefully he'll do production art for the flick. A bunch of people are ranting over the look of The Spirit. Yeah, the teaser looks like Sin City, but I'll still see it. What a lot of people don't know is that Will Eisner had always wanted to do a Spirit story in that style ever since he saw the way Miller utilized the visual style, but, alas he never got the chance. By the way, Frank Miller didn't create the black, white, and red (or other isolated color) technique. It was around way before the first Sin City yarn to do so in the early to mid 90s (The Babe Wore Red) in both comics and films---A 1986 or 87 issue of Superman (the cover of a demonic Supes in an alley), an 86 Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-man cover that was part of the Death of Jean DeWolf storyline, a scene from Schindler's List featuring a little girl with a red balloon, a scene in a petshop between Mickey Rourke and Matt Dillon in an early 80s Francis Ford Coppella film called Rumble Fish (the entire movie was in black and white, save for the color fish in the fishtank of the aforementioned petstore), and many, many pop art images from the 1960s that you can see in most art history books, to name a few. It's just that Miller is the most famous for utilizing this style today. Let's not forget that before Eisner died (January '05 and Sin City premiered on April 1st of the same year. Eisner, a longtime friend and mentor to Miller, was privy to Miller co-directing Sin City), there was already talk of a Spirit movie
and Eisner was said to have WANTED Miller to direct his character in the same style (how can anyone argue with the creator...especially now that he's gone).
In any case, I'll see The Spirit with an open mind. I love the idea of Hard Boiled as a film.
I've always wanted to see that happen. I would love to see a Big Guy And Rusty The Boy Robot movie. And don't get me started on Give Me Liberty (Jada Pinkette Smith as Martha Washington?)!!! I just hope that Warner Bros. doesn't screw up the Ronin movie. The guy that did Stomp The Yard is directing that. I'll reserve judgement on that and the other flicks until I see them.

---Later!

ok ive read the post and all ive got to say is so what if frank decided to make the spirit and his next movie black and white no ones ever given Tarintino **** about the way he directs films sure all the storys are diffrent in his films but there all made exactly the same way. same goes for Michael Bay if you watch his films all have exactly the same low shots of the heros standing up i.e. bad boys 2, the rock, transformers the list goes on.

personally i cant wait for Frank to show us how he directs i know hes credited for Sin City but Robert Rodriguez did do 90% of it.
