still iffy that trailer was bizarre....

Sorry, but since I saw this a little disturbing Trailer, I'm not really excited for the movie anymore. Frank Miller is really exaggerating his stylized cinematography.
Besides, all his women characters seem to whores... way of thinking outside the closet, Frank!

Frank Miller is the man. I'm glad he's finally in a position to make the type of movies he always wanted to make.
And on that note, Scarlett Johansson can get it with a FULL PAID scholarship!!! lol

Pass. I'm not interested in seeing Miller bring his kinks and fetishes to Eisner's creation. Makes me feel like I need to take a shower.
Posted by: sickened by this on July 18, 2008 at 09:55:31
This is a mess. Where's Eisner's palette and sense of style? Overblown slo-mo runs across wires? No Ebony? This isn't Sin city, The Spirit wears BLUE, not black. Eisner's women were not all sluts first and characters second. No P'Gell? Showing the Octopus? This whole thing is a messy self-congratulatory 'moment alone' for Frank Miller, not a real demonstration of Eisner's storytelling. A waste of celluloid (Yes, I know it's digital now...)

Okay, I gotta ask. How the hell can anyone guess anything about the characters from a minute and a half of footage. "All the women are whores" etc..
I think allot of people are getting ahead of themselves with the bashing considering we know next to nothing about this movie.
And I agree mostly with 'sicked by this'. The film strays way the hell away from Eisner's book. But I'm still going to see it cause it looks cool and Sam Jackson is the baddest mother %*$(er around. Can't wait to see him as an over the top bad guy.

sickened by this: I'm not so much concerned with the blue v. black suit, but I agree with all of your other points. preach it, bro.

Man... somebody shoot the marketing execs. So far it seems to me like they've advertised the fashion of the film and absolutely none of the substance. What are they selling? I don't know who's dropped the ball at this point. This could be a fantastic film, but ya can't see it through this damn flesh parade.
This stuff would be okay if the trailer/teaser/whatever had a touch of the plot in it, but it's a stripshow thus far. Don't get me wrong... Scarlet is easier on the eyes than eyelids, but so far it looks like an ad for the new fetish department in Sak's.
I wish Frank Miller the best, but where's the good stuff? Er... the OTHER good stuff.

i predict seeing this word a lot in future reviews of the movie: misogynistic.

Could it be that Frank Miller just doesn't know how to translate his vision of a story onto celluloid?
I agree with Patman, so far this has all looked like poser heaven. Like a cheesy commercial for perfume.

People, did u really expect anything more?? The Spirit is a yesterday comic about a so called cop exacting justice and revenge but always getting beat down or seduced by his femme fatales. This is Millers stand alone project after CO DIRECTING with Tarantino and Rodriguez on Sin City. Now I will agree that the trailer was DIFFERENT but in no means not a creative effort. Thos it would be nice to see a crime fighter dress out of the ususal black satin garb, lets just wait until the next 3 trailers and all the unecessary footage shown on the internet and reality shows before Eisner and Miller are crucified. Although I will have to point out that his non use of Ebony White in film wasnt the most moving reason. If hes willing to change aspects of a comic for theatrical purposes he could certainly change characatures of characters to enhance the film as well.

Also folks, keep this in mind. The film relies on a modern use of the 1940 motion picture element NOIR. The Spirit, like the Shadow is essentially a crime thriller series laced in mystery and shrouded by corruption, suspicion, seduction and deduction (how u like them apples??) Look at some of the mystery "capers" of the 40's particualry those films with Humprey Bogart or Edward G. Robinson to get an idea of what your getting yourself into. Also, look at some detective serials of the 30's and 40's to further understand the type of movie the Spirit is intended to be. And if your looking for a modern comic book detective film that was a predacessor for the spirit and others to follow, check out **** Tracy with Warren Beatty and Madonna from the 90's.

I'm gonna go see this, but I'm with the others that said after seeing the trailer, I'm not too excited anymore. I respect & admire Miller, but I wish that this didn't stylisticly resemble Sin City so much. Don't get me wrong, I thought that SC was breathtaking when I first saw it, but for The Spirit (his solo directorial debut) I would have thought he would stray a little farther than the ground already tread.
Who knows...It may surprise us all, though!
I hope it does.

Wow. Nice cleavage.

I am really tired of seeing pictures of the women in this movie. I want to see some of the SPIRIT HIMSELF. Why aren't we getting any pics of him???
Posted by: Adam on July 18, 2008 at 15:25:28
I'm still looking forward to this. I like the fact that Miller is reference Eisner in this film. Anyone who has read the spirit knows what I mean. A miniature spirit confronted by giant women is an iconic scene in the series. I was hoping for more action in the trailer, and I hope there are good shots of the city. Best part of the trailer is when eva says, "Shut up and Bleed." If that didn't resonate with you you might want to check your pants!

Darknightwatchmen, youre right. shes the main reason ima go watch it.

"Could it be that Frank Miller just doesn't know how to translate his vision of a story onto celluloid?"--JoJo
I hope not, man. Frank Miller's got the mind to bring us some awesome films of the noir/pulp variety. But so far, it seems like the marketing strategy is hiding something behind all the hot ass. I'm kinda surprised that was the first thing they decided to showcase.
I'm not bashing the film, but I just feel like they're setting off on the wrong foot. Hard to speculate whether or not Miller's style will completely eclipse Eisner's character just yet, but it does look like they've chosen to go with Miller's recent works as the focus for pitching The Spirit to us.
Addendum: Sammy L's tentacle eyeliner freaks me out a little.
