Nicolas Cage on Turning Down The Green Hornet
Source:The Canadian Press
September 16, 2009

On Monday, it was announced that Inglourious Basterds actor Christoph Waltz had been cast as the villain "Chudnofsky" in The Green Hornet. Nicolas Cage was in talks for the role earlier and talked to The Canadian Press about his reasons for not coming on board:

Cage says he "wasn't interested in just being just a straight-up bad guy who was killing people willy-nilly."

"'The Green Hornet' was something that I wanted to do, I think Michel Gondry is very talented and I had hoped it would work but I think Seth Rogen and Michel had a different take on the character," said Cage, who starred in 2007's supernatural comic book film, "Ghost Rider."

"I had to have some humanity and to try to give it something where you could understand why the character was the way he was but I don't think there was enough time to develop it."

We assume Christoph Waltz will have a different take on the character. We'll find out on December 17, 2010, if that date sticks.

Oh well. Guess we'll just have to wait and see the finished product.

You know, I haven't reall been interested in this project ever since Seth Rogen was part of it. I am a huge fan of the original series, and if it follows that kind of style and look then maybe I can accept it. But when I heard Nick Cage wasn't going to be in the movie, I pretty much gave up all hope....go back to Freaks and Geeks Seth....it was the only project you were part of that wasn't horrible

sounds like their doing this movie right (WINK ****ING WINK)

Posted by: Vork on September 16, 2009 at 02:09:51

Wow, proof of the crap-fest to come. A villain with no meat to his character. Sounds great. ~rolls eyes~

Posted by: Not Seth Rogen on September 16, 2009 at 02:20:26

Well Joker was a villain with almost nothing behind him. He just "wanted to see the world burn". Definitely not saying this is the next Dark Knight however. I mean, Nick Cage turned you down. That's like the **** King deeming you too ****ty for his tastes. :(

Yeah, because Ghost Rider was a brilliant delve into character development. e_e

what a waste! nick cage turned you down, its gonna suck cause hes not that great. Con air is the only movie where he wasnt himself by changing his voice.

hey man dont knock conair it was a pretty good movie

Considering the films Nicholas Cage has made recently (Ghost Rider, Next, Knowing, The Wicker Man, National Treasure 1 & 2) I'd question whether his judgement is worth **** anyway. Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds blew any Cage performance in the last decade out of the water so I'm glad he turned it down.

...Are you people serious? You give up all hope because Cage turned it down? You put all this stake in his decisions? This is the guy who starred in Ghost Rider, and Bangkok Dangerous. He isn't an action star, and should never pretend to be one. No doubt about it, he's a good actor, but as a killer (whom I am going to assume was going to have a sparring match with the Green Hornet, and or Kato... Not that I expect too much from Rogen or anything but, ah... next), I think Christophe is amazing, and his works in German cinema are completely compelling. Though with all things considered. I had actually assumed this movie was more of a "fake" kind of thing, or at best an experiment. I'm not sure in what world Seth Rogen can kick ass in, but he'll have a new fan if this movie isn't complete ****.

No, this movie will definitely suck. God, I at least hope that ugly idiot gets rid of those 90210-style sideburns

Posted by: Triumph on September 16, 2009 at 08:07:27

Aside from me pooping on this movie...I'm so tired of all these bad guys having to have a "human" backstory. I'm sick of all these lame "i really am the bad guy but I don't want to be the bad guy, I Just have to be the bad guy because..." friggin' backstorys. That is why the Joker was such a fantastic bad guy. He just did what he did. Plain and simple.

Just kill some people and enjoy it heel!

@DAN
Before you say Nick Cage isn't an action star, go watch FACE-OFF. Yeah he picked up some crappy scripts and did what he could with them, but Face-off is one of the best action movies made, b/c of Nick Cage!

Great news, now all we need is someone else cast as Johnny Blaze!

Posted by: Steve the Dude on September 16, 2009 at 08:47:55

I KNEW that Nicolas Cage turned down this crapfest for creative reasons! Look you dudes may prefer Christoph Waltz over Nicolas Cage. I don't get that. Whatever.

Does NOT change the fact that Seth Rogen is TOTALLY MISCAST as the Green Hornet and this crap fest is nothing more than his vanity project.

December 17th what will we be seeing?

TRON LEGACY !!!

So I guess its safe to say they don't want an bad Elvis impersonator as the villain in the Green Hornet movie...YAY!

Posted by: JmsSpideyfan on September 16, 2009 at 09:18:14

im not against the green hornet as a concept, i just think seth rogen is overused in hollywood and im kind of fed up with him at this point. the whole apatow type comedy stuff has worn out its welcome in my book.

Christoph Waltz should turn this role down and play The RED SKULL in the Captain America Movie, which he is perfect for.

Posted by: Anton Ego on September 16, 2009 at 09:19:37

What a shame, 'cause, y'know, this movie is SO going to suffer without him...!

(*snicker*)

Posted by: Spocks on September 16, 2009 at 09:34:08

Cage is a pretty good actor when he sticks to what he does best... Comic book characters are definately not his thing. Wise decision, cage... now people might not expect Hornet to be another terrible Ghost Rider ****farm.

Posted by: Winston Wolf on September 16, 2009 at 09:54:08

Good.....Cage has sucked for a long time now. Murdered Ghost Rider and now he's talking about doing it again...in space or some ****. The less he's in, the better.

Posted by: Gigli on September 16, 2009 at 09:57:27

Wow, say what you want about Nick Cage and Stephan Chow, but (over time) they have learned how to get involved with good projects and how to avoid crappy ones (probably due to the number of crap projects they were involved with early on in their careers). This does not spell good things for the GH...

Posted by: the reflector on September 16, 2009 at 10:15:51

This is the best thing for this movie. Nicholas Cage is awful. I can't think of the last time he did anything remotely good. Probably Raising Arizona......

Posted by: Landa on September 16, 2009 at 10:29:29

C'mon guys. Cage turned it down over money and that's the only reason!

Posted by: BW on September 16, 2009 at 10:41:54

I agree with Nicolas Cage in some movies the character should have a reason.
