Sam Raimi Talks Spider-Man
Source:Superhero Hype!
June 5, 2008

ComingSoon.net/Superhero Hype! talked to "Spider-Man" franchise director Sam Raimi this week and got his thoughts on making more sequels.

"James Vanderbilt is writing the script and I'm excited to read it. I think it's going to be done in a few months," Raimi told us, adding, "I'm hoping it's as great as our discussions were about it and I'm hoping it feels right for me because I love Spider-Man. I'm hoping I'm well rested enough to embrace it and I'm hoping Sony wants me to do it. If all of those things come together, I would love to do it. There are a lot of unknowns about the future."

And how does he feel about re-casting key players if needed? "I'd hate to re-cast anybody in the future, I can't imagine that."

In related news, ShockTillYouDrop.com also talked to Raimi about the proposed Evil Dead remake and rumored 30 Days of Night sequel. You can read more on those here!

Meh...not excited about SP4. Not since the disastrous monstrosity that was Spider-man 3. PASS!

I second that S4e

I wish Marvel would take over the Spiderman franchise and give it a re-image similar to what they did with the Incredible Hulk film.

Spiderman 3 left a sour taste in a lot of peoples mouths!

And to be honest, Kirtsen Dunst just doesn't do it for me anymore...with those dead eyes...lol...

Posted by: superbumm on June 6, 2008 at 00:21:13

i also think spiderman 4 would suck because they ****ed up 3.

Posted by: Anonymous on June 6, 2008 at 00:23:32

I liked the first two, but it seems that Raimi has not learned when to let something go. Tobey simply isn't right for the part anymore, Kirsten was a mistake in the first place, etc., etc....

Posted by: calvan4 on June 6, 2008 at 00:24:06

Spiderman 4 will be shiiit if he directs it. he fuccked the 3rd one royally.

Dare I say it?

DARE I SAY IT?

YES! YES I DARE!

***REGWEC!!!***

YOU'RE A MORON! YOU'RE NOT EVEN FIRST! HOW PATHETIC IS *THAT*?

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSER!

honestly i think anyone who says they wont see spidey 4 after having not liked s3 is lying to themselves. i mean, i wasnt the movies biggest fan either, but the things he did in the first two movies cannot be denied. i wouldnt, however, mind some maaajor recasts. bring back some fresh blood.

Posted by: johnironman on June 6, 2008 at 00:27:24

oh they better not remake evil dead....that'll ruin it.

Posted by: johnironman on June 6, 2008 at 00:28:22

also....spider-man 4 i think might be as bad as 3 to me.

I love the Spider-Man movies. My favorite superhero franchise by far. Spidey 2 is one of the best movies I've ever seen. I'm so greatful for how well made these movies were. I love Sam Raimi. I want him to keep making Spidey movies for as long as he can.

Posted by: GoldBlade6 on June 6, 2008 at 00:28:37

I know it's hard to believe, but just because the third movie wasn't the best doesn't mean the people working on the fourth installment won't learn from their mistakes. People were so happy with the first two movies. The fourth will be a whole new movie. It's a whole new opportunity to make things right. Why should we doubt they can? Most people would agree that Spider-Man 2 was better than the first. So we hit a dip with Spider-Man 3. No reason the fourth can't or won't be better.

Posted by: nightwing1021 on June 6, 2008 at 00:29:26

I think they can redeem themselves for the fouth one. The Insidious Six would be awesome. Or introdue Carnage and do a symbiote battle with Vemon!

We seem to have pretty short memories- not so long ago S-M 2 was considered by the majority of the public, critics and US fans the best superhero movie made, then Marvel's own Avi Arad (for those who assume the company can do no wrong after just one film lately where they left a talented helmer largely alone without the same pressure they gave Raimi) and US fans forced inclusion of a certain character making the last one overcrowded.
As far as I can see- there's no better position to be in than one well established with audiences already ivested in a cast and a creative team, but a maligned last offering that can only be improved upon (particularly minus the toy-designer's influence).
A year's time and we'd be hyped as can be about a return to form from the crew.

There is absolutely NO reason to remake Evil Dead. Its beauty lies in the simplicity of its low budget personality. Hard to say if many other movies even have a personality.

Posted by: Spyder121 on June 6, 2008 at 00:42:45

Totally agree with you, Comic Artist...So many people seem to go from utter admiration and near worship to utmost hatred. Raimi has done a great job with the franchise. Yes, the third one dipped a bit, but the man is human, after all. And like you said, he was pressured into doing certain things. I think he's perfectly suited to helm 4 and beyond. Unfortunately, this group of people we seem to belong to, the so-called "fanboys," are a really fickle lot. Sometimes annoyingly so.

Wow you guys are ****in twats, so just because 3 was disappointing 4 is going to be bad and especially if Sam directs it? We haven't even seen the whole Spider-Man 3 because Sam was forced to cut it down because it was deemed too long. As is I still think Spider-Man 3 is pretty good and maybe not the best of the bunch but an enjoyable movie.

Posted by: Cerh on June 6, 2008 at 00:44:54

idk sp3 wasn't bad because directing or acting it was the writing which was not raimi or toby's fault

I've thought since the very beginning that Dunst was a bad choice and incredibly mis-cast as Mary Jane.

MJ in the comics is supposed to be a MODEL. A hot one, at that. Kirsten Dunst does not scream "hot." Hell, she doesn't even whisper "hot." They should've gone with their other candidate, Alicia Witt. You can look at her see her as a model, someone that should be on billboards and drooled over by guys but, is with Peter instead.

That was the whole point of the her famous line "Face it tiger...you just hit the jackpot." Because he was STUNNED by her beauty!!

Nothing stuns me about Kirsten Dunst and it's just more of Hollywood B.S. that they try to shove down our throats. In line with this notion is that Sarah Jessica Parker is supposed to be one of the most desired females in all of NYC. F'n please!! I could go on and on but, I think you get my point....

S-M 3 was chessy with Peter dancing down the street, dancing in the club, his dumb new look, Harry acting like a total retard from simple short-term memory loss, his butler Bernard telling him the truth only after all of the trouble that's happened, - (That was pretty implausible! Wouldn't he have just spoken up initially?!?) - , Sandman just kept repeating "My daughter's sick, I need money", plus he looked too much like The Mummy...hmm...what else?

Oh yeah, friggin' TOPHER GRACE playing the biggest bad*** villain in Spider-Man lore!!! Wow. What a tool. And what a totally horrible choice.

That's like if they got Ving Rhames to play Kojak. Wait...

That movie was serious let-down after the first 2 were pretty awesome, even if Dunst was in them.
I agree with "retronaz" on having Marvel jumping into this and fixing it the way it should be done. Not sure if that's possible with contracts, et. al. Sony might have a lock on this series.

Posted by: major bloodnok on June 6, 2008 at 00:53:42

What are you dopes talking about? After the first two movies everyone LOVED Raimi. Now because S-M3 was a turd you think he's a loser? Come on! Avi Arad forced Venom on him. Venom was a weak link in the comics and he was a weak link in the movies (though better in the movies).

If Sam Raimi makes it, I'll see it twice and buy the 2 disc dvd. Anyone else... once in the cinema. That's all.

Posted by: max_jaybo on June 6, 2008 at 00:54:32

I have my own theory on why we all disliked the third one and that was too much Mary Jane. If they hadn't have had that whole "waah, my boyfriend is more famous than me" subplot they *might* have had more time to develop Sandman and Venom as characters AND have an actual story arc for our leading hero instead of having the much advertised fight with "inner darkness" reduced to a montage of strutting and cookie stealing.

I wholly blame Kirsten for that as it seemed like the kind of compromise you begrudgingly make when a star threatens to leave your picture. And now because of one actresses' ego, the whole franchise is tainted in the eyes of fans.

But unlike you guys, I wouldn't rule out seeing a fourth Raimi-Spidey based on one misstep. Because boycotting a director for one bad movie would be ridicuous and petty.

Posted by: The ButnakedAvenger on June 6, 2008 at 00:56:28

Spidey 3 was definitely bad due to acting, as well as writing. I'm not a director so I can't say anything was wrong in that dept.. i mean.. the cameras seemed to be working fine to me.

however I can say that Raimi didn't exercise the creative control that he should have, and in that respect he screwed up by giving in.

They also went into this movie with an unfinished script and changed the whole third act halfway through filming, which messed up a ton of the story lines and made certain things irrelevant and others wasted.

He loves the character, if he can get past his love of the dorky version of him and realize that peter parker becomes more of a confident man in HIGH SCHOOL and less of a dork, but more of a goofball, then he'll be good as gold in my book.

My only other gripe is his unwillingness to recast. Tobey made his money and got his career boost, let somebody into those webs who knows how to develop a character through a story arch , who can tell jokes, and who exercises in preparation for the role past the first movie for christ's sake.

Cheers Spyder 121 and all the rest of us seeming to bring a bit more reason to play on the boards.
I completely understand that that which you love most can also disappoint you most, so we wouldn't have such 'venom' about the subject if it didn't mean so much to us. But that emotion has to be placed into perspective and not just translated as scatter-gun blame.
I want this franchise to continue in some form for as long as possible, for myself, my audience and peers and my children.
Mooting re-invention every time something miffs us a bit seriously throws that possibility into doubt- even for the biggest character.
As long as the folks behind the films aren't taking the swings of our passions too seriously anymore and being overly-influenced (because they must be as aware as us by now about this fickle-nature-of-fan)-
then we can at least be glad that this same fickle nature will have us bigging up the next one soon!

Posted by: The ButnakedAvenger on June 6, 2008 at 01:04:47

My thoughts were incomplete haha...

If they have a finished, finalized script going into this movie, and i mean really have it locked with no story changes taking place, then i'm sure it will be amazing. 3 was half assed and rushed to meet a release date. I'd rather wait the extra 6 months or year to get an amazing movie.

They also need to pull Peter out of his dorkiness. Spitballs.. mirrors? Is anybody else bothered by the fact that a nerd was being picked on in an advanced level physics course in college?? They're all nerds!! Nobody's picking on anybody! Peter is supposed to become the "cool" nerd.

I want to see him dark an depressed now and mourning Harry. The way he did in the early nineties (i think.. i was only 6 or 7 at the time, i know that) with MJ smoking... then please leaving for LA because she can't handle Peter's depression. He should stay in his suit. He should web swing and fight crime as a distraction. And there's a very powerful image of Peter crying in front of an Osborne portrait in their home, and then him going berserk and ripping it and a table apart with his bare hands. I wanna see that in the movie.

i don't get this evil dead remake talk. evil dead 2 was ALREADY A REMAKE!!! lol

also, the main thing that would make ALL spiderman movies better? get kirsten dunst's ugly mug outa there! she drives me insane. it's the one thing i hated in every movie. overacting at its worst.
