Justin Theroux Talks Iron Man 2 Script
Source:UGO
November 22, 2008

UGO caught up with Justin Theroux and asked for an update on the Iron Man 2 script. Here's a clip:

We've kind of got a first draft around. You know what I mean? I just got back from London where I was working with Robert and Kevin Feige. He was out there. We were talking with Robert, who's out there doing Sherlock Holmes, he was giving his input and his notes. We're sort of there. It's just sort of chugging along. The crews, I think, are now starting to see what they need to make, and the places that we might be going and all the rest within the story. That's sort of one of the more exciting times.

He talks more about the recasting of Rhodey and The Avengers movie here.

Directed by Jon Favreau, the sequel hits theaters May 7, 2010.

I am ready for this movie, I LOVE the FIRST movie and think Don, who is a more talented actor will succeed as War Machine. He may not be buff like a lot people are complaining about, but that can change, look at Maguire before Spider Man and Christian Bale between the Machinist and Batman, nuff said

Just a shot in a dark, how come RBJ has avoided doing commentary on what is easily his biggest films to date.

Posted by: eelyajekim on November 22, 2008 at 01:33:04

Don't get me wrong I think he is a great actor, loved him in Iron Man, loved him even more in Tropic Thunder, I just wish I knew what was running through his head in both films.

Thank goodness he didn't say anything like, "I want to grow & expand the previous vision" or "I want to do something different, audiences already saw what was done before." Humility is a rare commodity these days. Mr. Theroux sounds like he's on the right track!

don cheadle is a talented actor but
it was cold to recast war machine like that

Posted by: who? on November 22, 2008 at 01:44:18

once they show the War Machine armor, is it really going to matter who's inside it?

Posted by: Snorkllz on November 22, 2008 at 01:53:56

Sounds good... looking forward to seeing how this movie turns out. It seems that they know what they are doing.

I think the recasting of Rhodes means he will be more important to the story because they were thinking about the character enough to decide to recast him so i think we'll be seeing War Machine. Favreau has said we wont be seeing the Mandarin until the third movie (although that could have changed) and he'll be in the backgroud of this one, he compared him to Sauron in the Lord of the Rings. He also said they'll be getting into Starks alcholism in the sequel so this along with War Machine, i think fans of the comic know where i'm going with this.

At the Iron Man commentary in LA, Downey and Favreau said that the studio never scheduled a time to record commentary. But they did a live commentary, which was fantastic.

I don't mind the recast, as long as the actor puts a great effort to play the part. I didn't much care for Rhodey in the first film because he came off somewhat effeminate. I know that's been said before, but I think a guy who puts on a name like 'war machine' should be the kind of guy who shaves with a piranha and swallows tank shells for breakfast and craps out thunder and smog by afternoon.

But I never read the comics, so what do I know?

Posted by: Ryan on November 22, 2008 at 04:40:49

Wow, that tells us absolutely NOTHING!

Honestly, why is a paragraph of the guy babbling about nothing newsworthy?

Posted by: Keith on November 22, 2008 at 07:27:24

Ryan - cheer the feck up, for crying out loud.

The news item was a damn sight more interesting than your negative miserableness, that's for sure.

can't wait to see this film. but i hope they keep edward norton as the hulk for a sequel and the avengers it would ruin the hulk permanently for me if they chang the hulk a third time after a great actor like ed.so please bring edward norton back as the hulk in a sequel.

Looking forward to IM2, I truely loved Iron Man and RDJ,s preformance. I will miss Terrence but Don is not a downgrade, so I'm ok with the recast.
I'm very interested in the villain and what direction they will go in.

Posted by: Ughhhhhhhh!!!! on November 22, 2008 at 08:24:23

Terrance Howard must have pissed the wrong guy off. It is clear that he was not replaced over money (I'm sure Don Cheadle commands the same if not more money). I like Cheadle, but this has been a unpleasant distraction. I wish they did not feel the need to recast.

Posted by: CeejayNightwing on November 22, 2008 at 08:42:26

The recast is a joke, it's one of those "Any black actor would do" type recasts that they wouldn't dare if the character was white. TH and DC look NOTHING like each other so how the hell can they both be ok for the character the producers ever had in mind? DC is way older than TH and they are clearly different types of African American in terms of looks alone, then there is the size and height. If they wanted a better replacement for the part they should have gone with Chiwetel Ejiofor, at least he looks closer to what the audience saw as James Rhodes than the stark (no pun intended) contrast they'll be forced to adjust to when they see Don Cheadle! This makes about as much sense as replacing RDJ with Leanardo DiCaprio!

Howard is a friggin idiot to screw himself out of such a sweet role.
"Next time..." I loved that part. Shame.

Posted by: Captain Obvious on November 22, 2008 at 09:34:12

CeejayNightwing: "Any black actor will do?" Really? And thanks for your casting choice, I'm sure they'll get right on that obscure and horrible choice...because looks are all that matter in a movie.

Howard wasn't replaced by "any black actor". He was replaced by a "better black actor". One who looks more like his comics counterpart, commands more respect in the acting community, and apparantly doesn't whine like a 9-year-old girl with a skinned knee when they don't get a bigger paycheck.

It's been confirmed on multiple levels (Rotten Tomatoes still has the article) that Howard was the highest paid actor in the last film, which makes no sense. Instead of allowing the star of the film to make more than he did he tried to get a pay increase and they called his bluff. He whined his way out of the role.

I say good for Marvel for not taking his crap. It sends the message that the studio won't buckle under the pressure of whiney actors, which they shouldn't.

**** cheadle he is not a good actor...ugh

Posted by: Keith on November 22, 2008 at 10:59:23

jimmy - what? Are you high or just stupid? Just say no to the drugs, son. They clearly addle your mind.

Posted by: Keith on November 22, 2008 at 11:13:00

eelyajekim - Have to ask - are you on drugs too? What do you mean by those comments? They truly are bizarre.

1. He promoted Iron Man to death. I assume they didn't do a commentary because the DVD extras and makings of were extremely extensive and answered pretty much everything we wanted to know (and more). He also did a million and one interviews both prior to and just after release, so not sure where you're coming from with your pseudo-conspiracy theory thoughts there... His enthusiasm has been plain to see, so I'm sure the lack of commentary has absolutely nothing to do with... whatever you're thinking.

2. Why do you need to know what's 'running through his head' at all? Appreciate the man for his performances (or not) - anything more is creepy stalker-like behaviour, dude.

Seriously, some of you guys are pretty scary. Brrr.

Gwyneth Paltrow isn't confirmed? I thought she was signed for three films.

Posted by: Leo Jussila on November 22, 2008 at 11:54:28

I for one don't think that the movie will be that much affected by the change of Howard.
I mean, Cheadle is a GREAT actor, and Howard didn't even have that big of a role in the first, and his performance wasn't even THAT great.
Surely he will BECOME War Machine, but me for one, and i LOVE the movie, and the comic, didn't really raise a finger when i heard about the changing, since it won't affect the movie that much.

Posted by: Leo Jussila on November 22, 2008 at 11:56:23

and CeejayNightwing.
As someone posted either here or on the imdb forum, if people could accept the change to Gyllenhaal in The Dark Knight, which to me was a bigger role than Howards in Iron Man, people could accept this.

I'm going to be VERY skeptical about IM2. I can't be the only one who is concerned it will not duplicate the phenom, the magic of the first one.
