New Moon Fails to Beat Dark Knight's Opening Weekend
Source:ComingSoon.net
November 22, 2009

Despite setting new records for a midnight opening with $26.27 million at 3,514 theaters and single day opening with $72.7 million from 4,024 theaters, Summit Entertainment's The Twilight Saga: New Moon ended up with $140.7 million domestically for the three-day weekend.

That means it's the third-biggest opening domestically, trailing the opening weekend record of The Dark Knight's $158 million and also is behind Spider-Man 3's $151.1 million.

Having said that, "New Moon" did open worldwide to $258.8 million, which, in terms of superhero movies, was only beat by Spider-Man 3's $381.7 million. The top worldwide opening of $394 million was set by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince last July. Spider-Man 3 ranks second on that list and "New Moon" came in at #7.

Good! Im not a whiney Batman fan, but I saw the 2 twilight movies and thought they were poorly done. I'm glad it didn't break the record because TDK is a well crafted movie and should remain ontop.. Even though Spiderman3 was bad it still was 300x better than New Moon.

Twilight sucks.

Thank you TDK, Nolan & Co.!!!!

yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
tdk will not be touched!!

Cool to know that Spidey is well loved around the world. I don't think Spider-man 3 was better than New Moon. It was okay, so was New Moon, but neither were anything close to amazing. At least New Moon pleased its audience. Hopefully Sam will redeem the franchise with the next film (even though SM3 wasn't completely horrible).

hahahahahaha, so now the pretty faces and annoying marketing beats the creativity, I dont care the box office records, TDK will be always on the top, over Titanic and of course this piece of $h!+ called new moon

Eat it Twilight. The Dark Knight is a far superior movie. I mean seriously vampires that sparkle. Please, where are the lost boys when you need them.

Suck it Twlight... Serious.

Even though I thought TDK was way over rated and didn't deserve the money it got it was still better than this vampire soap opera crap.

my question is why the hell are they even mentioning this movie on a superhero/comic website. it is neither. it is a horrible tween girly movie and it makes me want to punch babies. good day.

F'IN SWEET! AHAHAHAH THANK GOD ! THIS MOVIE BLEW DOG!I betit falls off 70% next week! who wants to bet? Hmmm.lol.

TDK was amazing and deserves its spot. i read the twilight books and they were really good but these movies butcher the books so bad,the only reason why they are so popular is because these teeny boppers think the lead guys are hot thats it. movies like TDK are one in a million and it will stay ontop for a long time,or at least till the third batman movie comes out

Batman FTW

Posted by: BPark on November 22, 2009 at 21:41:51

I am surprised. Happy to hear this though. TDK deserves to stay on top. One of the better movies of our generation.

And to think just a couple of days ago all you TDK lovers were crying in your cereal that New Moon had beat TDK opening day box office. TDK was NOT that great and something will take its place soon enough.

Posted by: Sam on November 22, 2009 at 22:10:33

THERE IS STILL HOPE FOR THIS WORLD!

Posted by: Rachel on November 22, 2009 at 22:22:07

New Moon was good but it doesn't beat HPHBP or TDK but still, this is a stupid thing to get angry over. It's a movie. A good movie at that. So just deal with it.

As much as I hated TDK and thought the movie was way overhyped. I am glad that New Moon did not touch it. New Moon is and Twilight are just horrid movies. I do not get the fanbase, and I will be honest, I think the whole fandango record breaking and what not is just fabricated hype. Iron Man 2 will reign supreme Next may. That is fo sho.

I hated twilight(like most comic geeks) but was dragged to New Moon by my GF. Movie mostly sucked, but the action was suprisingly awesome. being in a theater full of crazed 12-35 gilrs i realized something, hilarious. I assure everyone that if all the geeky haters that comment negatively about this flick would have actually gone to see the movie this weekend they would have achieved something never could have other wise.

gotten some estrogen induce loose booty.
you fools would have been swiming in poon tang.

i'm glad this movie is doing so well.that mean we are moving away from the boring male dominated cinema culture.

Ps: i love all u haters, u make crack me up wit ur ignorant selves

Congrats to all the teenage girls of the world, but your victory shall be short lived. Behold the fury of "Ninja Assasin" coming out this week!!!!! Nah, just kidding.

i didn't know Christmas came early this year!

THANK GOD New Moon failed to beat the Dark Knight for opening weekend gross.

Honestly Hollywood. Did you want New Moon holding that record?? A movie I have yet to see that said it was even "ok" versus a movie that was heavily praised and won some meaningful awards?

I'm not gonna whine about Twilight beating Batman and all I'm gonna say on that subject is good job for making some money in this economy.

But the Twilight series is a gut wrenching waste that makes me smack myself in the head whenever someone mentions it. Which is surprisingly everywhere.
