What Would McTeigue Do with a Superman Film?
August 21, 2009
MTV chatted with Ninja Assassin and V For Vendetta director James McTeigue about what he would do if he was brought on board a new Superman film. He's been rumored as one of the candidates to take over the franchise. You can watch his response using the player below!

This is BS! I wasted however long watching a trailer to DANCE FLICK just to learn I can't see the MTV feature as I don't live in USA? That BLOWS! They should at least tell me BEFORE they get my hopes up by playing something at all - argh!
But yeah, this guy would be interesting to see how he'd direct the film. Can anyone tell me what exactly he says? Can't wait for Ninja Assassin to release here, been waitin on that.

he stuttered a bit and basically said I'd reboot that superdude like a politician would avoid saying the wrong thing around election time.
and that he wouldn't show the big blue boyscouts origin since he can't anyway

I wish they would reboot! Superman needs something new! Singers movie was too soft and pointless. Would love to see superman like in the justice league unlimited. Just out there showing how powerful he is.

Nevermind, read the article...
"I think if I was ever going to go near Superman, I would do a complete reboot—take it in a direction that you would absolutely not expect, actually," McTeigue told MTV News. "So, that would be my thinking on it, if I was ever going to go near Superman."
Meh. Suddenly not so sure really. He goes on to say the origin story isn't worthwhile for a reboot, which is fair, but I'd like a TOUCH on it atleast for the reboot (even if it's 2mins), so it has a place in a potential new franchise. Does he actually understand Supes? Why Superman would feel like an outcast despite being humanity's saviour? Don't get me wrong I wouldn't expect that as an angle for the film but it'd make a notable difference to Superman's somewhat lone ranger feel.
Actually screw it, I have too many opinions and I don't think a reboot will please everyone anyway. I just hope whatever happenes with Superman, they make sure it's a damn good job!

A damn good job = a great blend of story and visuals, character depth and action, acting and tone. Mix it with close to comic-based stories with a GOOD twist.
That's all I ask.

i think they should do superman red son. everyone is familiar with superman enough that they would be blown away by this story's concept.

McTeigue, You are right my friend Superman needs to step into the modern age that we all know and love. We, have all seen his origin from when he grew up and became Daily Planet's finest Reporter and Journalist Clark Kent aka Superman. I want to see the villains step in and give Superman fights that he has experienced in the last 4 films but, on a much greater level. Brainiac and Metallo will be the first two candidates. McTeigue may get the director's chair to creating a new Superman movie this won't be a reboot as he said. I think changing some things around from Superman Returns will make it a whole new look for Superman: Man Of Steel the sequel to 2006's Superman Returns.

How the eff do you launch or relaunch a superhero franchise without even explaining where they came from? Are we just supposed to accept that Superman is there without any explanation?

well singer didn't do the origin story and nobody liked it. i dont think you need to get away from the origin to make a good superman movie. i dont think thats a big issue. i for one appreciate what singer did. for anyone that was a superman fan, i think can't not appreciate his treatment. maybe not love the movie, but should be able to appreciate what was done. the good thing about it is, it respected the original superman movie, which i think needed to be done in order to move forward. its in the perfect spot for a new movie. i wouldn't mind a reboot either. i just hope it doesn't come out looking like fantastic four, or the punisher, or any of the other cheaply poorly done superhero movies. treat it right, with respect and integrity like batman begins and the dark knight, and it will be amazing.

I think this idea of 'a direction you wouldn't expect' is silly. What we need is the classic elements of Superman that appeal to the fans; the Clark-Lois-Superman love triangle, epic battles with insanely powerful villains, and heroism in the face of a world growing darker by the day.
All this talk of bringing Superman into the modern world really gets my goat. Singer tried to do that, but he ended up screwing with elements of the myth he didn't understand. You can bring Superman into the modern world without doing that. Take Kingdom Come for example; a much darker setting and tone, but Superman remains the one beacon of hope, the one unchanging element of light in an ever darkening world.
Now I'm not saying that's the right formula for another movie, just making a point. I don't think we need a new direction, what we need is familiarity. Let the audience fall in love with these characters and this world all over again, and do that by giving them the classic elements of the mythology that have always had a universal appeal to the fans. Then think about taking it in a new direction in the sequel(s).

That would be interresting. As long as it's Brandon Routh playing Superman....

Any one of this cast would suit me.
Sam Worthington as Superman
Clive Owen as Lex Luthor
Robert De'Niro as Perry White
Amber Heard as Supergirl
Adwewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Steel
Jim Caviezel as Jor-El
Rachel Weisz as Lara-El
Eliza Dushku as Lois Lane
Gerard Butler as Zod
Jamie Bell as Jimmy Olsen
Dennis Quaid as Jonathon Kent
Michelle Pfeiffer as Martha Kent
Daniel Craig as Metallo
Andy Serkis as Mr Mxyzptlk (CGI)
I know ALL of them couldnt be included, but just one actor would be nice.

And PLEASE no more Lex Luthor/Donald Trump as the main villain, I want to see the evil business man from the comics and the cartoon, enough with the male prostitute who seduces old ladys and wants all the land for himself.
Posted by: Matt on August 21, 2009 at 04:28:23
You know what that's actually a pretty damn good line up! I'd need some convincing about Sam Worthington but the rest of them seem good choices, with the exception of Dennis Quaid as JK which is nothing short of inspired!
Posted by: Me on August 21, 2009 at 04:29:37
And Jason Isaacs would be the perfect Lex.
Show us Lexcorp and the creation of Metallo!

get off superman...as powerful as he is,, he is a corny cheeseball character...the only characters worth anything in DC comics is Batman and Green Lantern....bring on a 3rd batman film and green lantern and leave superman in the 1970s when those films were made...it was meant for an era of bad special effects...singer had all he could do with 2006 technology and he didnt do anything with superman returns in terms of visuals, action and special effects...there were like 2 action scenes of like 3 minutes each in a 150 minute long movie....singers legacy ended with x-men 2 and he chose to abandon that franchise too so its his loss.

After hearing that, I don't want this guy anywhere near Superman. I want someone who honors what is iconic and special about this character.
Posted by: CoolDude on August 21, 2009 at 04:33:07
Hahaha even lois throw more punches than superman, how pathetic is that?

Okay that so-called interview was naff and totally uninformative. But it did tell me one thing...I don't want this guy anywhere near a SUPERMAN FILM. I'm really getting tired of all these Hollywood types who think that the only way to make a "good" Superman film is by changing the very core of what makes Superman Superman.
The Man of Steel's personality is set in stone. Everything around him has changed as the book's aged and matured but the character himself has always remained the same. He's the big blue boyscout, he's righteous,
honest, and totally selfless. No matter what kind of story is eventually crafted those elements about the Man of Steel cannot be changed. To do so would diminish the character.
SUPERMAN does not need to be a "dark" film (as seems to be Warner Bros. thinking concerning all DC properties) to be good. It just need to have a tightly constructed story that is exciting, action packed, with strong characterization and a healthy respect for the Man of Steel's mythos.

Just as newsworthy:
"If I were to direct a Superman film it would be a movie with actors and probably a screenplay... probably."
