Thor, Captain America and Avengers Updates

Marvel Entertainment reported its First Quarter earnings today and gave a few updates on its upcoming movies during the company's quarterly conference call.

Iron Man 2 is, of course, already filming for a May 7, 2010 release, but Marvel said this morning that the Kenneth Branagh-directed Thor is scheduled to start filming in the First Quarter of 2010. No formal offers have been made to actors, though they said that casting announcements are likely the next few months. Thor is targeted for a May 20, 2011 release.

Marvel added that The First Avenger: Captain America, to be directed by Joe Johnston, is scheduled to start filming in the summer of 2010 for a July 22, 2011 release.

In an interview with Empire magazine, Marvel's President of Production Kevin Feige talked about The Avengers as well:

"Zak Penn is already on board The Avengers [as writer] and he's spending a lot of his time looking into what we're doing with Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, seeing how we're tying it all together. And he's beginning to outline the script now – he'll be doing that over the summer."

The Avengers is coming to theaters on May 4, 2012.

...and is it just me, or does Zak Penn have the greatest gig in the world?

Posted by: essay on May 5, 2009 at 11:15:08

So the Hulk will be included as well in the Avengers?

HOLY ****!!! 2011 is gonna be a GREAT year for Marvel!!!

Posted by: the_ddb on May 5, 2009 at 11:32:18

zak penn's really only done a couple of good movies. i know that edward norton did a rewrite on the incredible hulk and there's only x2 that was any good amongst last stand, fantastic four, and elektra..

I'm somewhat relieved that Marvel is in charge of these movies and not Fox. What a hatchet job they did on Wolverine Origins. The Cap movie better be treated with massive respect to his origin, and patriotism. The costume is not a sticking point for me, so long as the shield is there. I still like the Ultimate Cap version of the character with his WWII costume and modern costume for modern times, but I digress. Here's to a good trio of movies: Cap, Iron Man 2 and the Avengers, because we all know that Thor movie will be shaky and full of CGI. Too bad they can't swap out Hawkeye for Thor in the Avengers movie.

When will we get the Ant-Man movie!?!

Posted by: jim on May 5, 2009 at 11:36:27

i'm really worried about the fact that Penn is writing the Avengers.I can't say i enjoyed most of the superhero movies he wrote.I mean he wrote Elektra....but anyway i hope everything turns out good.

I think they'll delay Avengers even a couple of years more, just to do the sequels to the more successfull Marvel films.

@ Maul Rats

With Kenneth Branagh at the helm, Thor should be pretty good. I don't even care about Thor (the character), but I'm excited by the direction the movie is already taking.

It's so funny to see that DC can't seem to get their act together except animated films. Don't get me wrong. They are top notch, it's just that we should already have a Flash, Green Arrow, and Green Lantern movie. They would make a killing. I have a feeling that it's Warner Bros. that's screwing it all up.

They better include the Hulk, he is one of the founding members of the Avengers. Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Wasp and GiantMan (AntMan) or whatever Henry Pym decides to be, are the main Avengers. They should go up against Kang or a mixture of villains, Loki, Mandarin, etc... and have them fight Hawkeye before he decides to fight with the Avengers instead of against them. For the next Avengers Movie they should introduce Wonderman, Vision and Ultron, with Ultron being the major villain in the story. I do not know if Marvel Studios would be able to include the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver since they are properties of X-Men and under Fox studio control. So until Marvel Studios can get back all their characters we will not be able to see a New Avengers Movie with Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man, Captain America and so forth. This movie will still be awesome.

I hope Marvel picks Jason Lewis to play Cap..and if they bring back Edward Norton its a slam dunk.

Posted by: Marvel Rules!!! on May 5, 2009 at 11:57:22

I can't wait to find out who they pick to play Captain America & Thor.

Posted by: Scarehuman on May 5, 2009 at 11:58:09

I agree that Captain America needs to be a very patriotic film, as Steve Rogers is supposed to represent the best of this country.

I am very excited about Thor. I have never been a great fan of the comic, but I am a great fan of Norse mythology in general and Kenneth Branagh is a great filmaker, whom I know will pay sufficient homage to the comic while giving us an amazing Norse movie. I have every confidence in him. Iron Man I am excited for as well, just kind of sad we're not getting another Hulk before the Avengers.

I don't know, is Zack Penn a good choice to write the Avengers?
Is IMDB credits for superhero movies are
Fantastic 4..failed
Electra....failed
and X3...failed

the only decent one he wrote was Incredible Hulk, which I liked. But the last three were consistently terrible. Kind of scary...
I guess I feel like the Avengers would be such a big movie that it should have multiple writers collaborating

Posted by: ayenlou on May 5, 2009 at 12:09:27

I kinda hesitant on having Zak Penn script the Avengers movie...

Fantastic 4, Electra, X3... Fail...

The only reason why Hulk was good do the script rewrites of Norton.

Drop the frivolous "First Avenger" over title from the Captain America movie, and we're in good shape!

Seriously, what's wrong with just calling it "Captain America?"

Posted by: marantaz on May 5, 2009 at 12:16:06

The only good thing about Zack Penn writing anything is that he's used to being rewritten... he just collects his pay and moves on with no complaints.

Dude I want some Antman News ASAP!

Posted by: severedtrev on May 5, 2009 at 12:17:38

They should get the guy who played The Spirit to be Captain America....he would be perfect
