James McTeigue on Making a DC Superhero Movie
Source:ComingSoon.net, Edward Douglas
November 21, 2009

A few years ago, director James McTeigue helmed an adaptation of Alan Moore and David Lloyd's V For Vendetta and in recent months, there's been talk of Warner Bros. maybe getting him to tackle one of their DC superheroes.

When ComingSoon.net recently spoke to him about his new movie Ninja Assassin which opens next Wednesday, November 25, we did broach the subject, and while he was non-committal about even preferring to work with one DC character over another, he did share some interesting thoughts on the subject of superhero movies:

ComingSoon.net: Over the last few months, there've been rumors about you being in talks with Warner Bros. about doing some superhero stuff. Is that something you've been seriously considering or would that not be possible if you do those other movies?
James McTeigue: I don't know. I guess the thing with filmmaking is that you always have things in development and until you're actually standing on the set and there's film running through the camera or you're committing something to a harddrive, I think the possibilities are always there. They're so temporal sometimes, so yeah, I'd love to keep working with Warner Bros. We have a good relationship, and they let me make interesting films, so hopefully... you know, they've got the DC characters.

CS: Are there any you'd be interested in? "V For Vendetta" was based on a DC graphic novel (sort of) but it wasn't superheroes and it was outside that world, it was its own thing. But a movie based on one of DC's superheroes would involve a lot more history.
McTeigue: Yeah, it's funny with the comic book genre. It used to obviously be the subculture but now it is the culture, so I keep wondering whether there's going to be some sort of critical mass reached with the comic book genre. I'd love to pick another one. It's kind of like trying to find the right one, but there's plenty out there.

CS: I guess what's happening after last year with "Iron Man" and "The Dark Knight," everyone is waiting to see what the next big comic book movie is going to be. Those were so good that it created a watermark that will be hard for anything after that.
McTeigue: Yeah, the point where a comic book hero makes a billion bucks at the box office, you go, "Yeah, so it's definitely not a subculture anymore." There's a lot of people willing to see those movies, but yeah, I dunno, there's always something interesting coming out, like "Sucker Punch," I think that will be a good one. I guess Matthew Vaughn is making one, "Kick-Ass"?

I wonder what he would be working on? "Flash?" "Wonder Woman?" Maybe "Superman" or "Green Arrow?"

I think it goes without saying it will not be "Green Lantern" or "Batman."

I'd like to see him do the Flash. Kinda broaden his style a bit. I know he could make it look good though. With him, he just needs the right script.

I don't know, but I really need a Captain Marvel Movie. This movie has a lot of potential.
Hope this happens soon.

Who cares? Other than Batman, DC sucks!!!

Posted by: smash adams on November 21, 2009 at 17:10:53

just let the guy have superman. it'll be action oriented and he seems to have a story in his head. dc doesn't suck. the powers that be just don't know how to make them faithful and entertaining, other than batman.

theMerch424 sucks.

Either way, The Flash or Superman.

I say get him to direct a Smallville trilogy. Give us the Superman films we've been waiting for, dammit!

Posted by: Timstuff on November 21, 2009 at 19:05:03

Superman, Flash, and Wonder Woman all need to get their due props in film form. I'm not sure McTeague is the right guy for Superman since he said he wouldn't want to do an origin (and the next Superman NEEDS to be a reboot), but I think The Flash and especially Wonder Woman could potentially be great fits for him. We shall see!

I'd say skip Superman...Its been done enough. I'd like to see a Flash movie, but I think McTeigue would be better off doing a movie that could be altered from the mythology like a Blue Beetle or Black Lighting. Even better, do a villain movie on Deathstroke!

MARTIAN MANHUNTER!!!

Make it a mystery film.

Have the J'onn be several different characters but you know quite know which one.

@Timstuff

"I'm not sure McTeague is the right guy for Superman since he said he wouldn't want to do an origin"

Do you pay attention? They have lost the rights to the origin. Reboot or not it's off the table.

Posted by: mojojackson on November 21, 2009 at 20:31:27

grow-up:

Well, an origin story in a reboot wouldn't necessarily be off the table, it just means that the the filmmakers would have to get permission from/give compensation to creators' families.

Of course, it's yet another reason a Smallville movie would make the most sense as the next big screen Supes adaptation, since--one, the show in in either its final or penultimate season--and two, they wouldn't have to worry about touching on his origins.

I hope he does another Vertigo title. He appears to understand the feel for them.

Posted by: Man of Tommorrow on November 21, 2009 at 21:22:09

Not sure which film would be best for him but I am definatly up for more DC films!

Posted by: Lawrence on November 21, 2009 at 22:03:23

I'd say they should make "The Flash" as the next tentpole/franchise film. Hire Geoff Johns(screenplay/story), Mark Waid (script polish) and Ethan Van Sciver (storyboards) and let this James McTeigue guy direct this film. Get all the juicy stuff from the source material - DC Comics.. that'll get fanboys and mainstream moviegoers interested for sure.

Maybe the Green Arrow movie SuperMax.

Posted by: Fanboiii on November 21, 2009 at 22:24:24

The world is still waiting for a great Superman movie.

Posted by: Fletch from Georgia on November 21, 2009 at 23:29:14

Man there are some good comments on this post, great job guys. I agree with mojojackson, fanboiii and Lawerance. They could at least do one superman movie based after smallville ends. Hollywood did it with star trek TNG and it worked out ok. I guess the jla movie is still dead. Superman, wonder woman, flash, green arrow, batman all these properties are floundering right now. Of course warner and DC did just create the DC studios or whatever it was so hopefully they'll get their act together like marvel/disney has and get these movies made.

"refail"...love it...reeves-routh certainly means: re-fail...lol

Posted by: Astral Projector on November 22, 2009 at 00:55:54

@booksmart devil...thank you! TOM WELLING for Superman!!!!

Posted by: Cor on November 22, 2009 at 00:57:27

He should do The Flash. It's been on the back burner since David Goyer in 2006, Shawn Levy in 2007 and David Dobkin in 2008. Now, in 2009 all 3 directors dropped out and there is no director. The writer to the Johnny Quest film which will star Zac'F'eron wrote something for The Flash film a while ago. I believe the writer's name was Dan Mazeau. I know that WB hired comic writter Geoff Johns as acting consultant to The Flash film. The Flash is definitly needed. It says in IMDB that The Flash is scheduled for a 2011 release. It really all depends with the success of The Green Lantern, staring Ryan Reynolds and directed by Martin Campbell.

"Who cares? Other than Batman, DC sucks!!!"

Coming from someone who isn't particularly interested in either Marvel or DC, it's amazing how shallow and narrow-minded most people are. Retards who've barely touched a comic in their life make 'xxx sux!' judgements based on... absolutely nothing. Until you actually read a DC comics, just shut the hell up and keep fapping to your Robert Downey Jr poster, Merch.
