Jackman and Guggenheim Creating Nowhere Man
Source:Variety
March 25, 2008

Hugh Jackman (upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and "Eli Stone" co-creator Marc Guggenheim are teaming with Virgin Comics to create "Nowhere Man," an original comic book series that is designed to be transferred to the big screen as a Jackman vehicle.

Variety says the story was being kept under wraps, but Jackson's Seed Productions partner John Palermo said it features a protagonist reminiscent of the one Will Smith played in I Am Legend. The concept is a futuristic world where mankind has traded privacy for safety, a premise that sprouted with Seed, Virgin CEO Sharad Devarajan and chief creative officer Gotham Chopra.

"This is our first comic, and we feel the concept is transferable to other arenas, perhaps first as a video game, and then a movie," Palermo said.

Said Jackman: "I've had so much fun in the graphic novel world with the 'X-Men' franchise that I wanted to get even more involved. I'm excited to work with Virgin and Marc and create a compelling character and story that hopefully will also make it to the big screen."

"Nowhere Man" will be published under the Virgin Voices line.

It's interesting how one of the more well-known Wolverine writers & Jackman are teaming up on this...

More interesting is the amount of clout Jackman is building-up... more power to him.

Do I need to say 1st?

Said Jackman: "I've had so much fun in the graphic novel world with the 'X-Men' franchise that I wanted to get even more involved."

Said I: "Don't! Actors should keep themselves in acting. Leave the story to writers! When (succesful and rich) actors get more involved, it will be his ego talking, instead of creativity. Just don't."

I say let's give him a chance. He may surprise you. Let's not past judgement until the facts are set before us. Think about it...how people have tried to expand to a different medium and had success. Just my opinion.

Exactly, FireFly's Enigma. Well said.

Posted by: redhollywood on March 25, 2008 at 04:00:40

I agree that we should give him a chance but it's obvious that the real reason they are writing this comic is to transfer it to other mediums i.e. video games and movies. Where does that leave us? It leaves us with rehased mediocre ideas put to print solely for the almighty dollar, but then again it could be great. Who can tell?

Okay, let's.

We'll have a good example coming soon, anyway. Edward Norton is (re)writing The Hulk for his own role. Will it be good, or will it sukk? I'd say it will sukk big time. Let's hope I'm wrong. The first Hulk was already a failure. I hate to see the reboot version to fail as well.

Posted by: redhollywood on March 25, 2008 at 04:17:24

i like edward norton as an actor but if people are looking for depth in their movies the incredible hulk is not where to find it. It should be pure action and HULK SMASH! and all that. At least the hulk looks a lot better than he did in ang lee's version

Okay, wait a minute. Spider and redhollywood, are you guys saying that actors should only act and do nothing else? What if their primary talent is writing? Guys like Edward Norton and Ethan Hawke have proved that you don't have to "just be" anything. It's extremely shortsided of you to say that a project is going to "sukk" just because an actor takes lead in a project.

I personally think Jackman did a good job as Wolverine in the X-Men franchise (good not great). But I like the guy, he comes across as a decent bloke, and I am glad that he has decided to stick with the Wolverine character, a lot of other actors tend to get a bit precious about this sort of thing.

Whether or not this 'new' idea of his will be any good, who knows, all we have a the moment is a title, and so co creators, bit early to judge I reckon.

Not the first time an actor has announced his desire to get more involved in the comics medium however, didn't Thomas Jane do pretty much the same thing after the Punisher?

And we all now how well that didn't turn it, so much so he left the franchise after spending best part of a year telling anyone who would listen how much he loved the character and wanted to do it again.

Frankly I think the new punisher well be awful just looking at the few pics that have emerged.

As for the Ed Norton Hulk, I am a huge HULK fan, and I am also a fan of Norton and was amazed he got involved with this, I was even more amazed when I heard how involved he is with the movie, so I am hoping it delivers on lots of levels.

Not sure about the guy playing Doc Samson mind, can't see how they are going to transform him if they make the mooted trilogy.

Concentrate on making a good comic. That should be all they are worried about. Because Virgin Comics suck ass.

"...Virgin CEO Sharad Devarajan and chief creative officer Gotham Chopra."

Gotham Chopra? That's a kinda cool name.

ROCK ON!!!!

Posted by: WHAT??? on March 25, 2008 at 06:59:33

i think its a cool idea. there is nothing wrong with trying to create something new. who care if hes an actor? as for the Ed Norton comments. are you kidding?? that movie is going to rock!!! no doubt about it.

Posted by: RAOK on March 25, 2008 at 07:30:59

Hey gang... it's called the benefit of the doubt. Don't slam the guy just because he's an action actor who wants to take a creative shot at this. Look at Clint Eastwood, essentially an action actor who had evolved into one of the best writer /directors working today. Ditto Mel Gibson, went from Mad Max to creating great Hollywood films. I know that many people who visit this site feel that comics and/or graphic novels are their exclusive arena and only experts like themselves can ordain who should work in them. Give the guy a break...sure it's business, but he has become immersed in this world and wants to create something. So let him try and don't hang him on it before you see the result.

As Heath Ledger says in the Dark Knight, "Why so serious?"

Hmmm. Not too sure how I feel about creating a product for the express purpose of spinning it into a game and movie. It feels like they're putting the cart before the horse to me.

And Gotham Chopra. Maybe I'm a just a suspicious bastard, but I find it odd that he changed his name from Gautama to Gotham about the same time he launched Virgin Comics. It comes across as a little too "Notice me! I run a comics company and my name evokes one of the most recognizable characters ever!" to a be coincidence in my mind.

Though I have to admit, "Gotham" is a pretty cool name, so points for that.

I think this may be epic.
Remember when Clint Eastwood decided to do things other than acting? Yeah, it was amazing, just because someone is an actor, it doesn't mean they have no other talents, this could be great, or it could suck, but it's not Jackman's fault if it does.
i don't like making it just so it could be a movie, though, it may be less fantastical. The Hulk, and Spiderman, and Batman, and definately Superman were not created to be movies, they were created to be comics. I think it won't be as great if the entire time they are writing, they're like " We can put this in the movie, and we can't put that, so let's not add it."

Sounds like a marketing trick to me... Maybe he'll give a few ideas at the beginning, and then just leave his name attached to the comic...
Soon, comics Co-created by Paris Hilton or Michael Jackson...

Yey, 21st comment.

Spider; If your reasoning holds up, Rocky should've been a monumental failure. Sly wrote that movie with himself in mind for the title character. Since he wrote the character himself, he had a deeper understanding of how Rocky works, what makes him tick. Things he didn't have to put down on paper. I think that made it a lot easier for him to convey certain emotions to the screen. Jackman can and hopefully will do the same. :)

i hope jackman will play spider-man in this one.

How involved was Jackman in Van Helsing?

Posted by: Full of Questions on March 25, 2008 at 17:31:35

Sounds like it could be the next Bladerunner

Posted by: redhollywood on March 25, 2008 at 22:24:43

I wan't blasting actors for writing. I was just saying that the only reason they are making the comic is to transfer it to other mediums. In other words it is just a marketing ploy. Having Jackman associated with it gives it that star power.
