Anne Thompson on the Hulk "Feud"
June 14, 2008
For the past few months, there's been a lot of talk about actor Edward Norton's issues with Marvel Studios over the final edit of The Incredible Hulk and a lot of speculation about what that might mean for Norton's future with the franchise, especially since he wasn't credited for his part in rewriting the movie, something that's been heavily-publicized since Norton signed on for the movie over a year ago.
With the movie now playing in theaters, Variety's resident industry expert Anne Thompson has posted a comprehensive analysis of the situation with links to some of the previous stories, as well as new information about how Norton was convinced by Marvel Studios to play Bruce Banner, why he may not have received a writing credit on the film and why he has not done very much publicity for the movie.
You can read her new blog post here and post your own comments and thoughts on it below.

He didn't write it. He only collaborated.

I love how Penn's getting major praise for that helicopter jumping scene, when in actuality it was Mark Millar (though more like throwing Banner out of one) who came up with that badass scene. Marvel's really shooting themselves in the foot with what they've done now and totally giving Edward Norton the shaft (and behaving questionably to Favs for Iron Man 2). They've gotta make it right somehow so he can be involved with TIH2 and the Avengers!

Marvel is taking all of the people who are turning there franchise around and making them good movies and screwing them over. They are low-balling Jon faverau out of Iron Man 2. And now they are not giving credit to the man who single handedly revitalized their Hulk franchise.

Marvel has no say over who gets writing credits the Guild (WGA) are the ones who determine that.

ok, after reading the article, i guess its not really what I thought it was. hahaha. third?

Yo, myspace guy: Anne Thompson never said Marvel decided writing credit. She stated that they submitted the conflict to the WGA and had them determine sole credit.
As for the whole debate, I think we can just let it go and stop speculating about it. clearly, the men Marvel found to work their properties have had great respect for the material and for Marvel, and subsequently Marvel has wanted to try and make themselves look good. It's about the branding; Marvel doesn't want to hear 'An Edward Norton film', they want to hear "A Mighty Marvel Movie". So they screw the guys over.
The sad part is that both Jon Favreau and Ed Norton are both too gracious and too good at what they do to vomit any and all feuds to the press. So we keep speculating. Get over it guys, let them handle it and stop griping.

From G4's Attack of the Show interview with the Director of TIH. He talks about and definitively ends any debate about the drama there is or was about Norton's being cut from the writing credits of the movie.

This movie had everything I wanted in it! All the cameos, the set up for the sequel, the tv series Hulk theme, great acting, comedy and lots of action. The Tony Stark/Avenger set up, awesome. Can you imagine Batman back in 1986, if Christopher Reeve flew by or had some small part. This is why DC failed. Comics are all about crossovers. Thanks to everyone involved in the HULK!! Not to mention that all throughout Ang Lee's Hulk, the words "Hulk smash" were never uttered!!!

They should have given Ed Norton the credit for help writing the story. This movie is so AWESOME!!! :) They all deserve the credit for making a WAY BETTER HULK MOVIE THE Ang Lee's crapy hulk. I love this new HULK MOVIE They did such a way better job then Ang Lee. HULK RULES!!! :) HULK SMASH!!! :)

I'd love to see Norton's full take on the Hulk. Hopefully it will be included in a DVD version.
Supposedly, (or in a hidden way) Banner tried to commit suicide not just try to test the gamma device on himself. Hopefully this gets clarified later because that would make for an INCREDIBLY (no pun intended) flawed yet compelling characterization of the Hulk we've never really seen.
Can't wait to see this one again!

Andrewsh86: Good interview over at G4! Highly recommend to all who would run around speculating.

haha wow the WGA has nothing better to do than strike ("we want some of that internet money" -South Park) and to act as a court when a debate arises over whether talking points or "guy falls out of a helicopter" are more crucial.
I at least think it's cool that a lot of the critics are aware of the situation though, a lot of reviews I've read have all said "and Norton as Bruce Banner and an uncredited screenwriter"
WGA, i'd write more praise of you guys, but i probably wouldn't get writing credit for it

Its not that im disagreeing with Anne Thompson about this Issue, But isnt that whats the media always do?? exaggerating things that doesn't need to be exaggerate?
In recent Interviews i've watch, Norton said there was No more problem with Marvel or director louis leterrier, he said disagreements between actor and directors and etc. are normal .
Im just worried all this stuff will unnecessary
exploded and it will cause the movie(hulk) or the quality of the movie in the future.

When this story first surfaced, I made a mental note to just let it be and not talk about it or make a bigger deal out of it, and I'm continuing to hope it will or has been resolved for the most part. I just want to enjoy the final product of what Marvel and Ed have created. I'm pretty sure if and when Hulk makes a good amount of money for both, all wounds will heal and then its back to the drawing board. Don't you just love the power of money!

Letterier said that there would not be another cut of the movie on DVD, but that he wanted to include all of the deleted footage.
So it looks like it's gonna be down to the fans to edit all the deleted scenes into the film, so we can see the extended cut.

Not promoting it?
Norton was on Kimmel...and was great, I might add!
'nuff said!

what the ****

Norton did a good job as Bruce Banner....
I would also love to see what Norton had in mind with HULK and I'm very pleased with this new version and Ang Lee's version.I was really hoping to see a glimpse of The Leader after the end credits, but I guess I'll just have to wait for the sequel,if they make one.Yeah,
hearing Hulk say HULK SMASH was great. The movie
was actually a combinatiof of the TV show and the animted series.Cuz Lou Ferrigno was the voice of Hulk in the cartoon series as well as in the movie. And while watching the movie, with
the scenes with Hulk and the sonic blasters and
everything else,it reminded me a lot of the cartoon series...but I'm very pleased with what they did and how they had a bunch of references to the TV show....like with Culver
University and the name McGee being said by the asian news reporter, talking about the student who caught the Hulk action on his phone, and he even got to name the Hulk as well.
And seeing Tony Stark was great too...I can't wait to see what they will do with The Avengers. They also referenced SHIELD a bunch of times to.Marvel Studios is getting better and better.

@Sanjuro
yeah, i hope they have a feature in the DVD where it plays the deleted scenes where they would fit in with the movie. i think they did that with the first x-men movie dvd.

You know if this single handly kills the Hulk franshise agaian, and Norton Will not come back due to the unjust credit. The Marvel deserves the backlash from the fans!

The fact that the author of the article calls LL's movie Transponder makes me wonder if she actually did her research.

I certaintly hope this blows over. Norton's gottent the shaft so many times he should be used to it. The Jimmy Kimmel thing was funny. I think by now they have settled their differences. I thought it was really fantastic that those twgreat scenes were from Penn's 16 year old script/screenplay. Being that I'm in the same position.
